Lorenzen Wright
A man has been indicted on a first-degree charge for the 2010 murder of basketball player Lorenzen Wright.
Wright was shot in 2010 and his body was later discovered in an abandoned field near Hacks Cross and Winchester. He had been shot multiple times. According to the indictment, Wright was killed sometime between July 17 and July 20 that year. He was 34.
Wright was last seen alive on July 18, 2010, when he left the home of his ex-wife. Early the next morning, the Germantown Police Department received a 911 call from Wright’s cell phone, but the call was interrupted by gunfire.
Wright’s became a cold case until a new flurry of activity this year. In early November, law enforcement officials announced they found the murder weapon in a Mississippi lake. Later that month, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam reauthorized a $10,000 reward for any information in the case, done at the behest of Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich.
On Tuesday, Weirich announced a grand jury had returned an indictment against Billy R. Turner, 46, of Collierville, after he was arrested earlier that day. Turner’s bond was set at $1 million. No court date has yet been scheduled for him.
Weirch would not say if Wright and Turner knew one another. In fact, there was very little she would say or could say about the case at all.
“We know the community wants to know as much as they can about this case,” Weirich said. “As we are legally and ethically avilable to do so, we will share (more details).”
