The Memphis Symphony Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony and two works by Mozart on Saturday, March 15th, at the Cannon Center and Sunday the 16th at GPAC. MSO will put its woodwinds to great effect for the latest in its First Tennessee Masterworks Series. The overture to Mozart’s Magic Flute warms things up, followed by his Oboe Concerto. [page]Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony is a masterpiece of wind and brass. From its stark, powerful opening through the dynamic ups and downs of the opening movement, you’ll hear an orchestra in full effect. The composer’s Russian vernacular is mysterious and enthralling. The middle portions of the first movement are mesmerizing and have a human lilt in time and dynamics that is missed in contemporary music. Hear this in the room.
