The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, December 2-8

While this calendar only covers live musical events broadcast online, that does allow for some overlap with shows that are not your typical band. B-Side Memphis boasts the ever-creative Velvetina Taylor’s Snow Moon Revue; and of course Hernando’s Hide-a-way features Drag Queen Bingo, with the one and only Imagene Azengraber. Meanwhile, Devil Train is such a thing unto itself; it’s not unlike a fireworks display. Just some things to keep in mind as you plan your weekly entertainment schedule! And when you do land on a virtual show, please tip early and often.

Naughty Nightmares Burlesque this Weekend

Memphis Burlesque Productions, formerly Sock It To Me Productions, will be hosting its annual sexy Halloween show this Saturday at Club Spectrum.

At Naughty Nightmares! A Haunted House of Burlesque, Lady Doo Moi and friends will provide a one-of-a-kind experience.

As guests arrive, they’ll see a special surprise: a “resurrection” of a piece of Club Spectrum’s predecessor, Club 616. After that, guests will walk through a spider tunnel maze in the lounge side, which will allow them to explore “five rooms of naughty terror,” which may or may not contain gothic dolls, contortionists from Queer Circus Girl Productions, and more.

Lady Doo Moi’s Naughty Nightmares

On the live side, the real magic happens. Eleven entertainers performing double sets, some including fire and aerial performances, will take on the personae of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, werewolves, ghosts, and more.

Doo Moi says she’s “dusting off her boots” and bringing back an award-winning Pink Floyd-inspired The Wall performance that’s guaranteed to be a “creepy, fun, cool act.”

She’s been doing a lot of “hunting and gathering” to provide this sexy, interactive experience. And, she says, she derives a great deal of inspiration for this from helping her mother build haunted houses every year as a child.

“As a kid growing up watching, learning, helping, and being a character in the haunted house for pretty much every year of my childhood that I can remember, it’s part of the creativity I’ve got instilled in my brain, and to do this is like a dream come true for me,” she says.
Naughty Nightmares! A Haunted House of Burlesque, Club Spectrum, Saturday, October 26th, 8:30-11:59 p.m., $20 for general admission, $30 for a single VIP seat.

Afternoon Delight Burlesque Show at Crosstown Arts

To borrow a line from ’70s-era hitmakers, the Starland Vocal Band, “Everything’s a little clearer in the light of day.” Sure, burlesque shows usually don’t start bumping and grinding ’til deep in the middle of the late night, but who doesn’t look forward to a little afternoon delight now and again?

The Afternoon Delight burlesque is a benefit for the Mid-South Food Bank, showcasing the skinful talent shake-show vets Cherie Cheezcake, Mai Oui, and Vivica Noir. The complete roster reads like a who’s who of Memphis’ titillatingest titillators. The event is hosted by Memphis comic Katrina Coleman and climaxes with what is being described as a “shimmy contest.”

“Worms wiggle,” Coleman says, trying to distinguish the shimmy from jiggles and bounces. “And you shake when you’re cold. A shimmy has a point to it. A good shimmy involves eye contact, a smile, and moving what your mama gave you.” While a proper shimmy may be enhanced by fringe, feathers, beads, and other things that sparkle and catch light, Coleman doesn’t think burlesque attire is necessary to perform quality work.

“It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing,” she says, evoking the spirit of Martha and the Vandellas. “I’ve seen good shimmies performed in an oversized Tweety Bird T-shirt. If you need samples of what a good shimmy is, go to YouTube and find some of those old Motown girl bands. They did it right.”

The Grind

Oh sure. Everybody knows the notorious Bettie Page, whose exotic beauty has inspired generations of punk-rock girls to pluck their eyebrows and cut their hair into bangs. But who remembers Lorraine Lane, the bawdy puppeteer who danced, quite literally, with the devil, to the amazement of anyone fortunate enough to catch the scantily clad illusionist’s astonishing act? Who can recall Sally Rand and her cleverly placed fans, or the gravity-defying antics of Tempest Storm, or the extraordinarily sweet Candy Barr? Who’s ready to give it up for the great ladies of burlesque’s golden age, the women who, with nothing but a shimmy, a shake, and a whole lot of sequins, once defined sexiness? The hard-skating girls of the Memphis Roller Derby, that’s who.

On Saturday, December 8th, the lovely, if somewhat intimidating, ladies of the Memphis Roller Derby will turn the Hi-Tone Café into an old-school shake shack with (ahem) artistic dancing and burlesque skits performed throughout the evening. The roller girls will be joined in their ironically erotic endeavors by the Memphis Belles, a group of local models who enjoy re-creating the look, and more importantly the mood, of classic pin-up images by artists such as Gil Elvgren and glamour photographer Bunny Yeager.

DJ Steve Anne will get the party started, and punk patriarchs Ross Johnson and Jeff Evans have assembled an all-star lineup of local garage rockers to keep the fringe shaking and the tassels twirling deep into the late night.

Memphis Roller Derby’s second annual “Ho, Ho, Ho Burlesque Show” at The Hi-Tone Café. Saturday, December 8th. Admission $10.
