Music Video Monday: “Simple Song of Freedom” by Memphis Freedom Band

It’s been a tough few years for the cause of peace. The Russian invasion of Ukraine just hit its two-year anniversary, with no end in sight. After the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, Israel responded with the most deadly military operation of the 21st century, which has devolved into a quagmire of violence and famine in Gaza, where two million people face hunger in a bombed-out landscape that used to be their home.

These high-profile conflicts have drawn attention from Sudan, where a civil war has displaced eight million people, and millions more are entering into famine while both sides try to starve the other one out. Meanwhile, in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti is slipping into warlordism as Port Au Prince gangs conduct running battles with what’s left of the government. It’s enough to drive you to despair if you’re paying attention.

The antidote to despair is music. Italian (by way of Memphis) musician Mario Monterosso organized the Memphis Freedom Band to put out a message of peace. Last December, he invited a who’s who of Memphis musicians to record with producer Scott Bomar at Sam Phillips Recording, including Kallen Esperian, Rev. Charles Hodges, Dr. Gary Beard, Dr. Keith Norman of First Baptist Church Broad, The Bar-Kays’ Larry Dodson, Priscilla Presley, and a rare appearance by the queen of Memphis soul Carla Thomas. Filmmaker Billie Worley was on hand with a camera to capture the historic moment in the studio, as the big band sang “Simple Song of Freedom,” a 1969 hit by Bobbi Darin.

“Since the middle of the 20th century, Memphis music has been the strongest musical bridge across the world,” says Monterosso. “And now we come together in solidarity as one voice to create a bridge of hope and freedom for the people and children of Ukraine and all those countries hit by wars.”

Indie Memphis Announces First Crop of Movies for 2016 Festival

A documentary about a controversial chapter of Memphis history, a coming-of-age drama by one of Memphis’ favorite sons and a look back at a seminal Bluff City work by Hollywood’s hottest writer will be the centerpieces of the 2016 Indie Memphis Film Festival. 

Indie Memphis released this video today to reveal the first crop of the160 films that will screen at the weeklong festival in November.

The Invaders

The opening night film will be The Invaders, a documentary by director Prichard Smith, writer J. B. Horrell (who is better known as the Memphis musician behind Ex-Cult and Aquarian Blood), and executive producer Craig Brewer. The film traces the history of Memphis’ indigenous black power group of the 1960s, The Invaders. Contemporaries of the Black Panthers, The Invaders became infamous during the aftermath of the 1968 Sanitation Workers Strike. The film tells the story from their perspective, shedding new light on the events leading up to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (Full disclosure: This columnist consulted on the film) 

Little Men

Director Ira Sachs, a Memphis native who lives in New York City, has been garnering acclaim for his new film Little Men, which will premiere at Indie Memphis before beginning its run at the Malco Ridgeway. Sachs, who recently had a retrospective of his work at the Museum of Modern Art, will be on hand to introduce the film and answer questions from the audience. 

Free In Deed

Director Jake Mahaffy’s Free In Deed, shot in Memphis in 2014, is based on a true life story of faith healing gone wrong. It premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival and has garnered international acclaim from Europe to Australia. 

The People vs. Larry Flynt

20 years ago this summer, The People vs. Larry Flynt shot here in Memphis. Directed by Milos Foreman, the film was the brainchild of screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who scored this year’s biggest television hit with The People vs. OJ Simpson. Karaszewski will return to Memphis for the twentieth anniversary screening of his epic tale of the Hustler publisher’s visit to the Supreme Court. 

Kallen Esperian: Vissi d’arté

The closing night of the festival will be director Steve Ross’ locally produced documentary profile of the Memphis opera singer Kallen Esperian: Vissi d’arte’. The film premiered with a pair of sold-out shows earlier this year, and the closing night gala will give more Memphians an opportunity to see this remarkable work. 

This year’s festival, sponsored by Duncan Williams runs from November 1-7. Tickets are now on sale at the Indie Memphis web site

Kallen Esperian Sings Led Zeppelin

Memphis’ own operatic diva singing a Led Zeppelin classic? Yep, it’s “The Immigrant Song,” and you can hear it for yourself on
her latest CD. And you can read why she’s stretching her repertoire, in BostonNOW’s latest edition.

Kallen Esperian grew up hearing her mother play Nat King Cole, and in high school she loved musical theater. “I’d never been to the opera, but somehow I had an operatic voice,” says Esperian, who has performed on the world’s great stages with stars like the late Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo.

Recently the sound engineer of her Christmas CD came up with a list of songs — classics, jazz, and rock — that he thought would fit her voice and style.

Sing It

On Saturday, November 25th, Kallen Esperian will perform at The Orpheum in honor of the theater’s 79th birthday. The concert is titled “Kallen Steps Out,” and, indeed, Esperian will step beyond the opera songs that made her famous. While Esperian will perform works from such operas as La Bohème and Madame Butterfly, most of the tunes she’ll be wrapping her powerful pipes around fall outside the genre. She’ll be taking on sultry torch songs (“Stormy Weather”), power ballads (“My Heart Will Go On”), bouncy movie tunes (“Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”), rock (“We Are the Champions”), and more.

It’s no secret that Esperian enjoys performing different types of music. In addition to her opera recordings, she’s released solo records of Christmas tunes, folk songs, and American standards. The Orpheum concert only reiterates two facts about Esperian: 1) She’s a generous booster of her hometown, and 2) the lady’s got range.
