September is designated as National Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness Month. At 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 18th, the Sickle Cell 5K Run-Walk will start at Robert R. Church Park on Beale Street. This year’s walk is accompanied by the announcement that the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America has selected Memphis as the site for the Sickle Cell 2011 National Conference, held in a different city each year.
Sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., the walk reflects the fraternity’s efforts to build the event to a national level. For more information, contact the Sickle Cell Foundation of Tennessee.
