Ice Cream Dreams

Rafael Gonzalez’s dream of owning an ice cream shop never melted.

He got the idea when he was 4 years old, living in Chihuahua, Mexico. “I knew I was going to do this for life,” says Gonzales, 36. 

He and his brothers, Ari and Alberto Gonzalez, are now owners of seven La Michoacana ice cream shop locations in the Mid-South.

On a recent Thursday evening, customers streamed into the La Michoacana at 4091 Summer Avenue. They stood in a long but fast-moving line that stopped at a sign reading, “Wait here for your turn!” The walls on the almost-cafeteria-size room were painted pink, blue, and white. People began filling up the numerous tables and chairs, frozen treats in hand.

It Began in Michoacán

The La Michoacana story began in the 1900s when a group of people from Italy moved to Mexico and taught residents of Michoacán how to make sandals, guitars, and ice cream, Gonzalez says. “This was in a little bitty town, Tocumbo, in Michoacán, Mexico.”

The sandals were made out of rubber and leather, the acoustic guitars were built out of wood, and the ice cream was chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. “So, basically the first ice cream in Mexico was in Michoacán,” he says.

Roberto Andrade was one of the first people they taught to make ice cream in Michoacán, Rafael says. That was the start of the “La Michoacana” ice cream shops. Andrade then began putting the shops “in every single state of Mexico.”

In 1980, Rafael’s family moved from their home in Michoacán to Chihuahua, Mexico. Rafael’s dad, Alberto Gonzalez, began working for La Michoacana. Luis Andrade, the grandson of the founder, taught Alberto how to make the ice cream and the paletas — frozen fruit-flavored treats on a stick.

Four years later, Alberto opened his own La Michoacana shop in Chihuahua.

“I was born in an ice cream shop,” Rafael says. “I learned to walk in one of them. I learned to speak in one of them.”

And, he says, “When I was a little bitty kid, I said, ‘When I grow up, I’m going to open a store.’”

Once he was 8 years old, Rafael began helping his father in the store. “I was one of those kids asking my dad, ‘What are you doing?’ ‘What is that for?’ That’s how I learned. He had a lot of patience and he explained to me everything I asked.”

The recipes weren’t written down on paper, Rafael says. Somebody just teaches you how to do it “and it kind of sticks in your mind.”

His father wanted to put Rafael through college. “I said, ‘No, dad. I’m not going to college.’’’ He already had his life figured out. “I knew what I wanted to do and I’m still doing it. I graduated from high school and I was ready to come to the United States and open a store.”

A Sweet Move

In 2006, Rafael, who was 18, and Ari, who was 15, moved by themselves to Horn Lake, Mississippi. “To study English was one of the main reasons we came to the United States,” Rafael says.

They moved to Horn Lake because one of their cousins lived there, Ari says. He and Rafael and their brother Alberto now live in the area, he says.

Ari “fell in love with the idea of opening La Michoacana in Mississippi,” Rafael says.

Two years later — on March 7, 2008 — Rafael and Ari opened their first La Michoacana store at 1038 Goodman Road in Horn Lake. They opened without any advertising on TV or radio. “We were nervous,” Rafael says. “We just opened it and started working.” They thought, “Let’s see where it goes.”

The first day was a success. “Thank God there were a lot of customers that day. They were waiting for it to be open.” Customers told them they’d been waiting 10 years for the type of ice cream La Michoacana makes. It tastes like the ice cream they used to eat in whatever little town in Mexico they were from, Rafael says.

When they opened, they were making 18 flavors of ice cream and close to 30 flavors of frozen treats. Today, La Michoacana makes 36 flavors of ice cream and 50 flavors of frozen treats.

Their shops, like their flavors, grew. “After the first year we opened in Horn Lake, we opened the one on Winchester [6635 Winchester Road]. Then the next year, we did the Summer Avenue location, the biggest and busiest one.”

The first Summer Avenue location was in a 1,400-square-foot space at 4075 Summer. Five years later, they moved a few doors down to their current 5,000-square-foot space on Summer Avenue.

The next store was at 830 North Germantown Parkway, Suite 105-106, in Cordova, Tennessee. That was followed by two shops in Little Rock, Arkansas. They then opened one in Jackson, Tennessee, but, Rafael says, “After Covid, we had to close that one up.” Hopefully, he says, they’re going to open another shop in Jackson within the next two years.

They make all the ice cream and paletas — and one flavor of sherbet (lime) — at their 3,000-square-foot factory in Walls, Mississippi. They begin making everything at 6 “every morning,” Rafael says. It’s “ready to go” by 4 that afternoon.

Rafael and his brothers, along with eight employees, work at the shop Monday through Friday. They deliver the ice cream and paletas to the stores just about every afternoon. Saturdays and Sundays are strictly delivery days. “We all work together and we all do the same thing.”

Each day they make 150 15-liter buckets of ice cream and 3,000 to 4,000 paletas. “We split all the flavors into three days.”

Rafael starts working at 6 a.m. And he’s the last one to go home at 10 or 11 p.m., he says.

Fresh and Authentic Frozen Treats

Their ice cream is still made in “small batches,” Rafael says. Some businesses keep ice cream on the shelf for a long time. And that’s after it’s already been in a warehouse for a long period. Plus, it may have been made some time before it was delivered to the warehouse. La Michoacana ice cream “has never been in the freezer more than three days,” Rafael says. It was made either “the day before or the same day.”

Their ice cream “doesn’t have any preservatives and it’s all natural. The cream is a mixture of vanilla, butter, and coconut cream.”

“A lot of the fruit comes from Mexico,” Rafael says. Like nance, which are yellow berries, but not as sweet as fruit like apricots.

Other fruits they use in their ice cream and paletas include mamey, which is “like papaya. It also grows in Mexico”; pine nuts, which “almost taste like pecans”; and prickly pear, a “seasonal flavor” with a citrus taste.

Their other brother, Enrique Gonzalez, who lives in Chihuahua, helps them get supplies they can’t get in the United States.

Rafael, Ari, and their brother Alberto want to open more La Michoacana stores. “The idea is, yes, to keep growing.” But they don’t want to open stores all over the United States. “I would like to keep it around here. Just in the Mid-South.”

Rafael doesn’t want the stores to be too spread out because his customers, who he’s become friends with over the years, want to see him. And he wants to be able to get to each store each week. “We’d like to grow, but to grow into something I can handle.”

We All Scream

As for his product, Rafael admits he eats “plenty” of ice cream. “I have to make sure that it’s good.”

His wife Ana, though, “can go through a quart of ice cream a day. Every day. She loves ice cream. She says marrying an ice cream guy was a blessing for her.”

Their daughters Shayla and Ellie also are big ice cream fans.

Strawberries and cream made with homemade jelly is Rafael’s favorite ice cream flavor. And it’s been his favorite since he was a child. It’s “one of those flavors that stick in your mind.”

He prefers the spicy-flavored frozen fruit treats, including spicy lime, mango, cucumber, and pineapple.

La Michoacana also makes a “frozen sour spicy fruit treat,” which comes in a paleta or in a cup. “It’s just frozen mango with sugar. It’s got this sauce, chamoy, which is a mixture of peppers and limes. That makes it not as spicy, but makes it sour.”

Every once in a while they’ll “pull up a new flavor” of ice cream or paleta at La Michoacana, Rafael says. The “German,” one of their more recent ice cream flavors, is their take on a German chocolate cake. It’s made with almond, coconut, and pecans and comes in a chocolate or a vanilla base.

La Michoacana also sells salty food, which balances the sweetness of the ice cream. They sell nachos, corn on the cob, and elotes, or grilled corn on the cob with mayonnaise and cotija cheese.

They also feature chicharrones, pickled pork skins, in a salad made of cabbage, avocado, cheese, sour cream, tomato, and hot sauce. The ingredients are put in a flour shell and fried.

A Family Affair

Their dad, who is retired, visits “every two or three months” from his home in Chihuahua. He and his wife Sacorro recently were in Horn Lake. “He’s the biggest supervisor and the biggest inspector.”

Alberto makes sure his sons are doing everything right. “He was strict with us and still is. If he doesn’t like it, he’s going to throw it away: ‘You’re not going to sell this.’ He wants to make sure everything is run the same way in each store.”

They’re busy year round, but traffic is heavier, obviously, in the summertime. “I counted last Sunday. It was 42 15-liter buckets on Summer. And I want to say more than 3,000 [paletas] a day.”

Like his forebears, Rafael never wrote down any recipes. “Everything is in my mind. Basically it’s a tradition. And, hopefully, my daughters will continue. And I will teach them how to do it so they can learn the way to make it.”

For about a decade, Jim and Virginia Cavender have been stopping at La Michoacana on Sundays for ice cream or paletas. “We just love all the flavors, the quality of the ice cream,” Jim says. “It’s always top-notch.”

The ice cream or paletas will be their dinner that night, Virginia says.

They got to know the family after they visited the Summer Avenue store on the night of Rafael’s birthday celebration. They were invited to stay for the party. “They’re just such a great family,” Jim says.

Virginia, a former school teacher, even tutored Rafael’s oldest daughter at one time.

They surprise Virginia with something different every Sunday she visits La Michoacana. “I take a picture and put it on Facebook every Sunday night,” she says.

Out-of-town friends are captivated by Virginia’s photos. “When they come to Memphis they want to get something like I had.”

“This is my life,” Rafael says. “This is my place. And I would like to come to my shops every day and hang out and work. Because, having been doing this all my life, even if I retire, I’ll still be doing it. I’ll still be coming in. I’ll be the one opening and the one to close.”

Stay Cool

Cool Treats

You would think ice cream, rich in fats and sugar, would be bad for you. But numerous studies have pointed to the opposite conclusion. People who ate ice cream about twice a week have about a 10 percent lower rate of serious cardiovascular disease, as well as lower rates of diabetes and fatty liver disease. Most doctors don’t believe it’s the ice cream (correlation is not causation, after all), but it’s a result that won’t go away. 

Personally, I believe ice cream helps you live longer because ice cream gives you something to live for. Memphis, as we all know, is hot as Hades in the summertime, so we’re a frozen treat town. The granddaddy of cool is Jerry’s Sno Cones. The Bluff City landmark is famous for its decadent shaved ice creations, available in exotic flavors like Hurricane Elvis and Legit. The populace was shocked when owner David Acklin announced the closure of their original location on Wells Station in Berclair, but the Cordova location at 1601 Bonnie Lane is still going strong, and the owner is canvassing his patrons for suggestions as to where to open a new Jerry’s. 

Mempops’ mobile unit is a familiar sight at concerts, games, and festivals. Their two locations, in the Crosstown Concourse and in East Memphis at 1243 Ridgeway, are the places to go for some chilled goodness. Mempops comes in cream (keep it simple with the vanilla, or go with cookies-and-cream if you’re feeling uppity) or fruity sorbet (I’m a raspberry lemonade man, myself, but don’t sleep on the spicy pineapple) varieties. 

Another pop option is La Michoacana, the Mexican ice cream shop at 4091 Summer Avenue. Their butter pecan pop is to die for, and they’ve got a wide selection of ice cream flavors like tres leches and tequila. 

The newest entry in the creamy game is Zio Matto Gelato. The Italian creamery’s products have been available all over town, from South Point Grocery to Villa Castrioti in Cordova, and you’ve probably seen their stand in the FedExForum. Now, they’ve opened a new home base in Central Station Downtown. If you’re a little sweaty from visiting Tom Lee Park, pop in for a bowl of the tiramisu gelato. Cool Beats at Eight & Sand

In summer’s swelter, nothing spells relief like a tall drink on crushed ice in a chill bar. Eight & Sand, in the Central Station Hotel, has all that, and the fresh jams to keep you there. Hearing the unmuddied bass and pristine highs of the space’s custom EgglestonWorks speakers, any music lover is likely to exclaim “cooool.” 

The bar is practically a temple to the art of DJ’ing, thanks to its towering shelves of vinyl records, ready to be spun in a deluxe DJ booth they’ve dubbed “Elmertha.” Elmertha’s a veritable pulpit of funk, especially considering that the vinyl amassed around her is packed with Memphis jams from all eras. Chad Weekley, Central Station Hotel’s music curator, says the focus on Memphis music was baked into the bar’s design from the start. “There’s probably 4,000 pieces of wax there, and it’s all connected to Memphis, some way, somehow. And we’re steadily adding to it.”

That collection alone, and the chance to play through an advanced hi-fi system, makes Eight & Sand an attractive venue to DJs from all over the city — and many from beyond. The bar has booked many world-class platter spinners, including Skratch Bastid and DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill (on 4/20, no less). Their international draw will be especially apparent on June 1st, when the featured DJ will be Rich Medina. His appearance will be a full-circle moment for Weekley and the bar, now in its fifth year. 

“Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest and Rich had a legendary DJ night in NYC in the early 2000s, and Rich now runs the best vinyl bar in Miami, Dante’s HiFi,” says Weekley. “I definitely modeled Eight & Sand a little bit off of Dante’s, for sure.” Other notable DJs appearing at the bar this summer will be DJ DāM-FunK and house music giant Mark Farina. — Alex Greene

Global Cafe’s Fruity Cocktails

You know what’s cool in the summertime? A big, refreshing, ice-cold, fruity cocktail. You know what else is cool? Helping refugees and immigrants who are trying to acclimate to American culture and lawfully enter our society. And you know what is really, really cool? Doing both of those things at once.

That’s where the Global Cafe comes in. Located in Crosstown, it’s a business that pours all its proceeds back into its employees — paying them a living wage, offering English lessons, free shoes, profit-sharing, and helping to integrate them and their families into Memphis.

Now, about those cocktails. … Cafe manager Juan Viramontes, himself an immigrant from Mexico, specializes in crafting Global Cafe’s famous fruit-based drinks, created using fresh seasonal fruit, including pineapple, kiwi, mango, peaches, and watermelon. “Whatever’s in season.”

The Global Cafe’s most famous — and most Instagrammed — drink is its “Mangorita,” which features an entire mango carved into a rose sitting atop 20 ounces of Juan’s Famous Margarita. They are indeed terrific, but for something equally delicious but a little less over-the-top, I recommend the cafe’s Kiwi Lime Drop. It’s a variation on the classic lemon drop, but decidedly more complex and, yes, more delicious. The good news is that whichever drink you have, you can be assured that you’re helping immigrants and refugees while getting your drink on. What could be cooler? — Bruce VanWyngarden

Free, Free, Free

Money burning a hole in your wallet? Cool it with something free, and there’s always something that’s zero dollars and zero cents to do in the 901 in the summer.

Wanna get fit? Baptist Health and Wellness Series at Overton Park Shell offers yoga and pilates, Zumba, and more — all for free. Meanwhile, Shelby Farms Park’s Get Outside! Fitness series includes free yoga and Kidonetics for kids, free mat Pilates, free mental fitness, and more. And Memphis River Parks Partnership has free fitness classes popping up seemingly everywhere.

If you want to catch live music this summer, how about a free concert? There’s Overton Park Shell’s Orion Free Concert Series and Overton Square Music Series, where you can bring a picnic blanket or lawn chairs and settle down for live music. Germantown Performing Arts Center has its Happy Hour in the Grove on Friday nights where you can enjoy free music, drink specials, deals on local beer, and $5 wine, and Bartlett Performing Arts & Conference Center has its Music by the Lake concert on Friday, June 14th.

If you’ve got a kid (K-12), sign them up for a 901 Student Passport at 901studentpassport.com. The passport gets students and a parent free admission during summer months (through August 2nd) to 12 cultural institutions including the National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, and Stax Museum of American Soul Music. 

If you’re not a kid but like free admission to places, don’t you worry! The Dixon Garden & Gallery always has free admission. The Brooks has free admission (and sometimes art-making activities) on Saturdays at 10 a.m. to noon. Stax has its Free Family Day on the second Saturday of every month that offers free admission plus activities. And for the summer the Metal Museum has brought back its Whet Thursdays, which includes free admission, live demonstrations, and more after-hours on the last Thursday of the month. 

And, get this, there’s still more free and very cool stuff that I could go on about, but I’m at my word count, and my words, like Dickens’, aren’t free. So keep up with these organizations at their websites. Okay, cool? — Abigail Morici

Your best bet at catching one of DJ Nico Hatchett’s legendary sets locally is after TONE’s Juneteenth weekend. Hatchett is the chief event coordinator for TONE Gallery and helped book Erykah Badu for this year’s Juneteenth celebration. “I love that a lot of the local performers get to say, once they leave the stage, they were on the lineup with Erykah Badu in their city.” However, the fun doesn’t stop there for Hatchett, as she and her best friend, will keep the late night vibes going afterwards on the premises with a set after Badu performs. “It’s going to be packed, and it’s going to be fun.” 

The classically trained musician-turned-DJ specializes in mixing house, techno, Jersey, and jungle music with sweet throwbacks featured in her set. “I play a lot of music that is nostalgically known, like R&B music or even church samples… stuff that is uniquely Black.”

This summer presents a “Where’s DJ Nico” type of vibe as Hatchett will be leaving her mark on a number of cities. She recently made her Atlanta debut at BrainWorld on May 24th, and DJ’d at the renowned dance and night club, Le Bain, in New York the next day. On May 31st she’ll be at Poor Boys Bar in New Orleans. She’ll also be playing Los Angeles Pride on her birthday, June 7th.

“I’m surprised, but not surprised at my growth. I’ve been a musician my whole life so the way I apply myself and work with other people just makes sense,” she says. “I really try to build community, like it’s not just to get booked. It’s meant to be a continued, running, nurtured relationship.” — Kailynn Johnson

Pinball at Flip Side

The heyday of the pinball machine was the 1950s, when every decent dive or halfway sizeable corner drugstore had one of the jingle-jangle contraptions, usually located near its entrance or, maybe, a back exit. 

For the players themselves, the machines were an indoor sport which, then as now, could be played au solitaire or as a group event. At a nickel per game, competitors took turns to see who could rack up the most points or, better yet, free games, which signaled themselves with a loud and mellow TONK sound that, to the usually adolescent devotees, was rewardingly orgasmic.

All that is still the drill at Flip Side, the self-described pinball bar on Autumn Avenue in the neighborhood of Crosstown Concourse, where some 15 of the machines — with thematic names (and corresponding narrative structures) like “Foo Fighters,” “Jaws,” and “AC/DC” — line one long wall of the establishment. You pay for the games not with nickels but with reasonably inexpensive tokens, and the experience is still satisfyingly addictive.

Flip Side doubles as a sports bar, with five big screens tuned to such athletic events or game shows or whatever as happen to be going on. There are electronic dartboards, too, and a decent menu featuring pizza, burgers, mac-and-cheese, and beers, including some interesting sour varieties of the latter. Service is as good as you could ask for, given the crowds on hand, and conversations — at the bar, at the tables, or at the machines — are remarkably possible even amid the streaming background music of the place and the nonstop dings and dongs and bells and, hopefully, TONKs of the pinball action.

Cool Off With a Cold One

Vacation and beers go together like Memphis heat and humidity. But if you can’t get away, these three Memphis watering holes have vibes (and beers) dank enough to take you there even if it’s just for a little while.

• Birdie’s: Hit the links without that Memphis heat and humidity. Birdie’s offers local craft in cans and on draft. Grab a cold one, head into a virtual golf bay and swing away. You can even ask staffers to set you up on some iconic courses. Oh, and the food is great, too — tater tots, pretzels, chicken sandwiches, and more.

Mary’s Bar of Tropical Escapism: Truly escape to the sandy shores of your beach fantasy right on South Cooper. Mary’s B.O.T.E. takes tiki drinks seriously with tons of tropical tipples to melt in your hand. The bar’s draft towers carry local craft, too, if a beer floats your boat. Escape at the amazing bar or to the great flamingo-ed patio outside.   

Momma’s: Roll down the truck window, hang your arm out, and get back to your roots at Momma’s. The “blue-collar diner’s destination” really is the first and last bar in Memphis (if you’re traveling Crump or I-55). And Momma’s brags it’s the only trucker-themed bar in America.

Drink laid-back beer. Sing along with Travis Tritt on the juke. Ain’t nobody gonna laugh at you. This is Momma’s. That food, tho. Momma’s nails Southern staples like chicken biscuits, smokestack chili, meatloaf, burgers, wings, and more. — Toby Sells

Sunglasses Are Cool

Everybody looks cool in sunglasses. Not just Jack Nicholson, Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, and Morris the Cat. All you have to do is put on some shades, and you’ve become mysterious, sexy, interesting, and rebellious.

Sunglass Hut, which leases a space at Macy’s Oak Court, has hundreds of sunglasses in stock for sun worshippers or nightspot habitués. Brands include Versace, Gucci, Prada, Oakley, Balenciaga, Ray-Ban, and Maui Jim. “We have kids’ sunglasses also,” says Terriese Williams, manager of the Sunglass Hut at Macy’s. 

What’s the attraction of sunglasses? “They’re fashionable. Sunglasses are an accessory to your outfit,” she says. With sunglasses, “You’re all put together.”

Men’s and women’s sunglasses are not alike. “It’s the shapes and the cuts.”

A lot of women want cat-eye sunglasses, she says, as well as different colors of tortoiseshell. And, she says, “Women like big glasses. They’re oversized.”

The guys? “Men’s are more sleek and more neutral.”

If people don’t know what type of sunglasses they want, Williams provides some help. You can also try on sunglasses digitally before you buy them. 

Sunglass Hut also carries polarized sunglasses, which provide extra protection from the sun’s glare. Those are popular with truck drivers, people working outside, or those who have light sensitivity.

Summer in the City: From Cold Beer and Sweet Treats to Kayaks and Museums — Make the Most of the Season

Welcome to summertime in Memphis, Tennessee. It’s hot. It’s humid. The unforgiving sun is shining like a diamond. But the city’s opening back up in ways we only could have dreamed of this time last year. Whether outdoors or in, there’s fun to be had — and ways to cool down. Snow cones, refreshing cocktails, canoeing, swimming, and more await to make this summer the best one yet.

Assignment: Drink Beer

Summer is for beer. Cold ones are just better on hot days. That’s science.

The pandemic kept us on the porch for much of the summer 2020 beer-drinking season. Those annual traditions — like cookouts, concerts, and baseball games — all easily melted behind daily worries of a cruel illness that took so much more than just our summertime fun time.

For most, COVID-19 worries have now melted and those summer traditions have priority seating. We know what we missed last year, and we now know just how important that fun stuff — like drinking summer beers with your friends — really is.

To ensure you don’t regret missing a moment this summer, here is your Memphis summertime, beer-drinking assignment sheet.

1. Drink light beer at AutoZone Park.

Beer and baseball is the winningest combo since pork shoulder and dry rub. Let’s face it, they belong together.

You absolutely can grab an IPA (and probably other styles) at the park. But the magic of the park and the game is really made with a light American lager, like Miller Lite. It’s simple, dependable, and when it’s served ice-cold in a big plastic cup — don’t ask me how it works but — the summer spell is cast.

2. Drink a fruity sour beer watching an outdoor concert.

Drinking to livestreams in your pajamas cannot compare to dancing to live music in your bare feet. We’re back at it this year with tons of live music events guaranteed to be packed and to boogie-oogie-oogie you from your socially distanced funk-ola.

Fruity sours are summer-perfect. They’re different, light, sweet, sometimes mouth-puckeringly tart, but predictably transportive. Like dancing in a crowd in 2021, sours will make you say, “Whoa. This is different. But I like it.”

3. Drink an epic hazy IPA at your favorite taproom.

Your favorite brewery’s taproom was closed last year. You couldn’t try the crazy beer with the crazy name that would never make it to grocery-store shelves.

Now that you can, you may not know that the national haze craze — the wave of hazy IPAs — has pooled securely in Memphis breweries. Call me a hazy boi all you like, but these beers are great.

They’re soft and sometimes sweet. Here, they show off the real creativity of Memphis brewers, the diversity of flavors these talented folks can concoct from one style.

Create a Yard for Wildlife

Tired of mowing and maintaining a lawn? I was, too. That’s why, a few years back, my wife and I began transforming our Midtown backyard into a natural habitat that attracts birds, hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. By using native and easy-to-care-for perennials, our main chore each year is to cut them back in the spring, fertilize them, and watch them grow and blossom. And as a bonus, it’s beautiful.

Our native black and blue salvia flowers, butterfly bushes, bee balm plants, daylilies, lantana, orpine, and even basil and thyme flowers attract hummingbirds better than our feeders do, though we have a couple of those, as well. The flowers also bring in bees and butterflies of every variety throughout the summer and fall. We keep a bird feeder filled with seeds year-round, which keeps the cardinals and finches nesting nearby.

The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) offers guidelines for making your yard a sustainable environment. The five keys are: food (plants and feeders that provide nectar, seeds, nuts, fruits, berries, foliage, pollen, and insects); water (birdbaths or other sources); cover (bushes, trees, and tall grasses); places to raise young (ditto the bushes, trees, and tall grasses); and sustainable gardening practices (no chemicals). If you’re into that sort of thing, you can apply to the NWF for a sign to put in your yard when you think you qualify.

We don’t have an official sign, but by midsummer our backyard is filled with life and beauty that brings us enjoyment throughout the day. By July, our fig tree is an all-day party. (Pecking order: blue jays, robins, cardinals, then assorted little guys and squirrels.) We have thrilling aerial “battles” between bumblebees, hummingbirds, and dragonflies as they jockey for position on the blooms. And our butterfly variety is second to none.

Beat the Heat With Sweet Summer Treats

Where I come from, humidity doesn’t exist. So it’s understandable that this former desert-dweller constantly needs a way to stave off all that excess water vapor when the Memphis summertime rolls in with its 90-plus-degree temperatures. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to temper the heat wave, and many of them just so happen to come out of Memphis’ booming food scene. Here are just a few ways to keep it cool while the sun is shining.

For something a little different from your standard ice cream cone, hop out to Cordova or East Memphis for a refreshing take on the sweet confection. Poke World serves up rolled ice cream, a dessert originating from Thailand. A regular ice cream base is poured over a freezing stainless steel surface and, once solidified, scraped off and formed into thin rolls. It’s both novelty and familiarity all at once, rounded out with other sweet toppings. Celebrate the season with the Summer Love, covered in bananas, strawberries, and whipped cream.

Down Summer Avenue (or one of its other four locations), Memphis’ very own paleteria always comes through in a pinch. La Michoacana serves up paletas, a popsicle derivation originating from Mexico. But these popsicles pack an extra punch that’s a cut above the usual frozen sugar water. Paletas are usually made from fresh fruits like mangos and strawberries or from creamier ingredients like chocolate. The bright, swirly combinations of fruity goodness will have your head spinning with brain freeze because it’s just so good. Devour at your own peril, but no one leaves La Michoacana unsatisfied.

But if a little more zing is needed in a dessert, just head on over to Global Cafe and let Juan work his magic behind the bar. The food hall’s cocktails always pack a punch, but go with this year’s seasonal drink, the Peaches and Cream. It comes as advertised, fresh California yellow peaches pureed into silver rum and topped with whipped cream. It’s basically ice cream in a cocktail format, and all the better for it. I stopped at one, but the urge to grab several more sits right there, dangerous and tantalizing.

These sweets are best in moderation, saved for a truly hot summer day. But there’s plenty more out there, of perhaps the Jerry’s or MEMPops variety, so get to exploring. — Samuel X. Cicci

Day at the Museum

It’s a sidewalk sizzling Memphis summer, and after a year-plus of social distancing and livestreaming digital events, I’m ready to resume one of my favorite air-conditioned(!) pastimes — strolling leisurely through one of the Bluff City’s museums.

With recently debuted and soon-to-open exhibits at many of the museums in question, one would be hard-pressed to find a better time to take in some fine art, history, or pop culture.

The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Overton Park has too many exhibits to give a full accounting here, but “Persevere and Resist: The Strong Black Women of Elizabeth Catlett” and “Memphis Artists In Real Time” are two worth a closer look. Opening later this month is “Eggleston: The Louisiana Project” featuring work by Memphis photographer William Eggleston.

Over at the Memphis Museum of Science & History (MoSH for short, though old-timers might know it as the Pink Palace), museum marketing manager Bill Walsh says, “Our ‘Machine Inside: Biomechanics’ exhibit and Sea Lions: Life by A Whisker giant screen movie make MoSH the perfect place to cool off this summer and explore science, history, and nature.”

Meanwhile, further east, the Dixon, with its gardens and museum galleries, offers an equilibrium between indoor and outdoor activities. “We love to offer ways for visitors to beat the heat,” says Chantal Drake. “Cooling off in the museum is an enjoyable and educational way to get out of the heat. Summer exhibitions at the Dixon Gallery & Gardens highlight local artists, a centenarian artist, and our founders, Margaret and Hugo Dixon.

“Although it’s summer in Memphis,” she continues, “the shady spots in the garden are perfect for a picnic where visitors can top it off with gelato from Zio Matto at Food Truck Fridays.”

Meanwhile, at Elvis Presley’s Graceland, David Beckwith says, “Graceland officially kicks off the summer with the All-American 4th of July Weekend. The two-day event will include concerts, parties, a barbecue, a gospel brunch, special tours, and more, all capped off with an Elvis-themed fireworks spectacular.”

That’s just the tip of the hunka, hunka iceberg, though. The “Inside the Walt Disney Archives” exhibition, which opens July 23rd, celebrates the legacy of the Walt Disney Company archives, with behind-the-scenes access never before granted to the public. Currently open is the “King of Karate” exhibit. Included in the pop-up exhibit’s collection will be Presley’s personal karate gis, his seventh- and eighth-degree black belt certificates, and the original handwritten script for his 1974 karate documentary, The New Gladiators.

Finally, at Stax, they’re celebrating their archives with “Solid Gold Soul: The Best of the Rest from the Stax Museum,” which opens Friday, July 16th. “‘Solid Gold Soul’ showcases the museum staff’s favorite objects that are not part of the permanent exhibits and, with the exception of Isaac Hayes’ office desk and chair, all items are on display for the first time,” says Stax’s Jeff Kollath. “Highlights include rare photographs of the Bar-Kays, Otis Redding, and Isaac Hayes; stage costumes worn by members of Funkadelic and the TSU Toronadoes; and rare vinyl records and photographs from the recently acquired Bob Abrahamian Collection.”

Of course, there are more Memphis museums to explore. The views from the Metal Museum’s bluffs are worth the trip, and every Memphian needs to visit the National Civil Rights Museum — preferably more than once. The Withers Collection Museum & Gallery on Beale is a personal favorite, and its deceptively small size in square footage is no hindrance to the breadth of Memphis life on view, as captured by the lens of photographer Ernest Withers. Whether it’s culture, history, science, or just powerful air-conditioning you seek, Memphis’ museums make for some special summer fun. — Jesse Davis

Paddle Your Cares Away

For this former Boy Scout, summer means it’s paddling season. While crafts like kayaks, canoes, or stand-up paddle boards take a bit of skill to keep under control, it’s not a steep learning curve, and the rewards are enormous, including the sublime quiet of such boating: All you hear is the dip of your paddle in the water and whatever the environment offers.

The environment can be spectacular if you make the short trip out to the Ghost River, a section of the Wolf River. Unlike parts of the Wolf in and around Memphis, the Ghost River section to the east has not been dredged and is dominated by cypress trees rising solemnly out of the unhurried flow, complemented with abundant wildlife, flowers, and grasses.

As Mark Babb, co-founder of Ghost River Rentals (ghostriverrentals.com), puts it, “Thanks to the efforts of the Wolf River Conservancy and others in the late ’80s, there is no erosion. It’s a Class 1 river, with a mild current. But we won’t go down the river with a chain saw and clear out the vegetation to make it an easy trip. We want to keep it natural. And when these trees fall across the river, they help to restrict the flow to prevent the erosion so it doesn’t become channelized or become a steep-banked river, like you see in other sections.”

As a result, Babb’s boat rental service recommends having at least one experienced paddler per boat. “A paddler needs to know how to steer a boat,” he says, “how to re-right their boat, how to avoid the tree limbs, how to portage over and around the downed trees.” Or one can spring for a guide to lead a group through the area.

Another option is to stick closer to the city. “When it comes to inexperienced paddlers, we recommend Kayak Memphis Tours (kayakmemphistours.com), which my son started. They offer canoeing and kayaking on the Memphis harbor and at Shelby Farms, including full moon floats every month, and July Fourth fireworks viewing out on the harbor.” — Alex Greene

Cool off at Jerry’s

With apologies to Mungo Jerry and his song, “In the Summertime”: In the summertime when the weather is high — you can choose from 100 flavors at Jerry’s Sno Cones.

That also goes for fall, winter, and spring. And you can get hamburgers, chicken tenders, and other food items at either of the Jerry’s locations (1657 Wells Station Road or 1601 Bonnie Lane in Cordova).

Owner David Acklin was a customer before he owned the business, which he believes opened in 1967. “I used to go there when I was a teenager,” says David whose favorite flavor was — and still is — blue raspberry.

He got to know the owners L.B. and Cordia Clifton, whose son Jerry was the namesake of the business. The Cliftons became his “replacement grandparents,” says Acklin, who was 18 when he lost his grandfather. Acklin worked at a printing company at the time, but he also worked for the Cliftons for free after he got off his other job.

Acklin eventually bought Jerry’s Sno Cones, but he continued to work at the printing company. “I used to change clothes at red lights. Take off my tie and put on my shorts. … I used to wear penny loafers. I’d pull my socks off and slide into my flip-flops.”

There would already be a line when he got there at 3:30 p.m.

Acklin remembers going outside one July. “The line went straight out around the sign and two houses down.” He asked a kid in line to count the people. “So, 220 people.”

Summer in the Streets

Memphis has enough parks and playgrounds and other open space to accommodate a generous amount of summer recreation. And there are things to do off-campus, as it were.

The Bluff City has historically not witnessed the street stickball or other hazardous pastimes of so much big-city urban legend elsewhere, although the city’s sidewalks still work for hopscotch, and, with proper caution and adult supervision and sufficient notice to the neighbors, a children’s game or two undoubtedly gets played in the quieter residential coves.

As it happens, the streets are literally ideal for one particular form of recreation, which also has numerous utilitarian aspects. That would be bike-riding — if performed in the numerous lanes provided and plainly marked out along the margins of city streets and roads and carried out with sufficient attention to the rules of safety, particularly the wearing of helmets. Memphis has a variety of clubs for cyclists, and these groups generally provide for training and both spontaneous and carefully structured events.

As it happens, the simple act of walking and, with special care for fellow pedestrians, running are the most basic, easiest, and least expensive of street pastimes. Here, too, the largely common-sense rules of safety, such as attention to crosswalks and traffic lights, is called for.

Luckily, the Memphis Runners Track Club and other groups organize races and fun runs during the warm-weather months, and these, in cooperation with city government, take place along pre-planned and sectioned-off routes. The charge, when there is one, is nominal.

The often-overlooked Mud Island Riverwalk is technically not a street attraction, but it is outdoors, free of charge, and — in the oft-abused phrase — educational with its evocation of the city’s larger landscape, with enough DIY potential to appeal to the liberated spirit.

And, as veterans remember about the Jakob Dylan street concert of some 20 years ago, a serendipity stemming from a Beale Street opening, once in a while we have the good fortune of some free music. Maybe we’ll get lucky again. — Jackson Baker

Swim!

“It’s hot, and you need a pool!”

That’s how the classic Memphis commercial for Watson’s announced the beginning of summer. When the thermometer creeps upward, nothing is better than splashing in a pool or diving into a lake. But first, you should learn to swim, says Rob Snowberger.

As a swim coach for 50 years and the owner of Coach Rob’s Pool School, Snowberger has taught tens of thousands of Memphians to swim. “Drowning is the second-largest cause of accidental death, after car accidents,” he says. “It is the leading cause of death among preschool children. Below 3,000 deaths is considered a ‘good year.’ Seventy percent of those preschooler deaths take place in the backyard pool, which is the focus of our swim school — trying to avoid that catastrophe.”

Snowberger says it’s never too late to learn to swim — his oldest beginning student ever was 72. Children as young as 18 months can start learning, but the coach says most kids don’t develop the physical coordination needed until about age 3. “Swimming is a very complex feat. You’re kicking your legs, moving your arms, controlling your breathing. You’re turning your head in sequence with your arms. Dribbling a basketball is an easy skill, compared to all those things.”

Is it okay to jump in Memphis’ most famous body of water, the Mississippi River? “Oh, hell no!” says Snowberger.

Swimming in swiftly moving water is extremely dangerous. The Mississippi might look lazy on the surface, but that hides some of the strongest currents in the world. With those currents come all the debris that washed into the river as it traveled from Minnesota to Memphis. Swimmers run the risk of being struck by debris or pulled under by those currents.

Luckily, there are plenty of places to get wet, from public pools to backyard splashes to lakes. Snowberger says if you have small children, avoid the inflatable arm floaties and invest in a good life jacket with a strap between the legs.

La Michoancana and MEMPops expand

Rafael Gonzalez was raised on Popsicles.

His father, Alberto, was a Popsicle-smith, or paletero, in Mexico for more than 45 years, and he and his two brothers, Ari and Alberto, have carried on the tradition in Memphis for the past 10 through their paleterias (Mexican Popsicle shops) La Michoacana.

Memphis has welcomed the paleteros with open arms, albeit sticky ones, to the extent that the Gonzalez now own five La Michoacanas in the Mid-South.

In fact, Rafael and family recently seized the opportunity to move into a new space next door to one of their most popular locations on Summer that is four times the size, mostly because it was time and Memphis had spoken.

“Our customers determined the move,” Rafael says. “They kept telling us, ‘You need a bigger space.'”

High ceilings, a big open space with ample seating, and paletas and helados (ice cream) spanning two walls — the new-and-improved La Michoacana, now located at 4075 Summer, is a paleta and helados devotee’s dream.

Sweet cream pinks, mints, and baby blues keep it nectarous, and spiffy new signage is especially helpful for newcomers.

There’s outdoor seating, six additional employees, new equipment, and, wait for it, new flavors.

All Berry, Jerez (Mexican sherry), Mexican Peanut Butter, Tasty Peach (peaches and cream), Nuez Maple, Crunchy Chocolate, Strawberry Chocolate Chip, and the one Rafael is most excited about, Elvis Presley’s Memory — you guessed it, banana, peanut butter, and Mexican cookie crust.

Dang.

They also brought in some additional savory snacks including corn on the cob, spicy hand-cut potato chips, and Mexican street fruit with watermelon, cucumber, jicama, pineapple, and cantaloupe with lime and chili powder.

“The customers love the new place. They are so happy,” Rafael says.

Rafael returns the sentiment.

“I love Memphis,” he says. “This is just another way to experience Memphis.”

The new La Michoacana is located at 4075 Summer, with four other locations including 6635 Winchester, 2733 Getwell at I-240, 1038 Goodman W in DeSoto County, Mississippi, and one in Little Rock.

Memphis can’t get enough Popsicles. But who can, really?

MEMPopS, the locally sourced, all-natural version of homemade ice pops, has experienced its own maturation over the past year.

Last summer owner/operator/Popsicle-smith Chris Taylor set up a couple of carts around town peddling his concoctions of frozen pops such as mint lemonade and jalapeño pineapple that he came up with in his house.

Then he jumped on the food truck train with an old mail truck that he customized and painted a dreamy blue and set up shop at Memphis Made Brewing Co.

Before he knew it, he was working multiple events every weekend and realized it was time to get serious.

“By the end of the summer, I saw the potential and thought I should open a store,” Taylor says.

That vision was realized in March when Taylor opened his first ice lollies shop in the old Rock ‘N Dough location at 1243 Ridgeway at the corner of Park in East Memphis.

“I was driving out East, and I knew it had become available, so I thought I would at least pop in and see,” he says.

MEMPopS are made by hand.

“It was perfect. It was open with high ceilings and had a set-up where people could see us making everything and we could tell customers our story,” Taylor says.

Recently Taylor bought a new machine that can handle making 360 popsicles an hour, a big jump from the inaugural pace of 160 a day.

“We can make 1,500 a day at the store if we’re rolling,” he says.

Which has come in handy for Taylor on days like July 4th.

“I thought I was going to have a nice, chill Fourth, but then the Redbirds bought 3,000, and I thought, ‘There goes that weekend,'” Taylor says. “The FedEx St. Jude Classic bought 6,000. I guess we’ve done a good job of putting ourselves out there and telling our story.”

That story is one of using all natural ingredients and as many locally sourced makings as possible.

“What I say we are is what we do, and you can see that when you come in the shop. You can see us cutting strawberries or roasting the peaches before we make them into Popsicles,” he says.

What’s next?

Midtown, downtown, Collierville or Germantown.

Then the world.

“I have a partner, JC Youngblood, for future locations. We don’t have a specific spot picked out. Just if it feels right, we’ll go for it,” Taylor says. “We’re just trying to make awesome Popsicles with locally sourced ingredients and trying to have fun.”

La Michoacana’s Pineapple Chili Fruit Bar

I was told there was one paleta I absolutely had to try at La Michoacana, and that’s their pineapple chili fruit bar ($2.13).

I expected to see chunks of pineapple and chili. I was wrong. You can see the chunks of pineapple. What’s hidden inside the fruit bar are pieces of lime and what appears to be hints of chili powder. It looks like red pepper chili flakes and has the texture of a BBQ rub.

It didn’t taste at all like I expected. When you lick or even bite into the fruit bar, it’s nice and sweet. Then, there it is: The chili flakes add a kick of spice mixed in with the sweetness of the fruit. Is it a fruit bar that I’m eating at a dessert place or am I eating a spicy dish at a Mexican restaurant? My mouth is so confused, but in the most amazing way. Mind, blown!
