Who is Van Jones? If you didn’t know beforehand, you’ll get to know sometime soon. The West Tennessee native and progressive-media maven was the final speaker at the just-concluded National Conference on Media Reform here in Memphis. Jones not only was able to follow Jane Fonda (no slouch herself), but he perfectly captured the tenor of things.
On the eve of the annual commemoration of Dr. King’s life and death in Memphis, Jones reminded his overflow audience at the Convention Center that Dr. King did not become famous with a speech entitled, “I Have a Complaint.”
And, summarizing the events of the weekend conference, which saw the goals of free expression and network neutrality (and democratic “revolution,” for that matter) espoused by big names and small, Jones observed, “When 3,000 people come to Memphis for this, something is about to happen.”
