MEMernet: Lemon for Sale, Worst Place to Sh*t

Lemon

Want to buy a guaranteed “lemon edition” 2020 Lemon? Head on over to the Memphis section of Facebook Marketplace. Facebook user Drakkor Washington has it on offer for only $4,000.

Chicken Shit

Instagram’s ever-vigilant Memphis bathroom connoisseur memplops gave a rare look into the facilities of one very special chicken last week.

If you read the Flyer, you know Hernando’s Hide-A-Way offers Chicken Shit Bingo every Sunday night. Haven’t been? Well, have a look at the board.

As for a review, memplops gave the bingo chicken coop a 0/10 on ambiance as “hundreds of people are going watch you take a shit.”

King Flop

Lebron James gave a stunning performance in Memphis Saturday in a loss to the Grizzlies at FedExForum.

Griz shooting guard Dillon Brooks tapped James on the chin; no question about that. But “replays caught The King executing an Oscar-worthy flop” in exchange, according to the Clutch Points sports blog.

MEMernet: Standing Brooms, Kind Strangers, and an MLGW Valentine

Swept up

The entire internet was swept away (don’t judge me) by a viral tweet that had folks all over standing their brooms upright. The tweet said that NASA claimed a day last week was the only day of the year brooms would stand on their own because of gravitational pull.

Our very own editor, Bruce VanWyngarden, got in on the miracle, uh, I mean action.

Kind Strangers

Reddit user u/trillsuave posted that one of his elderly co-workers rides his bike to work every day. But he had a wreck last week, messed up his bike, and needed a replacement.

Within a day, the co-worker was able to secure his friend a new ride, thanks to the folks on the Memphis subreddit. Thanks for the kindness, kind strangers.

CA on Valentine’s

The Commercial Appeal got downright funny (well, punny funny) on Valentine’s Day last week. They posted a series of shareable e-cards, made especially for the Bluff City.

“Let’s grit and grind,” reads one. “Like Peabody Ave., the road to true love was never smooth,” reads another. But here’s my fave.

MEMernet: Rib Rewind, Tweet of the Week, Little Nuke

Rib Rewind

The Rendezvous took us back to the present last week with a rib-laced re-creation photo.

Three Navy football players tried the restaurant in 1981, in town for a game against Ohio State. The same guys booked flights to Memphis for last month’s Navy/Kansas State Liberty Bowl game and had those ribs again.

Tweet of the Week

“No pics but getting to see @Davecousar, @amylavere, Will Sexton, and @ShawnZorn together at a burger joint (@HueysRestaurant) is the type of thing that I moved here for.”

Little Nuke

“Last night’s sunset looked like someone nuked Little Rock.”

MEMernet: “Frayser Is Wild,” “Robbed at Gunpoint,” and Waxahatchee

A roundup of Memphis on the World Wide Web.

“Frayser is wild”

Posted to Reddit by u/Ceannfort

“Robbed at Gunpoint”

Robin Perkins, of Cooper-Young, described a harrowing robbery in the neighborhood on NextDoor last week.

“At 2 a.m., my upstairs neighbor was robbed at gunpoint going into his apartment. The suspect had an AK.

“His friend’s purse was taken, and he was struck across the face. I love CY. But this has come so close to my front door. Crime is everywhere. Very scary.”

Waxa-Sun

Indie singer/songwriter sensation Waxahatchee (Katie Crutchfield) stopped by Sun Studios with some pals last week. An Instagram post shows the four of them (Crutchfield far right) recreating the iconic Million Dollar Quartet photo.

MEMernet 2019 MVPs: Tittie Rocks, Buns Out, and Memplops

MEMernet All-Stars

This column is less than a year old, but certain posts here have swung above their weight. So here are the MVPs for MEMernet’s inaugural season.

#SunsOutBunsOut

A photo of this mostly naked man in Central Gardens tore through Memphis social media this summer.

InstaPlop!

The memplops Instagram keeps winning Instagram with its hilarious (and informative!) reviews of Memphis’ public bathrooms.

Rocky what?

Tracy Dobbins launched a new series of painted rocks hidden around town. It’s like 901 Rocks but with one difference. “These are my tittie rocks,” Dobbins explained on Instagram.

It shows anything’s possible online. Look for them online at #rockytittn.

MEMernet: A Test at Second Line and a Viral Mural

Hijinks & Hygiene

Chef Kelly English won Twitter (and marketing) Sunday with this:

English wrote, “Only one line! The holiday season just got a little less complicated for whichever young couple left this for us on our lawn last night. To celebrate them, I will give you $1 off of all your mimosas today at either restaurant if you mention the code #everyonehaswashedtheirhands.”

Viral Mural

A mural blew up on Reddit over the weekend. It was posted by u/bigtomisin with the title “Mural I painted in Memphis, Tennessee.” In one day, the post had more than 44,000 upvotes, 658 comments, and all the Reddit awards. The poster said it is “at Crosstown. They took it off the wall and hung it inside.”

Billy Bob at the zoo

On a Flyer story about a new bill that would allow the Memphis Zoo to sell alcohol, Jim Obranovich commented that it’d be fine but “only if it stays in the building or ‘beer tent’ where it’s purchased. … It’ll be a great day for the zoo when Billy Bob decides he wants to ride an elephant.”

MEMernet: New Pancho Man, Sno Way, Gears Ground

New Pancho Man

Pancho’s quietly rolled out its new Pancho Man for the lid of its iconic cheese dip last week. People expressed their feelings on the Flyer’s Facebook post about the change.

“Now my tattoo won’t make any sense!” said Lou Lou Brown.

Toni Lynn Campbell Bercha said, “Finally! It’s good to see the old racist cartoon go away!”

“So what they’re saying is a liberal complained it was racist,” said David Kiehna.

Richie Jarvis said, “The logo LESS likely to be tattoo’d on someone.”

“NOOOOOOOOOOO … I’ll still eat it,” wrote Ben Townsend.

Sno Way

Snow surprised many in Memphis last week. One University of Memphis student asked school president David Rudd to call off classes. He responded with a classic Rudd tweet.

Storms here earlier this week yielded mega-pixels of internet gold as several captured and shared a colorful rainbow that spanned the Memphis sky afterwards.

G-7 at Graceland

A New Yorker cartoon had Donald Trump considering Graceland as an alternative site for the G-7.

Dis tornado

Severe weather tore through Memphis last week, taking many by surprise as they woke up to the sound of tornado alarms. The storm took Memphis Twitter by storm, too.

“I hope dis tornado swing by my job & rip dat MF out tha ground,” wrote Emmet Durley.

“My girl phone start ringing at 6 a.m. I’m like who tf is flash flood,” Deion Sanders tweeted.

“Sirens so mf loud I thought we was finna have a purge!!” wrote Karla Denise.

Wolver-Rendezvous

An online version of X-Men comic spinoff Marauders found Wolverine issuing a shopping list to Kitty Pride. Top of the list? Ribs.

“From Rendezvous in Memphis (they’ll FedEx it to you),” reads the list. “Have dry ice ready.”

MEMernet: Naked Running Man, Witchcraft Rituals on LetGo

A round-up of Memphis on the World Wide Web.

Pastor Who?

An alleged sex tape of Arkansas pastor David Wilson exploded hilariously all over Twitter Friday.

Memphis got pulled into the party as many mistook him for talk show host Thaddeus Matthews. But one internet sleuth solved the crossover calamity with a side-by-side comparison of Matthews (left) and Wilson (right).

Posted to Twitter by Nicator.

Tenne-Kong

Reddit user vexillology posted this modified Tennessee state flag to show support for Hong Kong last week.

Results may vary

LetGo is a digital yard sale app for old mowers, rims, and smartphones. Last week, you could also find “witchcraft rituals for various things” in a post by Michael Bock.

“Need a boost of luck?” reads the post. “Need some healing energy? Need that promotion? My coven will gladly help in any way we can. Results may vary.”

Naked Running Man

Nextdoor boiled over Sunday with a report of a “naked man running down Madison Ave.”

“New TV show: Buff City Law,” wrote a Nextdoor user.
