There are plenty of art openings and sales. They are at: The Art Museum of the University of Memphis for “Brushes,” work by U of M alumnus Robert Koehler; Jay Etkin Gallery for works by Tim Rollins and K.O.S. (Kids of Survival); DCI Gallery, where tonight’s sale features “From Memphis to Nashville: Four Tennessee Artists,”the new Painted Planet Artspace on Cooper, where tonight’s show and sale features “The Lines of a Woman,” work by Amy Hutcheson, with proceeds benefiting the fight against breast cancer; Greater Memphis Arts Council for “Eight Second Universe: Painting with Light,” work by Fred Asbury; David Mah Studio for work by Matthew Hasty; and if you feel like a short road trip to a pretty charming little town, there’s an opening tonight in Somerville, hosted by Jan Jaeger at the Court Square Gallery on the town square, for “A Summer Art Fling,” featuring work by five Fayette County artists. At Newby’s, there are two screenings of Widespread Panic’s 90-minute film The Earth Will Swallow You, followed by live music by Bathtub Gin. If you feel like going for a jog tonight and helping out a worthy cause at the same time, The Gibson Guitar 5K, starting at 7 p.m., benefits the St. Patrick Center at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, one of the finest outreach centers in town. Today kicks off this weekend’s 9th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival at Douglass Park. This evening’s Sudsfest bash in Overton Square, a fund-raiser for the Memphis Arts Festival, features more than 100 beers, unlimited beer-sampling, a souvenir sampling glass, and food from Overton Square restaurants and other local eateries. Down in Tunica, The Temptations are at the Grand Casino, while Styx plays at the Horseshoe. And here in town, as always, The Chris Scott Band at the Poplar Lounge.
