A prison escape was thwarted Tuesday at the West Tennessee State Penitentiary in Henning, Tenn., about 50 miles northeast of Memphis.

Inmate Arturo Perez attempted an escape, though details of the event were withheld as the investigation continues.

“It must be stressed that Perez did not escape from the secure facility,” according to a news release from the Tennessee Department of Corrections. “This means no fences were breached during this attempt and he never left the secure area of the prison.”

The prison was placed on lockdown but normal operations have resumed, the statement said, and there was not a threat to the community.

Perez is serving an eight-year sentence from Davidson County for attempted aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary. He’s also serving a two-year sentence from Sumner County for reckless endangerment.
