MEMernet: Paint, Donuts and Such, and a Quick PSA

Memphis on the internet.

Paint

Some folks gently lost their minds recently as a crew was spotted painting the bricks of the former Nineteenth Century Club. The enormous mansion has been home to several restaurants lately and is now taking shape to become Tekila Modern Mexican.

Memphis Heritage said the move was the “last straw” and that the paint job will likely get the property removed from the National Register of Historic Places. One on the Memphis Masonry Preservation Society Facebook group suggested a protest.

Donuts and Such

Posted to Reddit by u/Memphronomicon

By now you’ve likely seen the video of a group of people (armed with pistols and rifles) brashly shutting down a stretch of I-240 to do donuts. It was one of several insane Memphis events caught on camera recently, including a theft raid on a gas station, people looting a FedEx truck, and a fight at Top Golf (below).

“This why I don’t do much in the inner city part of Memphis,” u/_kylanbrown said on Reddit. “I’m 20. I wanna have fun but Memphis just ain’t the place.”

Quick PSA

“This Tuesday someone got caught crankin’ the hog at a popular local coffee shop (you can probably guess which),” u/skeleton_booger said on Reddit. “If you’re getting coffee keep an eye out for The Stroker.”

We Ate ALL of Gibson’s Donuts, Part I

The original idea was that we would eat all the donuts at Gibson’s and then rank them, but that struck us as horrible to rate all these beauties, each brilliant in its own way. And when we were told that the number of different donuts was north of 50, the task seemed undoable. I was desperate to scale back. But, Donahue was fixed on the idea of eating them all. And, so eat them all we did. We did leave you some. And, by the way, by our count, there are 35 donut varieties, which is plenty, indeed.

This is part 1.

Maple Iced – Heavy maple flavor. The no-bacon version of the Maple Bacon doughnut.

Glazed – The perfect glazed doughnut. Sweet, but not cloying. A great dunker with coffee.

Cinnamon Sugar – Softer than the Cinnamon Sugar Cake version, but still has a great cinnamon taste.

Red Velvet – Tastes like the famous cake.

Blueberry Filled – The classic jelly doughnut, but with blueberry, not strawberry filling.

Maple Bacon – Sweet and savory with the sweet maple and the salty bacon. It’s like breakfast without the pancakes.

Plain Cake with Chocolate Icing – The classic cake, but with a chocolate topping. Great, tasty combination.

Cinnamon Sugar Cake – Lots of cinnamon. Good dunker.

Caramel Cake – Doesn’t taste like a caramel cake, but still is delicious.

Powder Cake – A nostalgic, tasty taste from childhood. Don’t eat this while wearing a black shirt.

Chocolate Devil’s Food – Decadently good. Chocolate lovers will love this.

Plain Cake – Not very sweet – in a good way. Great dunker.

Donut Factory Now Open on South Main

“Well, it’s funny how this came about,” says Alele “Paul” Ayanru. “First there was the space and what best to do with the space.”

Ayanru was an electrical engineer who had gotten into real estate, he says. A chance meeting with the landlord of the building at 8 S. Main eventually led to The Donut Factory, which opened last Friday.

“I wanted to diversify,” Ayanru says. “There are three things people always need: food, clothing, and shelter.”

He knew he wanted to do food, but wasn’t sure exactly what to focus on. He began visiting restaurants around downtown.

The small space limited what he would be able to do. He considered a deli, before landing on donuts.

Ayanru says he researched what makes a good donut a good donut. The donuts so far have been cake, with lemon being a popular flavor. They may have yeast donuts as soon as this weekend.

Other breakfast items include stuffed French toast and farmer’s omelets.

The Donut Factory is open 24/7. “Well, we have to be here until midnight at least prepping for the next day,” Ayanru explains.
