Since the emergence of hip-hop decades ago, males have dominated the genre, with the exception of a few female spitters here and there.
In light of that, several female lyricists representing Memphis have banded together to show off their skills on the mic. Known as Memphis Queens Hustle & Flow, the 10-women collective banded together earlier this year with hopes of bringing more exposure to, and unity between, ladies in the city that are talented musically.
The Queens recently dropped a visual to their song “Unity,” which was primarily shot on the historical Memphis-Arkansas bridge. The video is the third installment of their “Cypher Series.” Former American Idol contestant Keia Johnson soulfully sings on the song’s hook; several of the ladies deliver stellar verses, spitting lines about female empowerment and the importance of unity when seeking to prosper as a city. The beat is pretty ill, too. Check it out below.
