Top 20 Memphis Music Videos of 2016 (Part 1)

2016 was a good year for music videos by Memphis artists, musicians and filmmakers alike. I resist making a ranked list of movies in my year-end wrap up, but I know the crowd demands them, so every year I indulge my nerdery by ranking the music videos that have appeared in the Flyer’s Music Video Monday blog series. Since I sometimes go back into the vault for MVM posts, this competition is limited to videos that were uploaded since my Top Ten of 2015 post. (This proved to be a source of disappointment, since Breezy Lucia’s brilliant video for Julien Baker’s “Something” was in the top five until I discovered it had been uploaded in 2014).  Last year, I did a top ten. This year, there were so many good videos, I decided to do a top 20.

A good music video creates a synergy between the music and the action on the screen. It doesn’t have to have a story, but arresting images, fascinating motion through the frame, and meticulous editing are musts.   I watched all of the videos and assigned them scores on both quality of video and quality of song. This was brought the cream to the top, but my scoring system proved to be inadequately granular when I discovered seven videos tied for first place, five tied for second, and three tied for third, forcing me to apply a series of arbitrary and increasingly silly criteria until I had an order I could live with. So if you’re looking for objectivity, you won’t find it here. As they say, it’s an honor to just be on the list.

The two halves of this video couldn’t be more different, but somehow it all fits together. I liked this video a lot better when I revisited it than when I first posted a few months ago, so this one’s a grower.

14. Dead Soldiers ft. Hooten Hollers “16 Tons”

There’s nothing fancy in this video, just some stark monochrome of the two combined bands belting out the Tennessee Ernie Ford classic. But it’s just what the song needs. This is the perfect example of how simplicity is often a virtue for music videos.

New Orleans-based video artist 9ris 9ris created abstract colorscapes with vintage video equipment for this updated Goner re-release of Jay Reatard’s early-century collaboration with rocker/model/DJ Alix Brown and Destruction Unit’s Ryan Rousseau.

11. Deering & Down “Spaced Out Like An Astronaut”

In a departure for the Memphis by way of Alaska folk rockers, the golden voiced Deering lets guitarist Down take the lead while she put on the Major Tom helmet and created this otherworldly video.

Strong Local Offerings Lead Indie Memphis Lineup

Indie Memphis announced its full lineup for the 2016 festival at a bustling preview party at the Rec Room last night. 

Bad, Bad Men,

The most striking feature of the 150-film collection is the strongest presence by local filmmakers since the early-2000s heyday of DIY movies. The Hometowner Competition boasts six feature films, including Old School Pictures’ Bad, Bad Men, a wild comedy of kidnapping and petty revenge by directors Brad Ellis and Allen Gardner, who have racked up several past Indie Memphis wins. Bluff City indie film pioneer Mike McCarthy will debut his first feature-length documentary Destroy Memphis, a strikingly heartfelt film about the fight to save Libertyland and the Zippin Pippen rollercoaster. Four first-time entrants round out the Hometowner competition: Lakethen Mason’s contemporary Memphis music documentary Verge, Kathy Lofton’s healthcare documentary I Am A Caregiver, Flo Gibs look at lesbian and trangender identity Mentality: Girls Like Us, and Madsen Minax’s magical realist tale of lunch ladies and gender confusion Kairos Dirt and the Errant Vacuum. 

‘Silver Elves’


Usually, Hometowner short films comprise a single, popular, programming block; This year, there are enough qualified films to fill four blocks. Sharing the opening night of the festival with the previously announced Memphis documentary The Invaders is a collection of short films produced by recipients of the Indie Grant program, including G.B. Shannon’s family dramedy “Broke Dick Dog”, Sara Fleming’s whimsical tour of Memphis “Carbike”, Morgan Jon Fox’s impressionistic dramatization of the 1998 disappearance of Rhodes student Matthew Pendergrast “Silver Elves”; Indie Grant patron Mark Jones’ “Death$ In A Small Town”, actor/director Joseph Carr’s “Returns”, experimental wizard Ben Siler (working under the name JEBA)’ “On The Sufferings Of The World”, and “How To Skin A Cat”, a road trip comedy by Laura Jean Hocking and yours truly. 

Other standouts in the Hometowner Shorts category include three offerings from Melissa Sweazy: the fairy tale gone dark “Teeth”; “A.J”, a documentary about a teenage boy dealing with grief after a tragic accident, co-directed with Laura Jean Hocking; and “Rundown: The Fight Against Blight In Memphis. Edward Valibus’ soulful dark comedy “Calls From The Unknown”, Nathan Ross Murphy’s “Bluff”, and Kevin Brooks’ “Marcus”, all of which recently competed for the Louisiana Film Prize, will be at the festival, as will Memphis Film Prize winner McGehee Montheith’s “He Coulda Gone Pro”. 

The revived Music Video category features videos from Marco Pave, Star & Micey, Preauxx, The Bo-Keys, Vending Machine, Nots, Caleb Sweazy, Faith Evans Ruch, Marcella & Her Lovers, John Kilzer & Kirk Whalum, Alex duPonte, Alexis Grace, and Zigadoo Moneyclips. 

Internationally acclaimed films on offer include legendary director Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson, starring Adam Driver; Manchester By The Sea from Kenneth Lonergan; and Indie Memphis alum Sophia Takal’s Always Shine. Documentary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson’s spectacular, world-spanning Cameraperson, assembled over the course of her 25 year career, promises to be a big highlight.

Music Video Monday: Caleb Sweazy

Today’s Music Video Monday’s could prove fatal. 

Today we have the world premiere of the latest single from Caleb Sweazy’s Music + Arts / Blue Barrel Records release Lucky Or Strong. The video for “Bluebird Wings” was directed by his wife Melissa Anderson Sweazy. who calls it “Double Indemnity meets ‘Last Dance with Mary Jane’. I¹ve long been a fan of noir films and I¹m particularly fascinated by the trope of the femme fatale, the construct of the dangerous, duplicitous woman who often has a deeply conflicted, cat-and-mouse relationship with the detective. But maybe its more like a dog with a squirrel. What happens when the chase is over and she finally catches her prey?”

The video stars Caleb Sweazy and the Memphis Flyer’s own Eileen Townsend. It was shot by Ryan Earl Parker, who also did the outstanding color work in post production, and edited by Laura Jean Hocking.

Music Video Monday: Caleb Sweazy World Premiere

Does this Monday morning feel like a punch in the face? Music Video Monday is here to help! 

We’ve got the world premiere of the new video “Lucky or Strong”, the title track from Caleb Sweazy’s new album on Memphis’ Blue Barrel Records imprint. The folk rocker directed this video, which was shot in Downtown Memphis at Envision Gym. Sweazy appears as a boxer having a bad day opposite Jerome Hardaway. Brian Krueger and Envision’s Mark Akin appear as the fighters’ trainers. Caleb’s wife Melissa Anderson Sweazy produced the video, which features cinematography by John Paul Clark and Laura Jean Hocking editing.

After being on the road for nearly three weeks, I’m back in M-town with another Weekend Roundup for you. Sweet Soul, Bloody Rippers, and Earth Signs: Local Record Reviews

Cities Aviv Your Discretion Is Trust (Collect Records)

Sure this is the Record Reviews column and Gavin Mays (aka Cities Aviv) moved to Brooklyn a few years ago, but during his time here Mays constantly put Memphis underground rap on the national map. His latest album Your Discretion Is Trust was released digitally this week and is available for download on iTunes as well as Spotify. The 14 tracks on Your Discretion Is Trust see Mays staying within the confines of his earlier work (specifically 2014’s Come to Life), and longtime producer RPLD GHSTS appears on multiple tracks, including “Is this Alright” and “Earth Signs.” On the opening track “Anticipation,” Mays raps about mobbing through the city with his crew “who take no lives” one minute, and then shifts to contemplating his existence the next. Such vast changes in lyrical content are par for the course in a Cities Aviv track, and Your Discretion Is Trust is yet another example of the many different ideas Mays is capable of executing in the studio. The samples get pretty psychedelic as the fourth album from Cities Aviv unfolds, especially by the mid-album track “Earth Signs.” Even if this is a surprise record, the songwriting on Your Discretion Is Trust is fully realized, and Mays sounds like an artist at the top of his game throughout most of the album.

Caleb Sweazy Lucky or Strong
(Blue Barrel Records)

Caleb Sweazy’s fourth studio album was recorded at Music+Arts Studio in Memphis by producer Kevin Houston (Sid Selvidge, North Mississippi Allstars). Sweazy enlisted some notable Memphis players for his Blue Barrel Records debut, including Jessie Dakota (Memphis Dawls) on drums, Logan Hanna (Grace Askew) on guitar, and John C. Stubblefield (Lucero) on keys and upright bass. Lucky or Strong was recorded completely live and finds Sweazy recalling bittersweet tales that cover everything from an old Model A Ford to WWI. Sweazy claims to like songs that make the listener feel happy and sad at the same time, and this collection of guitar-driven, bluesy folk rock is sure to do just that. With this lineup of prominent Memphis musicians and producer Houston at the helm, Lucky or Strong is a good indication that Sweazy is a local songwriter worth paying attention to.

Useless Eaters Singles 2011-2014 (Slovenly Records)

Seth Sutton has been cranking out garage rock longer than some Memphis bands stay together, and he’s got the back catalog to prove it. His first single as Useless Eaters came out six years ago, and he’s released more than a dozen more since then, not to mention a handful of full-length albums, split singles, and a smattering of cassettes. The 13 tracks on the Singles 2011-2014 cover a pivotal moment for Useless Eaters, a time when Sutton was experimenting with new songs, new ideas, and perhaps most importantly, new bandmates. Different cities shaped the songs on this collection (recording sessions took place in Nashville, Oakland, and Melbourne, Australia), and the songs range from straightforward garage punk tunes like “I Hate the Kids” to downer psych rock jams like “Addicted to the Blade.” For anyone just getting familiar with Useless Eaters (this is the first time we’ve ever written about them), this collection on Slovenly is a great place to start, especially because most of these singles have been sold out for quite some time.

Mary Owens Sweet Soul
(Blue Tom Records)

Mary Owens’ debut album is on Blue Tom records, the in-house label at the University of Memphis and also the home of Mason Jar Fireflies and Drew Erwin. Recorded by Boo Mitchell, Sweet Soul is a collection of Owens’ first songs as a solo artist, although she sure sounds like a singer who’s been honing her craft for years. Owens’ vocal approach sits somewhere in between country music and R&B, mixing elements of both genres to create a unique, soulful sound that is distinctly Memphis. Pre-orders for Owens’ first album included the option for a recorded personalized cover of the buyer’s choosing, proving that while Owens’ might be young, she’s already got complete confidence in her voice. Sweet Soul is available for the first time this week.

Skateland on Summer

6b06/1247863150-skateland.jpg Memphis had other roller-skating rinks before this one — Rainbow Lake and East End come to mind — but none of them had the visual impact of Skateland. And I’m talking about the original building, when it was located on the north side of Summer Avenue.

Drivers on Summer could hardly miss the clean lines of the massive building just east of Mendenhall, with a facade of rough stone that framed a wall of glass panels. “SKATELAND” was spelled out in red neon along the roof, and three winged shoes — complete with spinning neon wheels — provided a crowning touch. Anyone still not clear about what went on there could also read, in giant red neon letters, “Roller Skate for Health.”

Inside, sweeping trusses of laminated wood supported a high wooden dome that arched over one of the largest rinks in town. A neon signboard mounted on the back wall gave skaters their instructions: “All Skate,” “Trios,” “Reverse,” “Grand March,” and when the session came to an end, “Skates Off.”

What Goes Around

After musician Caleb Sweazy and his wife moved to Memphis, he hauled a large load of cardboard to a recycling center on Jackson.

“I had been saving it in my garage,” he says. “We had a lot of boxes from moving and buying stuff for our house. Everything comes in so much packaging.”

Sweazy had checked the city of Memphis Web site and found that the city’s residential recycling program would pick up cans, plastic bottles, glass, and paper, but not cardboard.

“It wasn’t as comprehensive as when we were living in Los Angeles,” Sweazy says of the program. “The big garbage bin you roll to the curb? We had one that size for garbage, one for recycling, and one for yard stuff.”

But just last month, as Sweazy was planning a second trip to the recycling center, the city announced it would begin accepting cardboard.

“International Paper came to us and said, ‘Hey, is there any way we can help you guys get corrugated cardboard and paperboard packaging into your program?'” says Andy Ashford, the city’s recycling and composting administrator.

Ashford says the main obstacle was collection.

“Cardboard is a bulky item. It was a matter of getting it into a collection vehicle,” he says. With help from IP, the city looked at how cardboard recycling was done in similarly sized cities and did some tests. The recycling trucks have two side chambers — one for paper, the other for plastic, metal and glass — and now have slots for cardboard items.

“When [cardboard] was cut to the proper size, our trucks seemed to dump okay,” Ashford says. “Cardboard [was not] included in our processing contract from the early ’90s, so we had to convince them we could deliver the product.”

Ashford guesses the addition of cardboard will result in a 5 to 6 percent increase in recyclables volume, adding somewhere between 1,000 to 2,000 additional tons of recyclables each year. In the last week, the city program collected an additional five tons of recycling, a move Ashford calls “encouraging.” He could also call it fiscally sound.

Each ton of recycling earns the city $25. It doesn’t cover the entire cost of the program, but it certainly helps. And with more people recycling, maybe it could.

The city’s recycling bins hold 18 gallons — the most common size nationwide, according to Ashford. Residents are encouraged to put their overflow into paper grocery sacks, but a larger container might entice them into recycling more.

“As our materials continue to grow, we may evolve to a larger, wheeled container,” Ashford says.

The city’s solid waste management program has also broken ground on a household hazardous-waste facility, expected to open to the public in December. The facility will recycle things such as batteries and flourescent lightbulbs. Flourescent bulbs are considered more “green” than traditional bulbs because they are more energy efficient, but should not be thrown away because they contain mercury.

Both the changes seem promising, but there are a lot of things the city and its residents could be doing — little, simple things that would help make a difference.

I remember flying into the Salt Lake City airport last spring and having a complete “duh” moment. The airport had been redone for the 2002 winter Olympics and was beautiful. But more impressive were the recycling bins for newspapers sitting next to virtually every trashcan.

Downtown — arguably Memphis’ current showpiece — could use some help in this area. Waste management is a residential program. Even City Hall isn’t served by the city’s recycling program; it’s served by a private recycling company. Shouldn’t public spaces have more places to recycle? And couldn’t tax-paying businesses — corporate citizens — be included in some sort of citywide recycling program?

A friend of mine has an idea of putting recycling bins for plastic bottles and cans downtown. If a recycling center were located nearby, area homeless could take the cans and bottles and redeem them for cash. Or the city could recycle them in other ways.

On the beaches of Fort Lauderdale, recycling containers are buried five feet into the ground, enabling money-saving pick-ups once every few weeks. The containers are designed to reduce odors, and keep animals and insects out.

In Pasadena, California, bottles from bars and restaurants are picked up as part of a pilot program. The city got a grant that enabled them to buy collection bins for the restaurants, as well as collection trucks.

Closer to home, the Tennessee legislature has a bottle bill pending. Under the proposal, consumers would pay a 5 cent deposit for bottles at the point of purchase and would get that deposit back when they returned the bottle. Consider it a cash incentive to recycle.

I’m not saying that it’s going to be easy (although most of these things don’t seem hard, just a little labor intensive). But we should be looking at ways to make recycling work for the city, not finding reasons why it can’t.

Caleb Sweazy says he started recycling because he couldn’t continue throwing things away and feel good about himself: “The idea of all this stuff going into a landfill really bothered me. I pictured all these plastic bottles — imagine if you had to keep that stuff and carry it around with you.”

And, in a way, we do.
