Weirdo Radio
Memphis Sports Live, a weekly Tuesday-evening show on Sports56, seems to be the place for bizarro political candidates to say incomprehensible things. Earlier this year, Memphis Sports Live bragged about having “the first major interview” with Prince Mongo since the 2009 election. Last week, overexposed Basil Marceaux told Memphis Sports Live he’d be running for governor this fall. When asked what one law he would change, Marceaux said, “I would kick out democracy and turn Tennessee [into] a Republic.” The former Republican candidate, who has said he would charge a $10 fine for anyone caught without a gun, also admitted that he does not personally carry a gun. “I don’t need a gun,” Marceaux said, reminding listeners that he had been a Marine. “I use knives and a needle.”

Fox 13 reporter Les Smith recently asked University of Memphis professor Larry Moore what he thought about a leaked DEA memo saying that the agency was looking to hire “Ebonics” translators to “interpret” wire-tapped conversations among drug dealers.
“For the DEA to say to speak ‘Ebonics,’ it would be like somebody in 1910 saying we’re looking for somebody to speak minstrel,” Moore concluded. Sho’ ’nuff.
Serve & Protect
Memphis police officer Clayton John Hickey was arrested Sunday and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor after he was caught behind an elementary school with a 17-year-old girl and open containers of alcohol. Those who rush to condemn Hickey should remember that it’s only been 13 years since the 32-year-old officer was a teenager himself.
