NEAL POSTMAN, R.I.P.

Neil Postman, author of the seminal book Amusing Ourselves to Death, which posited the theory that, thanks to television, it s impossible to distinguish between news and entertainment, died last Tuesday: the day body-builder and action-film star Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected governor of California. And on or around the same day, Memphis congressman Harold Ford Jr. began shooting an episode of HBO s K-Street, a fictional series about a group of D.C. lobbyists. Junior, who plays himself, addresses issues surrounding the very real, potentially criminal leak to newspaper columnist Bob Novack that the wife of former ambassador Joe Wilson was a CIA operative. Poor Dr. Postman. Some people can only take so much irony.
