Dr. Erin Schauss, who oversees the Brain Center at the University of Memphis, was awarded a grant from the Urban Child Institute to help children affected by COVID-19. But Schauss says the services offered are not just for those affected by COVID-19.

“COVID impacts different people, differently. It could be someone who lost both parents in a car accident or the victim of a gunshot wound,” said Schauss.

The pandemic has brought about new challenges to the city. With city and county schools being virtual, many children are cut off from the valuable mental health services offered through the school counselors and teachers. This program is another avenue for children who need the added emotional support.

The grant is slated to begin January 4, 2021, and will offer free behavioral health therapy to patients being seen at Le Bonheur.

Schauss’ entire career has been devoted to helping everyone overcome their mental health challenges.

“At the U of M, our work is focused on resilience. The neuroplasticity of the brain is amazing. You’ve got your genes and you’ve got your experiences,” Schauss said. “The more we can intervene for somebody who may be having slight symptoms earlier in life, the longer the longevity of their mental health.”

Ophelia Ford in Hospital; May Miss Start of Legislative Session

AP – State senator Ophelia Ford is still in the hospital and a family member says it’s not certain she will be able to attend when the Legislature goes into session next week.

Her brother Joe Ford tells The Associated Press that the senator has been treated for about a month at Methodist Hospital in Memphis. He is declining to provide details on her illness, calling it a “private matter.”

He says Ophelia Ford is receiving physical rehabilitation to improve the movement of her joints and limbs.

As for whether his sister, a Democrat, will be well enough to attend Tuesday’s opening session of the state Senate, Joe Ford says he has “no idea.”

Access Hollywood is reporting that Actress Kate Beckinsale was treated at a Memphis-area hospital over the weekend:

The British beauty went to the hospital on Sunday afternoon after experiencing numbness in her left arm and left leg, a source revealed to Access.

The source said the actress was concerned after experiencing the numbness for a couple of days. However, she was reportedly not in any pain.

Doctors treated Beckinsale and determined the problem was due to exhaustion and that she hadn’t been compliant with her regular medication, the source added.

When contacted by Access, a rep for Beckinsale said the reason the actress had gone to the hospital was to accompany her assistant who sprained her ankle.

Beckinsale is currently in Memphis shooting the drama Nothing But The Truth, with Matt Dillon and David Schwimmer.
