Wondering why you didn’t get your annual birthday-card cash from grandma this year?
Eleven former FedEx Express employees and two former contractors were indicted on federal charges Monday for stealing mail they believed contained cash.
The defendants looked for mail like gift and greeting cards as they likely contained cash, according to a statement from Michael Dunavant, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee. The employees would then search through the mail, remove some of the contents, and smuggle items off the premises.

The defendants have been indicted on obstruction of correspondence, or theft and receipt of stolen mail matter. They face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

• Jerome Timothy Pope, 26, of Memphis
• Cortez B. Spencer, 28, of Memphis
“Theft of mail by employees or outside contractors strikes at the very heart of the public’s confidence in the sanctity and security of the U.S. Mail,” said David M. McGinnis, Inspector in Charge, Charlotte Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Agency.
FedEx Express security personnel aided in the investigation.
