The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, December 23-29

Things are understandably slow in the live-stream world, what with Christmas breaks and the general loss of urgency felt by the general public about social distancing. Some still carry the torch for extreme prudence, and if you’re one of them, there are several treats in store. No telling what Amy LaVere and Will Sexton have cooking for this Thursday’s revue, which will include many friends and secret Santas. There’s always the indefatigable Evil Rain, who call B-Side Memphis home, and the week is capped off there with a rare show by one of Memphis’ most inventive bands, Graber Grass. Look for all the bands’ virtual tip jars, and get into giving this Christmas!

Music Video Monday: The Sheiks

Music Video Monday wishes you happy freakin’ holidays!

The operative word is “freak” with The Sheiks. The boffo Bluff City combo usually plays a “Christmas in Space” show about this time every year, but with the damn pandemic messing up the program, they’ve opted for a video greeting card to the rock-deprived masses. It’s called “Everybody’s Merry,” and it goes places you might not have wanted to go — namely, into the void with spaceboy (and director) Jesse James Davis. Hop on Astro-Santa’s lap for the most deranged three and a half minutes of the holiday season—and in 2020, that’s really saying something.

Christmas is a Dish Best Served Blue: Elvis’ Song of Holiday Longing Lives

Sony Music Entertainment

The holidays are back, and with them come the inevitable festive songs. Yet not everyone is feeling so chipper. While a “Blue Christmas” might be construed by some as an expression of great relief over the outcome of last month’s election, who can deny that one of Elvis Presley’s most cherished hits expresses no such jubilation, only an absence?

As an article on webmd.com notes, “this time of year may trigger a bout of the blues or perhaps ignite a depression that has been smoldering under the surface for months.”

And so it is that the irony and poignancy of “Blue Christmas” has touched a collective nerve for 63 years now. Indeed, the song has been one of the King’s biggest hits, and the collection from which it’s drawn, Elvis’ Christmas Album, has joined the rarefied ranks of records that the Recording Industry Association of America® (RIAA) has certified not as gold, not as platinum, but as diamond — reserved for records that have sold 10 million units or more.

In honor of such longevity, Sony Legacy has released the first official music video for the song. Created by MoSoMoS, a New York animation studio led by Mathew Amonson, the video follows the stories of three characters who can’t be with loved ones during this time of togetherness. Like the song, the video mixes the isolation and despondency of the lyrics with the inherent beauty of the music and Elvis’ voice. It’s a lovely diversion for those of us who may find that all the tidings of joy merely mark an empty chair or bed or home, with only memories of past joy, and a hope for better tomorrows, to sustain us.

MEMernet: College GameDay, Christmas Music — Already

Football Town

Memphis internet bled Tiger blue this weekend. Someone in your feed posted something like this from Reddit user u/Chandler_Weber.

Kings of Gameday

Jerry the King Lawler and ESPN’s Lee Corso joked during the network’s College GameDay broadcast from Beale Street Saturday. GameDay posted this picture to Twitter with the caption, “From one king to another … thank you, Memphis!”

‘Tis the Season

FM 98.9 The Bridge switched to Christmas music on Halloween day. The Memphis subreddit was equal parts gloom and glee on the decision.

But Reddit user u/fennourtine said, “If u mad about it, go write a couple albums about turkey and cornucopias and shit for them to play.”
