Sideman to Solo

Even before his recent solo turn, journeyman Mark Edgar Stuart had earned his place as an elite Memphis musician and, perhaps, the go-to bass player in town through years of service to countless local bands. But with the release of his excellent debut album, Blues for Lou, Stuart shows that he is also a force to be reckoned with as a guitarist and singer-songwriter.

Stuart’s career in music began in his hometown of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, when his father — “Big Lou” — insisted he take up the upright bass instead of sports.

“He told me from the get-go that I would not be playing sports like he and my brother did. I was going to play music — period,” Stuart says. “He said all he and my brother had to show for their time playing sports were broken bones that still hurt.” There were also more practical reasons for his father’s demand.

“The only way he could afford to send me to college is if I stuck with that upright bass and got a scholarship,” Stuart says.

And he did stick with it and earn that scholarship — at what was then Memphis State University. Once in town, Stuart quickly fell in with a group of like-minded musicians who would eventually become known as the alt-country outfit the Pawtuckets.

“The Pawtuckets changed everything for me,” Stuart says. “One day out of the blue, I saw an ad in the Flyer for a ‘bass player wanted.’ It changed my life. Those guys wound up being my best friends to this day. Before I knew it, I was in a ‘real’ band playing ‘real’ clubs. For the first time, I felt like I was a somebody. I had an identity. I was officially a musician, a Memphis musician. My dad was proud.”

The Pawtuckets had a good run. Over the course of roughly five years, the band produced three solid albums and toured extensively. But the project lost steam by 2001.

“I thought the band was going to be my ticket, and we all know how that story goes … implosion,” Stuart says. “Being in a band for the first time with two songwriters definitely had an influence, maybe not then but 15 years later. Back then, I made fun of their sensitive heart-on-the-sleeve BS. I just wanted to rock and play bass through an [Ampeg] SVT cabinet.”

After the Pawtuckets’ demise, Stuart spent the next several years making the rounds. He toured for a year with Alvin Youngblood Hart. He recorded two albums with Cory Branan and played with Branan on Late Night with David Letterman. He played guitar in Vending Machine. He recorded and toured with the Secret Service, John Paul Keith, and Jack Oblivian. And, in 2009, he released a CD of original instrumental rock songs under the name M. Edgar S. and the Slightly Possessed.

Everything changed for Stuart, however, when he was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2010.

“I felt a bump in my chest. Four different doctors said it was heartburn or an allergy to alcohol. You have to be aggressive when diagnosing yourself. I knew something wasn’t right,” he says.

Eventually, the doctors at a local minor-medical center did get it right. Stuart began undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment almost immediately, which both opened and closed doors for him, creatively speaking.

“I stopped playing gigs for the most part,” he says. “I spent a lot of time at home bored and sick, and that’s how this whole reinvention started. I would just sit around with my acoustic guitar and finger pick. That led into trying to sing and dabbling with songwriting.”

But while Stuart’s health improved, the news in his personal life only got worse.

“Shortly after my last treatment, my dad got sick and died and then my dog,” he says. “It affected me immensely. 2011 sucked. But now I had something to write about.”

And so Stuart began to write songs and record demos at home, which he shared with musician friends along the way. At the urging of several of those friends — including Branan, Keith, Jimmy Davis, and his former Pawtuckets bandmate Mark McKinney — he started performing his new songs live.

Last year, one of Stuart’s demos found its way to local producer/engineer Jeff Powell, who encouraged him to make a full-fledged album.

“He called and left me this long inspiring message. I still have the message to this day. I won’t erase it,” Stuart says.

Stuart and Powell recorded most of the album over the course of several weekends at Ardent Studios and Powell’s home studio, but a few of Stuart’s original demos also found their way onto Blues for Lou.

“I loved the fact that Jeff encouraged me to use some of the demos,” Stuart says. “A lot of recording geeks would have insisted they be re-recorded using their fancy gadgets and toys.”

Mark Edgar Stuart’s solo debut will finally be available to the public this week, officially released by McKinney’s imprint, MADJACK Records. For his part, Stuart will perform at the Booksellers at Laurelwood on Saturday. Later that night, he will celebrate the album’s release with a show at Earnestine & Hazel’s. After that, he’ll be hitting the road in support of more established road acts like Star & Micey and (hopefully) Branan, as well as collaborating with up-and-coming singer-songwriter Kait Lawson.

But even with so much going on, thoughts of his father are never far from Stuart’s mind.

“Everything I do is for my pop. He was the man,” Stuart says.

Two annual local music-industry events will partner this weekend, as the local Recording Academy chapter’s annual “Grammy GPS: A Roadmap for Today’s Music Biz” partners with the Memphis Music Foundation’s “Plug In Memphis: Indie Music Expo.” Both events will take place at the Stax Music Academy and Museum of American Soul Music on Saturday, October 1st, with bookend showcase concerts Friday and Saturday night.

“October is Memphis Music Month, and in an effort to make this as big an event as possible, we wanted to expand,” says Jon Hornyak, senior executive director of the Memphis Grammy chapter, a regional office that covers Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and St. Louis, in addition to West Tennessee.

“I like to say this is what happens when organizations communicate,” says Music Foundation director of development and communications Pat Mitchell.

The two once-separate events have similarities: Both have been geared toward professional development information for musicians and other music-industry workers and exposure for musicians via showcase concerts. But the events are also different. Plug In is more purely local.

“Plug In was created to allow artists in Memphis to meet businesses that can help them in their careers,” Mitchell says, citing such service providers as Audiographic Masterworks and Select-O-Hits and needs ranging from T-shirts to books, to car rentals, to publicity. In this way, Plug In is an extension of the Music Foundation’s daily work at its Memphis Music Resource Center.

Grammy GPS is more focused on regional artists and industry representatives in the broader musical landscape.

“From our standpoint, [the partnership] gives us a trade-show component,” Hornyak says. “We’re doing panels, and people will be able to go back and forth. There’s good synergy there. In one afternoon, [attendees] can get a good snapshot of what’s going on locally but also a picture of what’s going on nationally and globally.”

Grammy GPS will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Stax Music Academy, featuring a variety of panels and workshops on music-industry topics, including “Pitching and Placing: Music for Film and TV,” “Direct Connect: Social Media,” and “Your Bottomline: Alternative Funding Sources.” Panelists include representatives of prominent indie labels and management companies (Sub Pop, Thirty Tigers) and recording engineers who have worked with artists such as Beyoncé (DJ Swivel) and Jay-Z (Ken “Duro” Ifill).

The keynote speaker is Daniel Glass, founder/CEO of Glassnote Entertainment Group, whose label is home to the Grammy-nominated Mumford & Sons and GPS showcase headliner Givers, among other acts.

“Mumford & Sons’ appearance at the Grammys was very significant,” Hornyak says. “They didn’t win, but they probably had the biggest bump of any act. This [event] is targeted to an indie audience, and Glassnote is one of the most successful indie labels.”

While GPS events are happening at the Stax Academy, the Plug In event will take place next door at the museum from 1 to 3:30 p.m., with an exhibit area set up within the museum and an “experts lounge” that will allow visitors to get 20-minute one-on-one consultations with industry insiders involved in areas such as management, licensing, publishing, radio, and touring/booking.

The Plug In event is free. GPS is free for Recording Academy members. Conference admission for nonmembers is $35.

The two showcase concerts will feature emerging acts from around the region governed by the local Recording Academy chapter. Friday headliner Givers are a five-piece indie-rock/pop band from Lafayette, Louisiana. They signed with Glassnote early this year and released their debut album, In Light, this summer.

The band is something of a spiritual cousin to indie bands such as Yeasayer, Vampire Weekend, and the Dirty Projectors. Like those bands, Givers deploy African-derived (and, in their case, Cajun/zydeco-derived) sounds — polyrhythmic percussion, clean, spry guitar lines, open-hearted vocals — in a style all their own. And they share elements with their artier Yankee counterparts: subtle psychedelia (Yeasayer), propulsion (Vampire Weekend), gender interplay (Dirty Projectors). The latter comes from the shared vocals of guitarist Taylor Guarisco and second drummer Tiffany Lamson. The result is a furry, friendly, Southern-jam-band take on Afropop-schooled indie, captured on singles like the buoyant “Up, Up, Up” and the gnarlier “Meantime.”

Givers will be joined at the Hi-Tone Friday night by Memphis rapper Cities Aviv, who has been getting loads of great — and greatly deserved — national indie press of late, and rockers Kruxe, along with Jackson, Tennessee, country-rockers GR Robinson.

At the closing showcase at Earnestine & Hazel’s Saturday night, acts will include Memphis rapper Skewby, who played last year’s Grammy GPS event, and New Orleans singer-songwriter Alexis Marceaux. Uniting Memphis and Louisiana will be Fille Catatonique, the musical moniker of singer-songwriter Marcella René Simien, a Louisiana native who relocated to Memphis a couple of years ago and is featured on Cities Aviv’s debut album, Digital Lows.

Let It Bleed

Earlier this year, local songwriter Harlan T. Bobo released Sucker, a gem of an album that tracks the genesis and evolution of a relationship. A few months later, Rob Jungklas — perhaps Bobo’s chief rival as sharpest lyricist on the local rock/roots scene — is releasing something of an unintentional companion piece, Mapping the Wreckage, a powerful yet intimate album that tracks the deterioration and aftermath of a relationship.

Jungklas was weaned on the city’s folk/blues scene in the 1970s, but he made his mark in the late ’80s as a would-be pop/rock star, scoring a minor MTV hit in 1987 with the single “Boys Town,” then releasing his 1989 album Work Songs for a New Moon on major-label RCA.

“In the ’80s, I was a pop musician and proud of it. That’s what I did. I had my deals and my 15 minutes,” Jungklas says. “But in my mind, I’m really a blues artist … folk and blues. People might roll their eyes when I say that. But in my head, that’s what it is.”

Music took a back seat for Jungklas in the ’90s, a period spent getting married and getting his teaching certificate (he’s currently a seventh-grade science teacher at a local private school), but he kept writing and recording, putting out a couple of self-released albums.

In 2002, he partnered with the local MADJACK label and producer Jeff Powell for a return of sorts, Arkadelphia, an album that came across as something of a personal tour of Delta mythology (including the eternal title “Drunk Like Son House”). This was followed by 2007’s Gully, a rattled, atmospheric, bluesy roots-rock record filled with dark scenarios.

“What I’m doing now is, hopefully, accessible,” Jungklas says, “but it certainly isn’t pop music.”

On Mapping the Wreckage, the dissonant art-blues sound and piercing lyrics full of Southern Gothic and biblical imagery that Jungklas established on Arkadelphia and Gully are directed toward more personal material.

“I can’t say it any better or any other way than I did on this record,” says Jungklas, avoiding specifics. “Something that is as personal as this could only be approached, in my case, in poetry and song. This is my conversation about a period in my life — with friends, with lovers, with people who care about me. I got as deep into it as I could.”

Mapping the Wreckage, as the title indicates, is structured like a journey. The searing opening stretch knocks you down: “Can’t Heal Up” staggers with carnal admissions and self-lacerating pain (“Don’t you stitch me up,” Jungklas howls. “Better off to bleed”). “Detox” is a “love is a drug” metaphor delivered with locomotive intensity. “Baby, it’s your strung-out little darling/Dying on your answering machine,” Jungklas announces at the outset, before ultimately letting a screaming Steve Selvidge guitar solo take the song places words can’t go. “Pleasure of the Curve” swaggers with an almost mischievous musical confidence. “Around my neck I wear a heart of glass/As a memento mori/Nothing lasts,” Jungklas cracks, en route to questioning, “Do you want my heart?/Do you have the nerve?”

But the closing stretch — “A Girl Named Resurrection,” “The Horse Knows the Way,” and, finally, “Transfiguration” — picks you back up, with a peacefulness and acceptance (Jonathan Kirkscey’s beautiful cello work figures prominently on the final two tracks) that has added power precisely because of the darkness that precedes it.

Jungklas says people often ask him about that darkness in his music, but he demurs. “By talking to your demons … there’s a power in that confrontation that overrides the darkness and pushes on through to something else,” he says. Mapping the Wreckage embodies this notion.

The album was actually recorded two years ago, in August 2008, not long after Gully was released.

“He came to us and said, ‘I need to make this record now. I don’t care how long it takes to come out,'” Powell remembers.

“Therapy’s not the right word, but it was something I needed to do then,” Jungklas says. “It wasn’t something I could wait six months to do.”

In order to capture the power and immediacy of Jungklas’ songs, Powell proposed a bold, unusual recording process, gathering musicians who had Jungklas’ trust (in addition to Selvidge and Kirkscey, drummers Robert Barnett and Harry Peel, guitarist John Whittemore, and bassist Sam Shoup play on the record), with very little preparation.

“We went into Ardent. We got everybody on the floor, all in one big room,” Jungklas remembers. “I’d run the song once, and then we’d go. Let it bleed — sonically there’s a lot of bleed. But emotionally it was the perfect way to jump in. You can hear people — and feel people — trying to carve out their place in the track, reacting off me and reacting off each other. And, of course, all these players are adept enough to pull that off.”

“This is the great thing about Memphis,” says Powell, who produced, engineered, and mixed the record.

“Rob would play it through once, and everyone had a little legal pad to jot down [charts] — intro, verse, chorus, whatever. At one point, I looked at Steve [Selvidge’s] note pad, and it had a picture of a cow or something. He didn’t even write down the chords. These guys were just listening to each other.”

Long synonymous with Italian dining in Memphis, Ronnie Grisanti’s

family’s authentic Tuscan cuisine, which has delighted local diners for
generations. Most of the restaurant’s staff — including Ronnie
himself — will relocate to the family’s Germantown location,

so we’ll oblige: A “cougar” is an older woman who prefers the company of younger men.

At first glance, one might wonder why Memphians picked Yia Yia’s as their favorite Mediterranean restaurant. But despite some American main courses, Yia Yia’s menu is inspired by the cuisines of Italy, Spain, Greece, and France. It’s a place where you can have perfect gnocchi with your Cobb salad or nosh on duck confit with polenta while waiting for your flank steak.
