Grizzlies Fall to Celtics, 119-109

The Memphis Grizzlies headed to Boston for a Sunday afternoon game on national television, and it didn’t go well.

Let’s get into it.

How do you solve a problem like the Boston Celtics? I don’t know, and clearly the Grizzlies don’t either.

Boston beat them on the boards, on the assists, and from three-point range. Getting cooked from outside is not a new phenomenon for this Grizzlies team, but the disparity in three-point shooting was on display and it was not a good look. Trading two-pointers for threes on the other end of the floor isn’t going to give the Grizzlies the outcome they want.

Also, getting beat on the offensive glass, 14-3, highlighted just how much Memphis misses Steven Adams. Xavier Tillman Sr is a lot of things, but a 7-foot kiwi that feasts on rebounds is not one of them.

The Celtics played nine players in Sunday’s matchup, and eight of them scored in double figures. In contrast, the Grizzlies played 10 players and only five of them scored in double figures. Jaren Jackson Jr getting into foul trouble was also a hindrance that hurts even more with Adams out.

Ja Morant mentioned recently that he wasn’t stressing over any Western Conference teams, but the Celtics were on his mind. Sunday’s matchup shows that match-up remains a valid concern for Memphis.

Grizzlies’ fans did get their first look at Luke Kennard, who put up 4 points and 3 rebounds in his Grizzlies debut. Kennard was a trade deadline move that is supposed to get more three-point shooting for Memphis. They are definitely going to need it for the stretch run after the All-Star break.

By The Numbers:

Ja Morant had a game-high 25 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists. Morant struggled from distance, shooting 0 of 4 from beyond the arc.

Desmond Bane finished the night with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks, while shooting 3 of 7 from beyond the arc.

Jaren Jackson Jr closed out with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal. Jackson fouled out in just over 20 minutes of playing time.

Dillon Brooks ended up with 11 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists, while shooting 3 of 7 from three-point range.

Brandon Clarke led the bench unit with 14 points and 2 rebounds, with a very efficient 7 of 8 field goal attempts.

Who Got Next?

The Grizzlies will be returning home to FedExForum for their final game before the All-Star break. They will host the Utah Jazz on Wednesday, February 15th. Tip-off is at 7 PM CST.

Grizzlies Fall to Raptors 106-103 in Third Straight Loss

The Grizzlies are in a slump, that much is clear. After a season-high ten game winning streak, the Memphis Grizzlies have lost 8 of their last 9 games. Sunday afternoon they faced off against the Toronto Raptors, and due to faltering in the fourth quarter, lost a game they once led by 15 points.

Let’s get into it.

Memphis has been missing Steven Adams in the lineup, but on this Sunday, they were also without star Ja Morant, due to wrist soreness, and Dillon Brooks, who was serving a suspension after brawling with Donovan Mitchell in Cleveland.

Poor ball handling and sloppy execution on behalf of the Grizzlies led to the Raptors putting up 23 more field goal attempts than Memphis. 23. That’s just embarrassing, as is the 20 turnovers that Toronto turned into 29 points. And that isn’t even getting into six missed free throws in a game they lost by three points.

Whatever else happens, there needs to be a “come to Jesus” meeting behind the scenes. Because these are not the actions of a team that is serious about contending for a championship.

By The Numbers:

Desmond Bane led all scorers with 26 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, and 1 blocked shot, while shooting 4 of 7 from three-point range. This is the Desmond Bane the Grizzlies need for the rest of the season.

Jaren Jackson Jr finished with 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks.

Santi Aldama was moved into the starting position in place of Brooks, and he closed out with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks.

Xavier Tillman Sr assumed the starting center role and put up 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Now on to the next one, and put this one in the rear-view mirror.

Who Got Next?

The Grizzlies are returning to their home floor Tuesday night against the Chicago Bulls. Tip-off is at 7 PM CST.

Grizzlies’ Road Woes Continue

On the second night of a back-to-back, the Grizzlies lost their second-consecutive game. The hot Cleveland Cavaliers defeated Memphis, 128-113, before a nationally televised audience on TNT. Memphis has now lost seven of its last eight games and six straight road games.

The Grizzlies had a tough time dealing with Cleveland’s Jared Allen and Evan Mobley. Memphis was without Jaren Jackson, Jr., who sat out due to right thigh soreness. (Jackson was visibly limping in the loss to Portland on Wednesday night.) The Grizzlies are also missing starting center Steven Adams for an extended period of time with a PCL sprain.

Desmond Bane led the Grizzlies with 25 points while connecting on 6-of-7 from three. Ja Morant added 24 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Santi Aldama recorded a career-high 21 points, tying a career best with four 3-pointers, and 10 rebounds.

Dillon Brooks and Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell were both ejected after a scuffle midway through the third quarter. Brooks is likely to receive a fine and or suspension for hitting Mitchell in the groin.

All-Star Reserves and Rising Stars

Prior to the game, Morant and Jackson, Jr. were selected as All-Star reserves for the 72nd NBA-All Star game in Salt Lake City, Utah. All-Star festivities are Feb. 17-19. It was the first time in franchise history that multiple players were selected as All-Stars.

Morant became the first player in team history to be selected in back-to-back All-Star games. Last season he was named as a starter. Morant is averaging 27.4 points, 8.3 assists, and 5.8 rebounds per game this season.

It’s the first All-Star selection for Jackson, Jr. After missing 14 games at the start of the season, the 23-year-old has anchored one of the best defenses in the league. He is averaging 16.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.3 blocks and 1.0 in 35 games this season, and has recorded 4 or more blocks in 15 games.

Grizzlies two-way player Kenneth Lofton, Jr. was selected to participate in the Jordan Rising Stars, representing the Memphis Hustle. Junior is one of seven G-League players selected. In 10 games for the Hustle, Lofton is averaging 18.3 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.4 steals.

Memphis Loses to Suns as Late Rally Falls Short

A 38-point fourth quarter from helped the Grizzlies rally from a double-digit deficit and trim the Suns lead to two points, but Phoenix prevailed 112-110 to tie the season series at 2-2. At one point in the game, Phoenix was up as many as 29 points.

After winning 11 straight games, Memphis has now lost two games in a row by a total of three points.

Ja Morant led the Grizzlies with 27 points, eight assists, and five rebounds and Desmond Bane added 24 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Ziaire Williams chipped in season-high tying 16 points as a reserve, including a franchise-record 79-foot buzzer-beater to close out the third quarter.

Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins said he was proud of the team’s effort to get back in the game but he was not happy with the team’s road woes.

Jenkins said, “I was proud of them, but I said you can’t come out with that mentality on the road. We’re two games, I think, below .500. We’ve got to get better. This is a great learning opportunity, so we still got a long road trip ahead against really good teams.

“I say we just gotta take it one day at a time,” Jenkins added. “But use this as an opportunity to get better. We haven’t lived up to our standard on the road, but I want to take this as an opportunity, middle of the season, good teams out west — we had this back in December — we’ve got to respond. And I have the belief that our guys will. It may not happen overnight, but luckily they’re aware that we have to be better in these situations.”

Memphis is 11-12 on the road and 20-3 at home.

“Good teams win at home,” Morant told The Athletic’s Kelly Iko in an exclusive. “Great teams win on the road. That’s been our identity since I got here. Road warriors. This year, we haven’t been bringing that intensity on the road.”

“Early on, we missed a lot of shots we normally make,” Morant told the media after the loss. “They were making them on the other end. Obviously, basketball is 48 minutes, a game of runs. I just feel like we got to be better, knowing when our shots aren’t falling, know to lock it in even more on defense then getting stops and then pretty much not dropping our heads after a team scores a couple of times or goes on a run; we just got to come out and be ready to fight.”

“You got to create your own energy,” said Dillon Brooks. “The crowd is a big thing in this league, and you have to find a way to create your own energy. The Western Conference is a tougher conference, so [it’s about] finding a way to create our own energy on this road trip and bouncing back after these two losses.”

Adams, Brooks Lift Memphis to 11th Straight Win

The two best defensive teams in the NBA went back and forth Wednesday night, like a boxing match with uppercuts and body blows. In the end, the Grizzlies’ dogged defense in the final seconds was enough to secure the home victory over Cleveland.

There were 17 lead changes and nine ties. Both teams gave up double digit leads. The Cavaliers were up by 10 early while Memphis was up by as many as 19 in the third quarter.

The Cavaliers held a one-point lead with 27.4 seconds left, when Jaren Jackson Jr. blocked Darius Garland’s driving layup attempt out of bounds. On Cleveland’s ensuing in-bounds attempt, the Grizzlies forced a five-second violation.

With 17 seconds left in the game, Ja Morant attacked the basket with a floater but it bounced off the rim; however, Steven Adams secured the rebound with a tip in for the go-ahead bucket.

Jackson Jr. praised Steven Adams on the intangibles, “He’s the best screener in NBA history and probably the best offensive rebounder ever. When you do those things, it just saves us time and time again.”

While the 16,892 in attendance chanted “DEFENSE!!,” Cleveland brought the ball upcourt and Dillon Brooks blocked a shot by Garland on the game’s final play to give the Grizzlies a 115-114 victory — their 11th-straight.

The 11-game winning streak for Memphis matches the longest in franchise history, and is the longest-active streak in the NBA. The Grizzlies are now 31-13 for the season and 20-3 at FedExForum.

After the game, Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins said, “We found a way. I told the guys afterwards that that’s a great team win; that’s a great team that we just played and competed against for 48 minutes.”

Jenkins went on to say, “Timely buckets, and then that last sequence where we got that five-second counter. Guys executed the game plan coming out of the timeout. I chose not to call a timeout. I trusted the guys to go and make plays. We had talked about the spacing we wanted. Ja [Morant] drives, collapses, three guys come to him, and then Steven [Adams] cleans it up. Big winning play at the end of the eight minutes. First game winner, he said, so he’s definitely hyped.”

“And then the defense on the tail end, we had been switching some,” Jenkins added. “They broke off a pick-and-roll. [Dillon Brooks’] one-on-one defense was phenomenal. [Desmond Bane] shifts, gets back, [Dillon Brooks] then gets the block to seal the win. So, clearly, I just said a lot of things because there was a lot going on in that game. It was two competitive teams that played pretty high-level basketball. There were definitely ebbs and flows, highs and lows, but at the end, we made the plays.”

“I told these guys, ‘This is huge to get a game like this tonight,’ especially playing from behind in the last minute or so. I just said this is a game to grow from. The poise, the conversations that our guys were having, as frantic as it was, they were looking at me, they were looking at each other, and we dialed up the defense that we needed down the stretch, despite them making it really hard on us for the meat of the game.”

Jenkins concluded, “So, it’s great for us. We’ll watch the film tomorrow, talk about the winning plays that we made. … We’ve got to build on it because this is not the last time we’re going to see a game like this.”

Desmond Bane finished with a game-high 25 points, four rebounds, four assists, and five 3-pointers. Morant added 24 points and eight assists.

Off the bench, Santi Aldama chipped in 16 points and two rebounds while making a career-high four 3-pointers. Jackson Jr. filled the stat sheet with 15 points, seven rebounds, four blocks and two steals while Adams had 13 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists.

Aldama credited the team’s chemistry for the winning streak. He said, “I just think that togetherness is what stands out the most. I mean, last year, we were a very good team. I think this year, we have a little bit of a different team, but we just find a way to win games.”

“Today (Wednesday), I think, was a very good test for us,”Aldama added. “I think we haven’t had a game like this in a while. Especially the last two or three possessions were huge for us. We got the five second call. [Jaren Jackson Jr.]’s block before that, [Dillon Brooks]’ game-winning block came, and then the [Steven Adams] tap-in. So, I think that just shows how everybody makes an impact and how together we are, just rooting for each other.”

Memphis’ first 11-game win streak came last season from Dec. 26, 2021 to Jan. 13, 2022. Bane spoke about the difference this time around. He said, “We just take it game by game. Last year, obviously, was our first time doing it, so there was a lot of excitement, but it’s a new season. We’re trying to set new heights and do new things. The past is the past. We’re just focused on one game at a time.”

Grizzlies Top Suns, Extend Winning Streak to 10 Games

Yesterday the Memphis Grizzlies played their 21st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Game against the Phoenix Suns. It was a resounding victory in which the Grizzlies defeated the Suns 136-106, and extended their current winning streak to 10 games, the longest in the NBA.

Let’s get into it.

Before the game tipped off, women’s basketball legend Nancy Lieberman, former NBA stars Gary Payton and Luol Deng, and NFL star Eddie George were all presented with the 18th Annual National Civil Rights Museum Sports Legacy Award.

On the court, the Suns closed out the first quarter with a seven-point lead. The Grizzlies responded by outscoring the Suns 107-70 in the remaining three quarters.

The three-point shooting drought appears to be over for this Grizzlies team — five players had two or more three-point makes.

Turning defense into offense remains one of the cornerstones of Grizzlies basketball, and this game was no exception. Memphis forced Phoenix into 15 turnovers, and then converted those into 24 points on the other end of the floor. Their ability to get stops on the defensive end allowed the Grizzlies to take nine more shot attempts overall than the Suns.

By the Numbers:

Ja Morant had a game-high 29 points and 7 assists, including 5 of 8 from three-point range.

Desmond Bane closed out the night with 28 points, 6 assists, and 2 steals, while shooting 3 of 4 from distance.

Jaren Jackson Jr finished with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, and 6 blocks.

From the second unit, Brandon Clarke put up 13 points and 6 rebounds on 6 of 8 field goal shooting.

Tyus Jones had 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists, and rookie David Roddy put up 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Who Got Next?

The Grizzlies will face off against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday, January 18th at FedEx Forum. Tip-off is at 7 PM CST.

Ja Morant is Must-See TV

On Saturday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the Memphis Grizzlies (29-13) won their ninth straight game, 130-112 over the Indiana Pacers (23-21). The Grizzlies have the longest active win streak in the league.

“That may very well be the best team on the planet right now – they’re very hard to play,” Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said. However, almost no one is talking about the win itself. That’s because almost everyone is talking about Ja Morant’s vicious dunk over Jalen Smith.

Morant has become most definitely must-see TV! People will be discussing that dunk for years to come — until he does one to top it. The dunk has garnered millions of views across social media platforms.

When asked if it was the best dunk of his career, Morant said, “Yeah, easy,” because of its difficulty. “It’s what everybody’s been waiting for — I finally made it this time.”

Morant went on to describe the highlight play, he said, “Basically I left the other defender pretty much at the three-point line and it was just me into my launchpad, went up seeing him come over [to] try to block it. I went for a normal Ja dunk attempt and this time I made it.”

Morant finished with 23 points on 7-of-17 shooting with 10 assists and three rebounds.

It must be the shoes, as Morant alluded to after the game.

The Murray State alum also had a clear message after the game.

Teammate Desmond Bane said, “I ain’t seen nothing like that one. That’s probably going to go down as dunk of the year.” Bane finished with 25 points and eight rebounds, while connecting on 5-of-11 from beyond the arc.

Bally Sports Grizzlies sideline reporter Rob Fischer discussed his reaction to the dunk, “He’s like watching NBA Jam in real life. The kid’s got rocket boosters under them Ja1’s.” Brevin Knight, Bally Sports Grizzlies color analyst said, “My reaction today is speechless. He’s spectacular.”

I think we are all Knight after witnessing that dunk.

“That was the dunk, as Ja said, that people had been waiting for – the elevation, cock of the arm and power of the smash. It had the entire building buzzing – both Pacer and Grizzlies fans, said Pete Pranica, Bally Sports Grizzlies play-by-play announcer. Pranica added, “I wish Indiana had called timeout so we could have really savored it, but the game goes on.”

“I mean, high level play for sure,” Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins on Morant’s dunk. “They had been blitzing him. They had been up, he was just navigating little cracks and seams to get downhill. And then that one, the takeoff spot to where the defender was right at the rim. It was really impressive. That’s a hard finish. … Obviously, that was an emphatic play for us.

When asked if he taught Morant that move, Jenkins said jokingly, “Oh, everything of course. No, that’s his God-given ability. That’s great execution and that’s picking your spots to be aggressive.”

Former NBA great Kevin Garnett praised Morant on Twitter.

The dunk wasn’t the only highlight play from Morant on Saturday, there was an awesome block too.

It was called a goal tend but was overturned after a coach’s challenge.

The Grizzlies will host the Phoenix Suns in the 21st Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Game on Monday. The game will broadcast regionally on Bally Sports Southeast and nationally on TNT. Tip-off it at 5 p.m. CT.

The Grizzlies will look to win their 10th straight game. With a win over the Suns, it will be just the second double-digit winning streak (within a single season) in franchise history. Memphis set a club record last season with an 11-game winning streak from Dec. 26, 2021-Jan. 13, 2022. Memphis might be without Morant, as he’s listed as questionable with left hip soreness.

Grizzlies Rout Pelicans 116-101 in New Year’s Eve Throwdown

Happy New Year. The Memphis Grizzlies are one game back from the top of the Western Conference, and to close out the year they just beat the team ahead of them in the standings, Southwest Division rival the New Orleans Pelicans.

The matchup between these two teams is spicy, with two of the most exciting players in the league – Ja Morant and Zion Williamson –battling it out.

Let’s get into it.

Three-point shooting woes continue to plague the Grizzlies, and in Saturday night’s matchup, they shot a season-low 17.2 percent from distance. But Memphis made up for the lack of outside shooting by dominating down low, outscoring New Orleans 74-44 from the paint.

Big man Steven Adams grabbed a season-high 21 rebounds while helping to hold Jonas Valanciunas to 6 points and 6 rebounds. The two centers were traded for each other in 2021, with Memphis sending Valanciunas to New Orleans in exchange for Adams.

There were some technical difficulties midway through the second quarter when all the game clocks in FedEx Forum lost power, causing a stoppage in play for several minutes. Play resumed with the officials using stopwatches until the clock situation was resolved.

The break in play derailed the Grizzlies’ momentum for the rest of the period and helped the Pelicans to cut a 21-point lead to just three at the half. New Orleans briefly managed a two-point lead during the third quarter, but the Grizzlies did not allow them to keep it for long, dominating the fourth quarter 33-22. Memphis now leads the season series against the Pelicans 2-1.

By the Numbers:

Ja Morant led all scorers with 32 points, 3 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 steals.

Jaren Jackson Jr finished with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, and 6 blocks.

Desmond Bane contributed 18 points and 7 rebounds. Bane is still struggling with three-point shooting since his return to play, and was 1 of 6 from beyond the arc.

Steven Adams had a great night with 10 points, 21 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks.

Dillon Brooks had a quiet night offensively, finishing with just 7 points. What he lacked in offense he more than made up for in defense, with his main defensive assignment being Zion Willamson. It was exactly what the Grizzlies needed from him.

Who Got Next?

The gang is back at it tonight with another home game, facing off against the Sacramento Kings to start off the new year. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. CST.

Brooks Leads Grizzlies Past Raptors

The Memphis Grizzlies defeated the Toronto Raptors 119-106 at Scotiabank Arena on Thursday night after dropping two straight games.

The victory over the Raptors in Toronto was a welcome relief after they had dropped four of their previous five games, including a crushing loss on Christmas Day to the shorthanded Golden State Warriors.

The recent slump has dropped them from first place in the Western Conference to third. They are currently one game behind the Western Conference-leading New Orleans Pelicans and Denver Nuggets.

Many questioned their swagger and competitive spirit after the disappointing losses.

Some were too quick to write off the Grizzlies, but they proved them wrong on Thursday night by just having fun and finding their footing again. The NBA is a long season, and Memphis must continue to take it one game at a time.

All five of Memphis’ starters scored in double figures. Dillon Brooks led the way for Grizzlies with 25 points and six assists for his homecoming. Brooks is from Mississauga, Ontario near Toronto.

After the game, Brooks revealed his coaches want him to be more of a playmaker.

On his six assists, Brooks said, “Kudos to me. I tried to shoot the open ones and I work on my game every single day to be confident in my shot.”

Ja Morant tallied his 12th double-double of the season with 19 points and a career-high 17 assists.

Desmond Bane added 16 points, five rebounds, and two steals. It’s his best game back since his return from injury.

Jaren Jackson Jr. chipped in 15 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Jackson is averaging 3.0 blocks per game this season.

Steven Adams posted his eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and 17 rebounds, while John Konchar added 11 points and seven rebounds as a reserve.

Sharing is Caring

The Grizzlies recorded a season-high 37 assists. Memphis is 8-0 this season when registering 30 assists.

With his 17 assists, Morant recorded the highest assist total by a single Grizzlies player since Jason Williams set a franchise record with 19 more than 20 years ago in March 2002.

Three-Point Shooting

The Grizzlies went 13-of-29 from beyond the arc after going four straight games shooting in the single digits. Brooks shot four, Memphis’ best 3-point shooter Bane connected with three, and Konchar added two 3-point shots.

Grizzlies Get Blasted by the Suns

It was a revenge game for Phoenix, and they fought harder to end the night with a 125-108 victory over Memphis. The loss to Phoenix also snapped Memphis’ seven-game winning streak at home, becoming one of only three teams (Boston, Sacramento) to beat the Grizzlies on their home court this season.

Let’s get into it.

After a thorough walloping on by the Golden State Warriors on the Grizzlies’ first ever Christmas Day game, one would think this Memphis team would rage back with a vengeance. It started well, with the Grizzlies putting the first 8 points on the board, but the Suns looked like the more dominant team.

Desmond Bane has continued to struggle finding his shot since returning from injury. The Grizzlies desperately need his accurate three-point shooting, as the loss to Phoenix marks the fourth consecutive game the Grizzlies have hit a single-digit number of shots from distance.

Memphis struggled to hit the long ball, going just 8 for 30 against the Suns. In today’s NBA, they are going to need to shoot better from beyond the arc if they want to win.

They also need more from their second unit in games like this. The Phoenix bench outscored the Memphis bench 60-41.

We are by no means in panic territory, but I suspect Coach Jenkins is going to have some very strong words for his team after their last two performances.

The Grizzlies will get a chance in the coming weeks to avenge this loss, as they will play Phoenix during the annual MLK game held in Memphis.

By the Numbers:

Ja Morant led all scorers with 34 points and 6 assists. Morant set a new career high for scoring in a single quarter when he put up 22 points in the third quarter.

Desmond Bane was the only other Grizzly to end the night in double figures, finishing with 14 points and 2 rebounds.

Xavier Tillman Sr. led the bench unit with 9 points, and Brandon Clarke followed closely with 8 points.

Who Got Next?

The Grizzlies are taking a quick trip to the frozen north. Thursday night they will be in Toronto to face off against the Raptors. Tip-off is at 6:30 PM CST.
