MEMernet: Memphis Redbirds, Board to Beers, and ‘Slideshow’

Memphis on the internet.

Memphis Redbirds

The Memphis Redbirds teased on Facebook last weekend that “something big is coming.” The post’s image had big, vague shadows cast on the field. Guesses in the comments included a Cardinals game here in March, Deck the Diamond, aliens, price increases, a winning season, and more.

Board to Beers

Posted to GoFundMe by board to Beers

The MEMernet — like the internet everywhere — got a little tense last week. Board game bar Board to Beers launched a GoFundMe to move into a new space in Poplar Plaza. The owners said three air-conditioning units ($10,000 each, the owners said) have been stolen and replaced by them at their Chickasaw Crossing location.

Some Memphis subreddit users blasted the move, like u/memphisthrowaway9876 who said, “Make more money or realize your business model isn’t working out.” On Facebook, owners cast shame on “hateful” comments and asked, “What have you done for your city?”

901 Comics Hosts P&H Fundraiser Saturday

More than babies are born after a few beers at the P&H Cafe. Sometimes two drunk guys mutually consent to the birth of a comic book store.

“I worked at the P&H Cafe for six or seven years,” says Jaime Wright, co-owner of 901 Comics. “Shannon and I conceived 901 Comics on a few bar napkins over more than a few beers.”

Wright’s business partner Shannon Merritt also owns 901 Games with his wife Erin. According to Wright, Merritt opened a lot of doors for him, including a job working with Stan Lee. The P&H Cafe is a very important part of their lives. When they heard the news, they had to help.

Facebook/The P&H Cafe

The secret origins of 901 Comics have their roots in the P&H Cafe.

The P&H GoFundMe page states, “Due to some inconvenient and unforeseen circumstances, the P&H Cafe is unfortunately having to move to a different location.”

The new location is thus far undisclosed; rumor has it that the Crosstown area might be the lucky location to welcome the beloved dive bar. Wherever it moves, it’s going to cost a lot of money. In addition to the GoFundMe, a benefit is planned for this Saturday. Twenty percent of all 901 Comics sales will be donated to the cause. Enter to win a Stan Lee signed comic book, participate in auctions, and enjoy live music at the Cooper-Young Gazebo featuring Switchblade Kid. This is a socially distanced benefit. Cosplay attire is encouraged.

Wear your superhero mask.

A Benefit for the P&H Cafe, 901 Comics, 2162 Young, Saturday, Dec. 5, noon-6 p.m., free.

Comedian Benny Elbows Recovering After Shooting

The very tall Mr. B. Elbows steps over a fence. From a Memphis Flyer cover story about Memphis Comedy.

“Instead of dick picks, send supportive messages without any expectation that it will lead to sex,” Memphis comedian Ben Fredrick aka Benny Elbows says in a Facebook post. It sounds like somebody is on the road to recovery.

Fredrick was shot during a carjacking attempt and the bullet lodged in his liver. “Currently, I’m in no pain and on no pain medication. Thank you to everyone who has reached out or visited,” he wrote in a separate post.

Fredrick performs with The Bluff City Liars and was recently instrumental in bringing Kids in the Hall co-founder Kevin McDonald to Memphis for workshops and a show.

A Gofundme page has been set up to help defray medical expenses.
