The private papers of E.H. Crump, Memphis’ most towering historical figure, were formally made available to Memphians at the opening of the E.H. Crump Collection Saturday at the Memphis-Shelby County Public Library & Information Center.
Former Memphian Kenneth Jackson, prolific author and the head of Columbia University’s American History program, was the principal speaker at Saturday’s ceremonies. Here Dr. Jackson is flanked by Betty Crump McGeorge and Demetria Crump McLaughlin, members of the family.
Others taking part in events Saturday were Crump family members Pallas Pidgeon, Stephen McLaughlin Jr., Robert Smithwick, and Charles M. Crump; Dr. Randolph Meade Walker, senior pastor, Castalia Baptist Church and former professor, LeMoyne-Owen College; Dr. Charles Crawford, University of Memphis; Dr. Marius Carrier, Christian Brothers University; and Dr. Tim Huebner, Rhodes College.
Officiating for the library were Dr. Jim Johnson, senior manager, history department; Wayne Dowdy,librarian/archivist; and Judith A. Drescher, director of libraries.
