Braving bad weather in Memphis that has been the subject of national publicity (and the bane of thousands who still lack utilities), a group of about a dozen protesters rallied outside 201 Poplar on Friday to protest the six-year prison sentence given in Criminal Court this week to Pamela Moses, who had earlier been convicted of voting fraud.
Moses has continued to proclaim her innocence. In attempting to vote, she had presented a certificate from the Department of Corrections attesting that her rights had been restored after serving out a probation for a felony conviction. The document was genuine, but the probation, as it turned out, had not been completed, and controversy lingers not only regarding Moses’ role in clouding the issue but the severity of her sentence.
Friday’s protest was organized by the group People for Fairness and Justice. Among those participating were Jeffrey Lichtenstein, Josh Spickler, Cardell Orrin, Tekeila Rucker, Paula Burress, and Steve Mulroy, who is running for District Attorney General.
