Field Grows: What Does Chumney Say About Council Race?

Former council member and mayoral candidate Carol Chumney announced at a press conference at her East Memphis law office Wednesday that she would not be a candidate for the District 9, Position 1 council seat being vacated by council chairman Scott McCormick.

Chumney noted the presence in the race of “several good candidates” and reaffirmed her interest in serving the city as mayor but said, “After prayerful consideration, I have decided not to run for the vacant City Council seat.”

Chumney declined to endorse another candidate “at this time,” saying that she would wait to see how the field of candidates develops. Filing deadline is Thursday noon.

Among the candidates who have filed or considering filing are Kemp Conrad, Brian Stephens, Lester Lit, Regina Newman, Mary Wilder, and Antonio “2-Shay” Parkinson. Others are expected to throw their hats in the ring before the deadline.
