MVM favDaz Rinko just dropped a new song and video from his upcoming EP. “Ladies Night” is another future house-tinged collaboration between Daz and Arnold Francis (aka SPRILL). The beat says party all night, but the lyrics tell a different story.
“‘Ladies Night’ is really a record about me reflecting over my family’s upbringing, and me coming to the realization that the struggles they went through shaped me as a person,” Rinko says. “The paranoia of struggling, living paycheck to paycheck my entire life, the struggles of having a child without being able to support them emotionally, and the feeling of being alone in the present because I’m always working to be stable are things I touch on and continue to think about.”
The car-centric video was shot on South Main by Morgan Bell and edited by Andrew McGinnis. Get funky!

Daz Rinko is back with anouther fantastic video. This one is for his new song “Candy Mane,” which started life with a beat by producer Cheap Limousine. The Italo-disco-infused track set off a chain of mental connections for Daz. “When I heard this track from Cheap Limousine, I immediately knew it was the perfect track for a vibe I’d been wanting to create. So, I went into creating this song with the urge of creating that nostalgic vibe. With the video, I wanted to bring that nostalgic vibe you get from the song to life visually. My hope is that every time you listen and/or watch the video, you immediately groove and allow the song to take you to a happy place.”
The video, directed by The Avenue and shot by Myron Swift-Parker with projection animation by Andrew McGinnis, looks back to the VHS era for color inspiration. Take a look:

Memphis-bred hip-hop artist Daz Rinko releases a sweet summer single and music video with “Juice.” The song, produced by Cheap Limousine, marks Rinko’s first release in almost a year, and features additional vocals and guitar from Aaron James.
The beat and warbling keyboard riffs are infectious, setting up a cool and easy ’90s hip-hop vibe. That feeling is underscored by the text and illustrations superimposed on the live-action shots of Rinko checking his refrigerator and walking through the neighborhood. It’s the sonic equivalent of loafing around the neighborhood on long summer afternoons.
McKenzii Webster
In speaking about the single, Rinko said in a statement, “There are kind of a lot of layers when it comes to ‘Juice.’ Like off rip, it was just a vibe until I started getting into the lyrics. Many people will hear a summertime bop, but it has a darker, more serious side to it. I use juice as a metaphor for alcohol. So, throughout the song, I am talking about addiction/alcoholism.”

The layers to the tagline, “All I needed was the juice,” become crystal clear when viewed through that lens. Still, for its heavier subject matter, the song is a smooth complement to a summer day, and the final shot — of Rinko swimming, submerged in luminescent orange-colored juice — is memorable and affecting.
Memphis music was vibrant as ever in 2018. Every week, the Memphis Flyer brings you the latest and best video collaborations between Bluff City filmmakers and musicians in our Music Video Monday series. To assemble this list, I rewatched all 34 videos that qualified for 2018’s best video and scored them according to song, concept, cinematography, direction and acting, and editing. Then I untangled as many ties as I could and made some arbitrary decisions. Everyone who made the list is #1 in my book!
10. Louise Page “Blue Romance”
Flowers cover everything in this drag-tastic pop gem, directed by Sam Leathers.

3. Cedric Burnside “Wash My Hands”
Beale Street Caravan’s I Listen To Memphis series produced a whole flood of great music videos from director Christian Walker and producer Waheed Al Qawasmi. I could have filled out the top ten with these videos alone, but consider this smoking clip of Cedric Burnside laying down the law representative of them all.

2. Don Lifted “Poplar Pike”
I could have filled out the top five with work from Memphis video auteur Don Lifted, aka Lawrence Matthews, who put three videos on MVM this year. To give everybody else a chance, I picked the transcendent clip for “Poplar Pike” created by Mattews, Kevin Brooks, and Nubia Yasin.

1. Lucero “Long Way Back Home”
Sorry, everybody, but you already knew who was going to be number one this year. It’s this mini-movie created by director Jeff Nichols, brother of Lucero frontman Ben Nichols. Starring genuine movie star (and guy who has played Elvis) Michael Shannon, “Long Way Back Home” is the best Memphis music video of 2018 by a country mile.

MVM is back on the hardest Monday of the year with a double shot of Daz Rinko.
Oh, hi. Didn’t see you there. I was just enjoying some delicious ice cream with Music Video Monday fave Daz Rinko. Daz has had a big year, with not one, but two, appearances on this hallowed blog, so he deserves a treat.
In fact, we all deserve a treat. It’s been a hard year. Daz and McKenzii Webster and 35Miles have not one but two songs in one video! “Vanilla Ice” and “No Limit (Bigger Picture)” are from the album Black Boy Joy 2: The Bigger Picture. Enjoy!

Got those Monday morning blues? MVM has a video that feels you.
Daz Rinko’s day is not going well in his new video for “Liam Gallagher”, a single from his August, 2017 EP “Black Boy Joy”. His car won’t start, his world is spinning round, and his friends don’t care. At least he’s got some Aldo’s pizza to serve as a short term Oasis.
