On Tuesday, members of the City Council’s public safety committee discussed recruiting additional Memphis Police Department officers. In addition to offering signing bonuses and a
better pension plan, the council is considering relaxing the residency
requirement for officers.

In 2004, the council said that all municipal employees must live inside
the city of Memphis. Last spring, in an effort to increase the number of
law enforcement personnel, the council amended that to allow police
officers to live in Shelby County. The council is now talking about
allowing officers to live outside Shelby County.
