Music Video Monday: Top 10 of 2015

For our final Music Video Monday of 2015, I’m counting down the ten best videos of a fantastic year of collaboration between Memphis filmmakers and musicians.

I’m not usually one for lists, but hey, it’s the end of the year, so why not? This Top Ten list has13 entries, which just shows you how bad I am at this whole list thing. So here it is, the best Memphis music videos of 2015, arbitrarily chosen and ranked by me:

10. (tie) “If You Want It” – Black Rock Revival / “Lucky Or Strong” by Caleb Sweazy

Two Memphis acts created fight themed videos this year. Black Rock Revival mixed it up in the squared circle with director Nina Stakz.

Halloween 2015 Event Roundup

The last days of October provide numerous opportunities to don your scariest garb, beg for candy, paint sugar skulls, and act like a fool. Sometimes it’s even for a good cause. And because Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, the party goes on all weekend. Here’s a roundup featuring just a few of this season’s creepiest, kookiest, and ookiest opportunities for monstrous mischief.

Elmwood Cemetery’s annual Spirits with the Spirits party goes down Friday, October 30th, at 7 p.m., and allows visitors to raise glasses and make grave toasts in Memphis’ most scenic city of the dead. Tickets are $70, and the dress code is black-and-white casual, though costumes and characters are welcome (elmwoodcemetery.org). And speaking of the dead, Latino Memphis’ Day of the Dead Fiesta is also being held Friday. The fund-raising party features performances by the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Opera Memphis, New Ballet Ensemble, and Mariachi Guadalajara, as well as Dominican DJ Giovanni Rodriguez and Colombian singer Marcela Pinilla and her band (7-11:30 p.m., at downtown’s Cadre Building. $70. Latinomemphis.com).

Costumed fun for the whole family starts early on Saturday with an opportunity to make Midtown a cleaner place. The Mad Sweep of Madison Avenue starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 31st at Clean Memphis, 1859 Madison. Participants will pick up supplies and clear debris along the avenue from Cleveland to Cooper. The party starts at noon. Winners of the costume contest will receive gift bags valued at over $50 each, containing prizes from local Madison businesses. That leaves plenty of time to get ready for Mud Island’s annual Halloween on the Island, with games and trick-or-treating from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Admission is $5 per person.

Things heat up when the Halloween sun goes down. You can put on your “Million Dollar Boots” and take in the hip-hop stylings of Lord T & Eloise at the Sinners for Saints Ball, a benefit for the Church Health Center at Stop 345 (9 p.m.-3 a.m. Stop 345. $40). Or you can drop in on the Halloween Bash at Minglewood Hall, “A Scary Good Time,” featuring FreeWorld and benefiting Transformations Autism Treatment Center (9 p.m.-1 a.m. $25. halloweenbashmemphis.com).

Skinny’s Birthday Bash

JD Reager

Skinny McCabe

This weekend the Hi-Tone will host a two-day, all-star celebration in honor of the birthday of the club’s new-ish owner, Brian “Skinny” McCabe.

After serving as general manager for years at the now defunct Highland Strip nightclub Newby’s, McCabe took over the Hi-Tone last December after forming an agreement to purchase it from the previous owner, Jonathan Kiersky. Since then, McCabe has made few changes to the Midtown club, preserving the aesthetics, vibes and entertainment programming that helped turn the Hi-Tone into one of Memphis’ premier music venues.
“It’s been a roller coaster, but not anything I’m not used to,” says McCabe. “It’s a lot of work but I’ve got an amazing cast and crew. It blows me away how so many people are eager to help.”

For his birthday shows (dubbed “Skinny’s Super Sexy All-Star Celebrity Weekend: Birthday Edition”) this Friday and Saturday, McCabe booked some of Memphis’ higher profile acts, including Dead Soldiers, Mark Edgar Stuart, The Memphis Dawls, and Lord T and Eloise.

“I wanted to showcase some of the insane talent our city has to offer to people that may not make it out often. I’ve also been personal friends with most of these folks for years and really dig the music,” he says.

Music Video Monday: Lord T. and Eloise

Happy post-holiday weekend Music VIdeo Monday. Did your July 4th look something like this?

I’m guessing probably not, because no matter how crunk you got over the fireworks and hotdogs, you didn’t get as crunk as Lord T. and Eloise

Today’s video is the latest from Memphis’ own time travelling hip hop lords of vast wealth, and it’s a doozy.

“The Straight Liberace” pretty much sums up Lord T and Eloise’s sartorial philosophy, and this video is as gloriously over the top as the band’s legendary live performances.  I couldn’t decide which screenshot to use from this video, directed by Isaiah Conyers, aka Ikonick, so I’m just using all of them.

Decadence? Check. Women? Check. 25-foot velvet cape? Check. Giant glasses of champagne? Double check. Good taste? Nope.

If you can’t celebrate excess in a Lord T. and Eloise video, where can you do it?
