Grizzlies Drop 5th-Straight Game to End Road Trip

The Grizzlies finished a five-game, season-long road trip winless, after losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday by a score of 111-100.

Yes, Memphis has lost five straight games after going on an 11-game win streak to begin the year.  The road has not been kind for the Grizzlies as the team is 11-15 this season. However, there’s no place like home. Memphis has one of the best home records in the league at 20-3.

Desmond Bane (right knee pain) and Steven Adams were absent for the Grizzlies on Friday (right knee PCL sprain). John Konchar also is in concussion protocol. With 27 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists, Ja Morant led the Grizzlies, and notched his fourth season triple-double and eighth of his career.

On the season, Morant is averaging 27.3 points, 8.1 assists and 5.6 rebounds and will surely be selected as an All-Star reserve by NBA head coaches.

To round off the scoring, Dillon Brooks finished with 17 points, Brandon Clarke added 15 points, seven rebounds, and three steals, and Jaren Jackson Jr. ended with 14 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.

The Timberwolves’ Kyle Anderson finished with a season-high 23 points and six assists, including a season-high four 3-pointers in the win against his former team.

Deficiencies

Free-throw shooting reared its ugly head in losses in the losing streak. The team only shot 80 percent or above in two of the five games. The worst outcome was going 26 of 40 against the Los Angeles Lakers and losing 122-121.

Memphis shot 26 of 37 against the Golden State Warriors and lost by 2 points, 122-120. This has become a problem that has cost the team regular season games and if not corrected will haunt them come playoff time.

Memphis tragedy

Prior to the game, a moment of silence was held for Tyre Nichols, who was fatally beaten by Memphis police officers earlier this month. Both the Grizzlies and the Timberwolves issued statements prior to the release of the disturbing videos on the deadly encounter.

Jackson Jr. shared his thoughts on Twitter prior to the game.

After the game Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins spoke to the media:

There’s way harder things on in the city versus what’s going on with our basketball right now. I’m proud of our guys going out there. We’re playing with heavy hearts, but we’re also playing for our city that’s going through a lot right now.My words will only mean so much. I want to continue to encourage people to put their arms around each other. To put their arms around the Nichols family, the Wells family to remember a beautiful life in Tyre Nichols – who I did not know, but I’m learning about.”

The team’s locker room was closed on Friday after the game and players were not made available to speak with the media. #JusticeForTyre

Grizzlies Topple Lakers 104-99

Wednesday night your Memphis Grizzlies faced off against the Los Angeles Lakers. After struggling in the first half, the Grizzlies were able to cut into the lead the Lakers had built, and then a blend of good offense and defense in the fourth quarter helped guide the Grizzlies to a win.

A familiar face was on the sidelines for the opposing team. Lakers assistant coach (and former Grizzlies head coach) David Fizdale assumed head coaching duties this game as head coach Frank Vogel was in league health and safety protocols.

The Lakers have a roster full of recognizable names, players who have proven themselves on other teams. LeBron James, obviously, plus Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, and Avery Bradley. But for the amount of collective basketball ability the Lakers possess, they have had some very forgettable performances this season.

The Grizzlies on the other hand? We are all watching this young team grow into its own in real-time.

By the Numbers:

Ja Morant continues to lead the way for the Grizzlies and has largely returned to his earlier season form. Morant leads all scorers with 41 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks.

Desmond Bane continues to shine, and he finished the night with 20 points, four rebounds, and two assists.

Only one other Grizzlies player scored in double figures — Jaren Jackson Jr. closed out with 15 points, four rebounds, three steals, and a block.

Kyle Anderson finished with 8 points, four rebounds, and two assists, and Xavier Tillman Sr. led the bench unit with 6 points, two steals, and a block.

Who Got Next?

The Grizzlies will play their last game of the year against the San Antonio Spurs Friday night at FedExForum. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.

Jones and Morant Lead Grizzlies Past Nuggets

This was the best performance by the Grizzlies’ bench all season, led by Tyus Jones (17 points), Xavier Tillman (12 points), and Kyle Anderson (nine points) as the Grizzlies’ bench exploded for 43 points.

Tillman was pleased with the second unit’s big night performance. He said, “It was huge. Especially since the Miami game. It felt like the bench was nonexistent, there were times in that game when they went on an even bigger run with us in there. For us to bounce back in today’s game and actually go on runs ourselves and set the tone was huge.”

Tillman also praised Jones for his work on the floor. He added, “Even when his shots aren’t falling he knows where everyone is supposed to be. He knows what the defense is going to do on a specific play, so he’s able to put guys in the right position. Tonight was special because we talk about being ready to shoot at all times, and today he showed that for sure.”

Along with his season-high in points, Jones also had eight rebounds, five assists, two steals, and shot 5 of 7 from beyond the arc to round out his performance as the Grizzlies defeated the Nuggets 106-97. The 25-year-old back-up guard made the most of his extended minutes.

Having Jones and Morant share the court for so long was a gamble that paid off handsomely for Memphis.

It became clear during Taylor Jenkins’ postgame news conference why he decided to give Jones and Ja Morant more playing time together. He elaborated as follows: “I think it’s a combination of things. It’s something I definitely want to try. I want to see what those two guys can do together. It’s having more creators on the floor. It puts Ja in different positions, puts Tyus in different positions.

Jenkins added, “Obviously, he shot the heck out of the ball tonight, that being Tyus. Also, just getting a feel for the game. I wanted to explore lineups with them together. He was playing great, giving us a boost on the offensive end, did some good things competitive on the ball defensively with a hot hand. He had a great game and it paid off for us.”

Jones appreciates having more time on the court with Morant. He said, “Me and 12 [Morant] talk about that all the time. I’m glad it happened tonight. We love it because it allows us to play fast and, having two point guards on the court who pride themselves on having a high basketball IQ, we try to make it easier for everyone else. It allows me to take some pressure off Ja and giving him different looks on that side of the floor. We love it and it worked for us tonight.”

For the past three years, Morant said he and Jones had discussed the possibility of playing together more often. He explained, “I definitely love it. I feel like we play with a way better pace — I don’t have to be on the ball. With Tyus  being such a good creator on the floor for everybody and also himself allowed me to just sit back so pretty much just getting stops, getting out and run, having another ball handler out there to be able to go into actions if teams try to take me away.”

According to Morant, he and Jones are pass first point guards of the same pedigree. Morant added, “We both got a little switch we can turn off; tonight showed he’s capable of scoring the ball as well and as long as he continues to shoot it and force the defense to lock in on him more and it opens it up for everybody else. That’s how I look at it when I attack the game. As of late he’s been doing the same thing, shooting the ball really well — so you got to keep him aggressive and comfortable when he’s out there.”

Tidbits

With his first assist of the game, Morant surpassed the 1,000-assist mark for his career. The third year guard is in good company.

Only Oscar Robertson, Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Damon Stoudamire, and Trae Young have scored more than 2,500 points and dished out more than 1,000 assists faster than Ja Morant (137 games).

While on the subject of Morant, his early-season MVP performances continue to astound the NBA basketball world.

The 22-year-old finished the game with a near triple double of 26 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds.

Anderson also reached the milestone of 1,000 career assists during the game.

Ja Morant’s Career Night Wasn’t Enough to Hold off the Jazz

Ja Morant left it all on the floor after playing 43 minutes along with the entire second half against the Utah Jazz.

Morant’s performance on Wednesday night was nothing but spectacular. However, the 21-year-old isn’t satisfied with his record-breaking night after falling in Game 2 to the Jazz, 141-129.

He finished with 47 points on an incredibly efficient 15 of 26 from the field plus 15 of 20 from the charity stripe.

“It’s an honor to be able to do that. I’m blessed to be in the position that I’m in, be able to play the game at the highest level,” Morant said during the postgame media availability. “But that’s not on my mind at all. We lost, so obviously it wasn’t enough.”

Morant is getting whatever shot he wants as he drives through the lane off the dribble. The Jazz simply have no answer for Morant at this point.

Even though the Murray State alum wasn’t just satisfied with his elite performance, his teammates took notice. “I looked up and I saw he had 47!’” said forward Kyle Anderson after the Game 2 loss. “I was like, ‘Wow!’ That’s big time — we kind of knew the player he was, and we knew he’s highly capable of it. He’s just putting you guys on notice now. You guys are getting to see it.”

After the game Jaren Jackson Jr. was proud of Morant’s playing. I’m happy for him,” Jackson proclaimed. “That’s a good feeling, something he’s going to remember forever.”

Not only will Morant remember, but the entire NBA will never forget his coming out party on the big stage. The second year guard is in elite company.

“It’s obviously an amazing feat in his early career,” said Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins. “But I know all he will talk about is how he can’t wait to come back and get a win. That’s his focus. He’s all driven to win.”

Donovan Mitchell had to give Morant his props. “Honestly, it’s not that surprising,” Mitchell said. “He’s a gamer. He goes out there and competes — tonight, he was aggressive from the jump. At a young age, for him to be able to have that is definitely special. That’s something that I respect about him and about his game. He doesn’t quit.”

The old saying goes, “There’s no quit in the Grit.”

The Jazz evened the series but the night belonged to Morant who elevated his status as a bonafide superstar in Memphis who will back down to no one.

Grizzlies fans, the team’s future is bright with Morant as the cornerstone.

Run It Back

The series shifts to Memphis at the Grindhouse where towels will be waving from more that 10,000 fans as the capacity increased to 55 percent.

Memphis has a chance to go up 2-1 on Saturday night. Tip-off is at 8:30 p.m. CT.

Grizzlies Maul Hawks 131-113 in Epic Win

The Grizzlies dominated the Atlanta Hawks behind the power of an unlikely hero. Let’s talk about it.

Pretend this eagle is a hawk. Thank me later.

This victory over Atlanta was a group effort. The Grizzlies starting lineup combined for 101 of 131 total points scored. Every player in the starting five scored in double digits and they played some of their best basketball of the season.

Is Grayson Allen the greatest heel in Memphis basketball history?

Grayson Allen popped off for a career-high 30 points against Atlanta, showing perhaps that he takes the matchup between him and Trae Young to heart.

By the Numbers

Grayson Allen – 30 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists, on 10 of 18 shooting and zero turnovers. Clearly, he remembered the previous meeting with the Hawks and that dustup with Trae Young, Atlanta’s budding star point guard. (There was some chatter via Twitter, it was a whole thing. )

Allen’s career night in the rematch was a masterful performance as he embraces the heel role. Memphis AF, y’all.

Dillon Brooks – 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting, including 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. The Villian continues to frustrate opponents on both ends of the floor.

Ja Morant – 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. Ja Morant continues to awe and amaze with his incredible court vision and high basketball IQ.

Morant sees the court in a way that us mere mortals do not, and this is evident watching him play.

When Morant isn’t contributing on the offensive end, he’s still using his skills to set up opportunities for his teammates. Feed him, and everybody eats. It is one of the many reasons why he’s the perfect leader for this franchise – you can always count on 12 to give you something.

Jonas Valanciunas – 19 points, 11 rebound, and 4 assists. JV now holds the title of player with the most consecutive double-double games in Memphis Grizzlies history, surpassing hometown favorite Zach Randolph.

Kyle Anderson – 16 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. Can we talk about Kyle Anderson and how freaking valuable he has been this season? I don’t know who needs to hear it but Anderson has been a top-3 player for the Grizzlies this season. He’s criminally underrated this year, and his impact on the team’s success deserves some recognition.

Paging NBA Top Shot:

This sequence involving Kyle Anderson and Ja Morant and the after celebration is the perfect distillation of a new era of Grizzlies basketball – flashier than grit and grind and at least as much fun. For best results, watch this on repeat.

So good there’s already a remix on the TL:

Who Got Next?

Closing out a four-game road trip, the Grizzlies will be visiting the World’s Most Famous Arena Friday night to face the New York Knicks. Note the earlier than usual start – tip-off is at 6:30 p.m. CST.

Dillon Brooks Helps Grizzlies Cool the Heat

The Grizzlies had a remarkable offensive night on Tuesday against a stingy Heat defense, shooting 55 percent from the field and 42 percent (17-41) from the 3-point line.

In the 124-112 road win over Miami, Memphis recorded 30 assists. The Grizzlies are now 14-1 this season when dishing out 30 or more assists. Memphis took the season series 2-0 against Miami, with both victories ending a Heat win streak.

Dillon Brooks scored 23 of his 28 points in the third quarter. It is the second-highest single-quarter scoring output in franchise history behind Jaren Jackson Jr.’s 26-point 3rd quarter against the Milwaukee Bucks on December 13th, 2019.

Brooks had called out his former teammate Andre Iguodala, who didn’t want to play for the Grizzlies, before he was eventually traded to the Miami Heat last season. Before the trade, Brooks said, “I can’t wait until we find a way to trade him so we can play him and show him what Memphis is really about.” On Tuesday night, Brooks did just that.

Jonas Valanciunas added 20 points and 10 rebounds to register his 35th double-double of the season. He also extended his double-figure rebounding streak to 17.

Kyle Anderson added 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists as the Grizzlies improved to 25-23 on the season after their third straight victory.

In the absence of De’Anthony Melton, Brandon Clarke, and Justise Winslow, Desmond Bane (15), and Xavier Tillman, Sr. (11) provided a spark off the Grizzlies bench.

Jimmy Butler put up 28 points to lead the Heat, while Bam Adebayo finished his second triple-double of the season and fifth of his career with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. The Heat fell to 26-25 on the season.

Jazz Give Memphis the Blues

Quick dribbles on the Grizzlies’ 110-126 loss to the Utah Jazz on Saturday.

1) Donovan Mitchell was aggressive from the start. He finished with 35 points and seven assists off of 12 of 17 shooting.

2) Utah held Memphis to 40 percent from the field and 27 percent from three. Meanwhile, the Jazz shot 50 percent from the field and connected on 19 three-pointers at 42 percent.

3) Kyle Anderson led the Grizzlies with 16 points off of 6 of 12 shooting, and added four assists and two steals.

4) Jonas Valanciunas tallied his 30th double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Grizzlies dropped a game under .500 at 21-22 on the season.

5) Jordan Clarkson continues to make his case for Sixth Man of the Year. As a reserve, the Missouri alum finished with 28 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Jazz.

6) Ja Morant couldn’t capitalize after his 32 points and 11 assists on Friday night against the Jazz. On Saturday, Utah kept Morant in check most of the night. He ended with only 12 points and four assists.

7) With the win Utah moved to 34-11 on the season to maintain the league’s best record. The Jazz have won 19 consecutive home games.

8) Morant is still a human highlight reel. This dunking was jaw dropping.

9) The Grizzlies will head to Houston to face the Rockets on Monday inside the Toyota Center at 7pm CT.

Grizzlies Shut Down Pistons 109-95

It might be cold in Memphis, but the Grizzlies are currently on a hot streak. Friday night’s win over Detroit gives them their first consecutive victories since the seven-game winning streak back in early January.

One thing the Grizzlies have been struggling with lately is outside shooting, and Friday night was no exception, with Memphis closing out the night just 5 of 20 from three-point range.  This is less than ideal, to say the least. On the flip side, it has been a good inside game which has helped carry the Grizzlies to recent victory.

They Go Hard in the Paint

Memphis outscored Detroit 66-38 in points in the paint and has outscored its opponents 118-62 inside during this two-game winning streak (52-24 in Wednesday’s victory over Oklahoma City).

Scoring inside and scoring off turnovers are two things that this Grizzlies team is doing extremely well this season. Per NBA.com, the Grizzlies lead the league in points scored off turnovers and are second in percentage of points scored in the paint.

Interestingly, the Grizzlies shoot one of the lowest percentages of free throws in the league, despite being near the top in paint scoring. Friday night against the Pistons was a rare instance where the Grizzlies shot more free throws than their opponent.

Ja Morant – Point God

Ja Morant was the leading scorer for the Grizzlies with 29 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists, including 9 of 10 from the free throw line.

Kyle Anderson continues being whatever is needed for Memphis and finished the night with 16 points and 6 rebounds, on 2 of 2 three-point attempts and 4 of 4 from the free throw line.

De’Anthony Melton and Desmond Bane both returned to action for the Grizzlies after missing the past several games. The pair combined for 15 of 31 points off the bench.

Morant had a few things to say after the game:

On attacking the basket and setting season highs for free throws made and attempted (9-10 FT):

“That was just me reading the defense. I feel like we are having guys knock down shots now so teams have to choose what they want to give up when they are guarding us. I feel like tonight there weren’t as many shifts so I was able to get downhill and in that midrange area and just shot my floaters.”

On having Desmond Bane and De’Anthony Melton back in the lineup:

“We are happy to have both of those guys back. They bring a lot to this team defensively and offensively. Being able to guard multiple positions and being able to make plays on the other end and knock down shots. It just opens up the floor for us and like I said the other team has to make a decision on what they want to give up. Having those guys out there, there’s not much room you can give them or it will result in a three. Two special talents and two special guys who mean a lot to this team. We are just going to continue to work and push as a unit.”

The Grizzlies will close out this four-game homestand tonight against the Phoenix Suns. Tip-off is at 8 PM CST.

Grizzlies Outlast Thunder

On a snowy Wednesday night in Memphis, the Grizzlies defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 122–113. Both teams played on the second night of a back-to-back. After losing to the New Orleans Pelicans 144–113 at home on Tuesday, Memphis fought its way to victory against a Thunder team that wouldn’t give up easily. The Thunder were coming off a disappointing loss to the Portland Trailblazers, 115–104, on Tuesday night.

Grayson Allen led the Grizzlies with 22 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while shooting 60 percent from the three-point stripe (6–10). Allen gave the team a big boost with 14 points in the fourth quarter, to help Memphis improve to 12-12 on the season.

Grizzlies Outlast Thunder (3)

Jonas Valanciunas also finished with 22 points, and added 12 rebounds, to tally his 13th double-double of the season. Wednesday night was the fifth time this season Valanciunas had at least 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Grizzlies Outlast Thunder (5)

Kyle Anderson added 20 points, five rebounds, five assists, and five steals to finish the night. Coach Taylor Jenkins was appreciative and complimentary of Anderson’s growth this season. By collecting five steals at the half, Anderson became the first Grizzlies player to hit that mark since Tony Allen, who had five against the Golden State Warriors on January 23, 2012.

Jenkins said after the win, “KA [Kyle Anderson] is playing great and has found a lot of consistency this season. He dropped 20 points and had five assists, with versatility on the defensive end. We just want to put in that effort every single night. That is just great from Kyle. He has been having a heck of a season so far. It’s been a big factor for us this season. So hopefully, he continues to do that and find ways to get better. That is the number one goal for each of our guys and our team.”

Grizzlies Outlast Thunder (2)

Grizzlies Outlast Thunder (6)

Anderson remains confident: “Just being healthy and shooting with a lot of confidence. These last 18 to 24 months, I’ve put a lot of tedious, hard work into shooting the ball. I just remember long days and nights in the gym not shooting past 15 feet for two hours. You know, it’s just paying off finally. Just getting back to where I feel like I used to be with my shot and having the confidence.”

Ja Morant recorded his first triple-double of the season with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists. “I feel like we are playing pretty good basketball,” Morant said after the game. “We still have some areas we can get better at, but to have six guys in double figures is big-time for us. It just shows that we have plenty of guys who can make plays.”

Grizzlies Outlast Thunder (4)

Morant discussed finding his teammates and accountability, “For me, it’s just studying film and talking with my teammates,” he said. “I tell them to always hold me accountable if they are open. If I miss them, I told them to curse me out.”

“By watching the film with Coach [Jenkins] and talking with Coach [Jenkins], Morant continued. Normally when I come off of a ball screen, the defender is sitting at the nail, so it’s a quick pass. Guys are knocking down shots. Once they do that, the help leaves, and it opens up the rest of the floor for us to get downhill.”

Anderson talked about playing with Morant: “Ja makes the game easier for a lot of people when he’s aggressive whether it’s scoring the ball or sharing to setting us up with easy shots. He makes it really easier for us out there.”

Grizzlies Outlast Thunder

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led his team with 22 points and six assists as the Thunder fell to 11–17 on the season. Mike Muscala chipped in 21 points while going 5-of-9 from three as a reserve.

Barrage Of Threes Helps Grizzlies Maul Hornets

Wednesday night, the Memphis Grizzlies wanted to avoid a five-game losing streak. A franchise-record shooting night with 23 three-pointers sealed the deal, as the Grizzlies defeated the Charlotte Hornets 130–114 at FedEx Forum. Memphis improves to 10-10 on the season.

Kyle Anderson led the Grizzlies with 27 points while hitting a career high 6 of 8 from the three-point stripe. Anderson spoke about his massive third quarter. He said, “I think I had knocked down a corner three in the first half, and it just felt good. So, it came to me about four or five times in a row again in the second half, just how their defense was guarding pick-and-roll.

“Teams have been getting away with that lately, being up on Ja (Morant) and making him get it out of his hands,” Anderson continued. “So I knew after these last few games that today I’ve got to just be able to make shots when he does give it up.”

Dillon Brooks added 20 points and four assists on 8-of-13 shooting. Brooks also converted on 4-of-8 from three to get out of his shooting funk.

Desmond Bane continued to improve his game with his second career start, finishing with a career-high 18 points, two assists, and two steals.

Morant tallied his third double-double of the season, finishing with 15 points and a game-high 11 assists.

“I feel like we have a very dangerous team, knocking down shots,” Morant said after the victory. “We encourage everybody from the first man to the last man to shoot it and let it fly. We all got that confidence in each other.”

After the game, Morant’s work wasn’t entirely done, apparently. He was back on the court putting up shots.

“As far as my shooting after (the game), I feel like I have to be better on the court in all areas,” Morant explained. “I wasn’t happy. I wasn’t satisfied, so I just wanted to finish getting some extra work in. That’s really about it.”
