One month after 17 students were gunned down and killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., students here participated in National Walkout Day to protest gun violence and urge Congress to take legislative action on gun control.
At 10 a.m., students at the University of Memphis and Rhodes College joined others across the country, staying out of class for 17 minutes to honor the 17 Parkland victims last month.

@RhodesCollege students walk out in commemoration of our family who lost their lives in Florida. I’m proud of them. These are the young people I know. This is how I know young people. Young people all day everyday. #neveragainwalkout pic.twitter.com/8xGnGpSCMF

You cannot keep a blind eye to the rampant gun violence against our students, concert goers, church parishioners, inner city youth and other innocents. #NationalWalkoutDay #GunReformNow

While some disagreed with the students’ actions.
The kids that are walking out of school should be suspended. What happens when you walk out of work, you get fired. That's the real world
