Instagram bot @elonmusksjet tracks Elon Musk’s jet and logged a quick visit here Sunday evening, likely checking in on the mysterious goings-on at xAI’s new supercomputer.

Not mysterious, however, were the details of the flight, according to the bot: 1,025 gallons of jet fuel used, at a cost of about $5,742, and 11 tons of CO2 emissions.

“Literally every freak in Memphis is at Black Lodge tonight,” wrote Flyer film and TV editor Chris McCoy of the venue’s final event Saturday.

Spicy

Posted to Facebook by Memphis Police Department

Memphis Police Department arrested a 15-year-old male last week on charges of vandalism between $2,500 and $10,000. The alleged “Spicy” tagger was prolific in the I-240/Poplar area. He even taunted the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), which had apparently covered his previous tags, with the message, “Thx 4 ur service TDOT,” and a heart.

A February Truth Social post by former president and convicted felon Donald Trump resurfaced last week. We’re not sure exactly why, but we thought you ought to see it.

Trump claimed people have said he looks like Elvis Presley for years, posted a photo of himself and Presley side by side, and asked his followers what they thought.

Deli or Young Ave?

Over the weekend, Memphis Reddit users debated the only real question: Do you call the Young Avenue Deli “The Deli” or “Young Ave.”? Results were mixed with younger folks mostly opting for “Young Ave.” Older respondents and Cooper-Youngers largely preferred “The Deli.”

We’ve seen a lot of photos of Sputnik over the years but maybe never one so dramatic as Danielle Lewis posted to the Memphis In Pictures, Places and People Facebook group last week.

Kinfolk

Josh Clark started a GoFundMe for Kinfolk restaurant last week after a water main busted and flooded their shop.

“They are gonna be out of business for a little bit so they won’t have any cash flow to come in and help cover employee cost,” Clark said. “In a city where all of our favorite restaurants are closing down, let’s show our support to our favorite spot.”

As of late last week, the GoFundMe had raised $1,380 of its $2,500 goal.

Damn

The Damn Weather of Memphis can’t stop messing with AI. He recently asked it to write a weather forecast for the city.

“Yo, listen up, cuh!” it began. “It’s finna be hot as hell out here, mane. On god, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., it’s gon’ feel like 112 degrees. Not gonna lie, fam, it’s serious out here.”

Nextdoor user Roger Williams asked for name recommendations for the tricky-to-spot dog in the above photo. Some of the top names were “Pebbles,” “Camo,” “Waldo,” and “Rocky.”

Fly Mud Island

Change has always been in the mix for Mud Island, as proven by a photo shared to the Memphis In Pictures, Places And People Facebook group last week.

As it enters a new phase with the Baron Von Opperbean immersive experience, it’s fun to remember the island was once home to an airstrip. It was used, largely, by business travelers who would land and take a pontoon ferryboat across Wolf River Harbor to Downtown destinations.

Mutants

Memphis summertime headed back into familiar “excessive heat” territory this week. It also opened up the human buffet for our beloved mosquitos. Let the grousing commence.

Training in Memphis

Comedian Jackson Maness posted two videos to Instagram showing how to train for both sides of violent crime in Memphis.

“Don’t shoot,” he says, raising a barbell to show his hands like a victim. “Please. I have a family. Here’s my wallet. Take my keys, too.”

Training like a criminal, he uses a stretch band for his trigger finger. He then uses a kettle bell and draws it like a gun and yells, “Stop, bitch!”

“We just secured $393+ MILLION through the [Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act] to fully replace the I-55 bridge connecting America through #Memphis,” Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Memphis) posted late last week. “As @POTUS would say, it’s a ‘Big **** Deal’! And it sure is — it’s likely the largest single investment the federal government has ever made in Memphis.”

Cohen and iPhone

In a new political ad, Corey Strong looked back to 2007 when the iPhone was introduced and Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Memphis) was first elected to Congress, noting that Cohen had been around “longer than the iPhone.”

“What have we seen?” Strong asks. “Do we have the infrastructure we need to succeed? Have we seen the growth that neighboring areas have seen? No.”

The Zoo

Juicy J’s new album Memphis Zoo (released last week) features amazing cover art (right). Sharks swim in a glass Pyramid aquarium. A grizzly bear plays basketball. A masked-up giraffe holds a ring of keys, promising escape.

Many Memphians reacted to the Memphis City Council’s recent hikes on taxes and fees with one question: Why are residents getting charged more while we hand out tax cuts to businesses all the time? Daniel Duckworth took this question to Nextdoor.

“Shelby County raised the wheel tax in hopes of bringing in $17 million,” he wrote. “In the meantime, businesses got $41 million in tax breaks in the county. We’re giving large businesses and corporations welfare and guaranteed income.”

Jay Limbaugh said, “The Memphis market is not as attractive as Nashville or Knoxville. We have to bribe companies to come and invest. Simple.”

Some suggested we have to use corporate handouts because our labor pool sucks. Other neighbors wondered if the city could save money with a consolidated government, like Nashville. One just wanted her yard waste picked up on time.

Nice

Amid the death and destruction you’ll find if you ever search YouTube for “Memphis,” you also occasionally find just some really nice love letters to the city from outsiders. Travel vloggers Adam and Madalyn visited recently; ate barbecue at Cozy Corner, Central BBQ, and The Bar-B-Q Shop; and wandered around Bass Pro and Beale Street. Nighttime Visitor

West Overton Crossing neighbor John G. said he heard a loud knock on his door one night last week. His Ring camera showed nothing. So he peeked outside but saw no one.

“I had this weird feeling like someone was watching me from across the street so I snapped a photo [above],” he said.

A tech-savvy Nextdoor user Bobby Anderson downloaded the photo, adjusted the image settings, and revealed this:

In the adjusted image, you can just make out the figure of a person who seems to be in all black standing on the porch across the street. John G. had not posted an update on the situation as of press time. So it remains just … creepy.

“Drinking Holes”

UK tourist and bar enthusiast Ryan Hutchinson posted on Facebook last week that “Alex’s Tavern and Earnestine and Hazel’s in Memphis, TN delivered the goods. Unpretentious, real drinking holes.”
