New, neon archways will stretch across Beale Street in April.
Erecting archways across the street has been a topic of discussion with the Beale Street merchants and city officials since 2015, according to a spokesman with the Downtown Memphis Commission (DMC).
Requests for proposals were issued last year and the final design was picked by a selection committee earlier this year. That committee was comprised of Beale merchants, Beale management, and members of Mayor Jim Strickland’s adminstration.
“Beale Street is a national treasure,” DMC president Jennifer Oswalt said in a statement. “The addition of these markers will help define the neighborhood and will further brand Memphis as the proud home of Beale Street.”
The blue neon signs will read, simply, “Memphis, Tennessee” and “Beale Street.” They will be 18 feet tall and stretch 45 feet across.
