The Downtown Memphis Commission (DMC) announced the expansion of its initiative that allows local vendors to open a pop-up shop rent-free for weeks at a time on Main Street.
DMC officials say because the original two shops at 7 and 9 North Main, which have been occupied by several different tenants since May, have proved to be successful, for the next five months the Open on Main initiative will extend to two additional locations, 86 and 88 North Main.
Eight primary tenants, including Bluff City Soap, Monster Market, and Mushroom Vintage have been selected to occupy the two new spaces for about a month each until November.
The Open on Main initiative was created in March and according to the DMC website, it is meant to increase activity on Main and encourage more permanent occupation of these spaces and others like them on Main and throughout Downtown.
“The Open on Main pop-up initiative is a key component of our renewed focus on the Main Street Mall and the Downtown core,” Brett Roler, vice president of planning and development at the DMC said. “We see pop-up activation as a creative way to increase retail options Downtown while simultaneously improving the appearance of vacant or blighted buildings.”
