Holiday Theater Roundup for Humbugs: Part Two

Tired of the same old Christmas shows? Here are some options.

For starters, how about a progressive Christmas dance concert benefiting Project: Motion and the Woodruff-Fontaine House? Rebecca Cochran and Louisa Koeppel have assembled an evening of site-specific dance that includes a modern twists on The Nutcracker and unique dances inspired by rooms in the sprawling victorian home. Choreographers include Wayne M. Smith, Erin Walter, Louisa Koeppel and Bethany Wells.

Here’s a clip from Pro: Mo‘s last “House Happening.”

Holiday Theater Roundup for Humbugs: Part Two

If that’s not enough spin on the holidays, you may want to visit TheatreSouth at First Congregational Church to take in a performance of a show called Holiday Spin starring Sister Myotis, the unchallenged queen of Memphis evangelistainment.

Holiday Theater Roundup for Humbugs: Part Two (2)

Our good Sister is determined to win the war on Christmas. The weapon of choice is a game show (of sorts) called Holiday Spin.

The partially scripted, partially improved format, originally developed by Scott Ferguson, will randomly change from night to night, determined by a spinning wheel of fortune and audience whim. So, what will it be then? Christmas karaoke, a good story, or a ridiculous contest? It’s up to you. And fate. And a cast that includes Todd Berry, Ashley Bugg Brown, Jon Castro, Kell Christie, David Couter, Sandy Kozik, Joshua Payne, and Steve Swift.

Also opening next week: Bluff City Tri-Arts Theatre Company is opening First Site, a new work by local playwright Ruby O’Gray, about a holiday gift with unexpected results. To find out what happens when Bible School students enter their teacher’s name on a dating website you’ll just have to drop by TheatreWorks.  O’Gray describes her play as “traditional” with a refreshingly atypical holiday message: Young folk should stay out of grown folk’s business!
