Every week, in honor of its 25th anniversary, USA Today runs a top-25 list. This week, the national newspaper looks at the “Top 25 Changes in the way we travel.”

Sure, online booking came in at number one (does anyone use a travel agent anymore) but Memphis-hubbed Northwest also made the list.

Northwest came in at number 5 for, in 1988, being the first major U.S. carrier to ban smoking on its North American flights.

But that’s not all. The airlines also came in at number 13 for its in-flight entertainment. According to USA Today, “When Northwest Airlines tested the first in-seat video system in 1988, it launched an arms race in seat-back entertainment that continues with the rollout of video-on-demand and live TV.”
