Total Virus Case Count Tops 87,000

New virus case numbers rose by 110 over the last 24 hours. It’s the second day in a row the number has swelled into the triple digits. The new cases put the total of all positive cases in Shelby County since March at 87,088.  

Total current active cases of the virus — the number of people known to have COVID-19 in the county — rose slightly to 1,531. The number reached a record high of more than 8,000 in late December. The figure had been as low as 1,299 in September, and rose above 2,000 in October. The new active case count represents 1.8 percent of all cases of the virus reported here since March.

As of Monday in Shelby County, 105,338 COVID-19 vaccine doses had been given. As of Monday morning, 30,250 people had been given two doses for full vaccination, and 75,088 had been given a single dose.

The Shelby County Health Department reported that 838 tests were given in the last 24 hours. Since March, 1,007,168 tests have been given since March. This figure includes multiple tests given to some people.

The latest weekly positivity rate fell again for the sixth week in a row to 6.4 percent. That’s down from the 7.4 percent rate recorded in the previous week, and down from the record-high 17.5 percent in late December.

No new deaths were reported over the last 24 hours. The total death toll now stands at 1,460.

The average age of those who have died in Shelby County is 74, according to the health department. The age of the youngest COVID-19 death was 13. The oldest person to die from the virus was 103.

New virus case numbers rose by 113 over the last 24 hours. It’s the first time in days the number has swelled into the triple digits. The new cases put the total of all positive cases in Shelby County since March at 86,978.  

Total current active cases of the virus — the number of people known to have COVID-19 in the county — is 1,527. The number reached a record high of more than 8,000 in late December. The figure had been as low as 1,299 in September, and rose above 2,000 in October. The new active case count represents 1.8 percent of all cases of the virus reported here since March.

In Shelby County, 105,338 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been given. As of Monday morning, 30,250 people had been given two doses for full vaccination, and 75,088 had been given a single dose.

The Shelby County Health Department reported that 1,006,330 tests have been given since March. This figure includes multiple tests given to some people.

In Shelby County, 100,324 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been given. As of Wednesday morning, 28,123 people had been given two doses for full vaccination, and 72,201 had been given a single dose.

Winter Weather Closes All Vaccine Sites Until Saturday

Shelby County Health Department nurse Janice Stahl, RN was first in line to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Nurse Stahl provides COVID-19 testing at the Collierville clinic and Shelby Farms clinic.

Severe winter weather has closed all Shelby County COVID-19 vaccination sites.

Here’s the latest from the Shelby County Health Department:

All Shelby County Health Department facilities and the following COVID-19 vaccination sites will remain closed through Saturday, February 20, 2021, due to inclement weather and the threat of hazardous driving conditions.

Those sites include:

· Appling Inspection Station – 2355 Appling City Cove, Memphis, 38133

· Pipkin Building – 940 Early Maxwell Road, Memphis, 38104

· Germantown Baptist Church – 9450 Poplar Avenue, Germantown, 38139

· Southwest Tennessee Community College Whitehaven Center – 1234 Finley Road, Memphis, 38116

· CSFP Warehouse – 1020 South Bellevue, Memphis, 38106

All appointments scheduled for Tuesday, February 16th, through Saturday, February 20th, will be rescheduled to a future date.

Next week all partners will be working diligently to get vaccine to the Shelby County community.
