Gonerfest Thursday: Ty Segall, Mikal Cronin, Sex Cult

The eighth Gonerfest kicks off tonight. The event — an annual garage/punk concert series organized by Goner Records — runs through Sunday at a variety of Midtown venues, with the Hi-Tone Cafe as homebase.

Festivities open early this evening at the Goner Records shop, where locals the Limes (5:30 p.m.) and Jack Oblivian (6:30) will play in the store.

The lineup at the Hi-Tone tonight has a decidedly San Francisco bent, with Goner-connected rocker Ty Segall (1 a.m.) headlining and Segall’s frequent collaborator Mikal Cronin (10:30 p.m.) — who has a Goner single on the way — also on the bill. Stephen Deusner talked to Segall and Cronin for a feature story in this week’s Flyer.

Here’s Segall playing the title track from his most recent album, Goodbye Bread:

Also on the bill is a newish local band, Sex Cult (9 p.m.), that also as a Goner single forthcoming. Here’s some raw video of Sex Cult playing at the Lamplighter earlier this year:
