The Comedians Following Tool On Tour at 1884 Lounge

Last year, after a 13-year hiatus, rock band Tool released a new album, Fear Inoculum, and now they’re bringing the new tunes to the road with a U.S. tour. Three funnymen, Nick Youssef, Rory Scovel, and Freddy Scott, are big fans, so they’ve decided to follow the band while making a comedy tour out of it.

“[The idea] came up at a dinner in Los Angeles, when we all decided to go watch the [Tool] show at Staples Center,” says Youssef. “And almost in passing, I think as just this joke, I was like, ‘Yeah, if they do more dates in 2020, we should start a little tour and go follow them around.'”

Two weeks later, Tool released tour dates for January, and Youssef and the others decided to go for it.

“Everyone who knows us knows we love Tool,” he says. “And this is one of those moments where the stars sort of aligned in the sense that they haven’t had a new album out in a while. We thought we might not have this opportunity for a while, so we jumped on it.”

The three have since followed the band to places like San Diego and Austin, where they had the opportunity to meet Adam Jones, Tool’s guitarist.

“He came to the show in Austin and watched all of us and had a great time,” Youssef says. “He said a lot of very nice things, and we were all beyond thrilled. We all felt like teenagers again. … They have been so supportive. They put out a tweet and an Instagram [post] telling people about our tour, and we were absolutely floored by that because they don’t tweet much about other comedy or music acts.”

Man Man and Rebecca Black in Upcoming 1884 Lounge Show

Experimental pop band Man Man hits Memphis this week with supporting act Rebecca Black — remember her 2011 hit “Friday”? Although the concert takes place on Wednesday, not Friday, lead man Honus Honus (Ryan Kattner) promises to deliver a fun show that may or may not involve “a jar of frogs, Billy Joel covers, and, if the air is right, maybe throwing a handful of spoons at a wall.”

All jokes aside, the band will perform an array of songs from past albums spanning from Man Man EP (2004) to Life Fantastic (2011) to On Oni Pond (2013) backed by woodwinds, horns, guitars, keyboards, drums, and “men singing like women and children.”

Man Man

After a brief tour together in March, Rebecca Black is back on tour with the band throughout July. “I wanted to bring someone who is inspiring to be around,” says Kattner. “I went and saw a friend perform in L.A., and she played afterward. I was familiar with the work she did when she was 13 years old, but I was really taken aback by how great she sounded at the show. She’s blossomed into a great songwriter, and she does a great performance and has great stage presence. I also thought it would be an interesting juxtaposition because I hate going to shows where the opening band sounds exactly like the main band. Our fans have been really respectful of her.”

Man Man, Rebecca Black perform at 1884 Lounge, Wednesday, July 10th, 8 p.m., $15-$17.

Sarah Simmons and Star & Micey Throw Benefit for Homeless Memphians

Sarah Simmons was born in Birmingham, Alabama, but she says she owes a big debt to the Bluff City. She got her music education at the Visible Music College, jumpstarting her career that led her to a national television on the 2013 season of NBC’s The Voice. Now that she’s off the road after a 7 month world tour, she has returned to Memphis with her guitarist, who also happens to be her fianceé. They have something special prepared for the Memphis audience.

“We want to give back to Memphis in anyway that we can so we decided to have a benefit at Minglewood 1884 to raise money for a shelter,” she says. “This is the first year but we want to do it one a year every year! We are calling it Rock for Shelter.”

Joining Simmons and the band for the show Saturday night at Minglewood Hall’s 1884 Lounge will be Memphis favorite sons Star & Micey.

Here’s a taste of Simmons’ work, with her latest music video “Staring at the Sun”:

Sound Advice: Glenn Tilbrook at 1884 Lounge

tillbrook.jpg

Tomorrow night (Thursday, September 19) British singer-songwriter Glenn Tilbrook makes a rare Memphis-area appearance at the 1884 Lounge at Minglewood Hall.

Tilbrook is undoubtedly best known for his work fronting the alternative/power-pop outfit Squeeze, who scored several big hits in the 80s, including “Take Me I’m Yours,” “Up The Junction,” and “Tempted.” But throughout his long career, Tilbrook has made several fine recordings outside of the Squeeze moniker, both as a solo artist and part of the duo Difford & Tilbrook.

Here’s Tilbrook with his new band performing another of Squeeze’s more well-known songs, “Goodbye Girl,” just two weeks ago in Philadelphia:

Also on the bill is Joe Michelini of the band River City Extension. Here’s a clip from last year of Michelini and Tilbrook performing a River City Extension song together:
