The New Pavo Salon in Midtown with Scot Robinson

Pavo Salon has settled into a prominent retail corner in Cooper-Young, reviving a former boutique space into their second salon in Memphis. Here’s a glimpse of the renovation as we get to know Pavo co-owner Scot Robinson even further.

“Memphis is seeing some good growth currently and we are excited to be a part of that! I began my career in Midtown so it was a coming home, so to speak.”
-Scot Robinson about the decision to open a location in Midtown.

[jump]

For over 15 years, Pavo Salon has served the Memphis community. The long-standing location in Laurelwood Shopping Center has been the base for their continued growth, but Scot contributes Pavo’s success more to their “intention,” developing great relationships for strong retention in guests as well as staff.

“The best compliment we receive is how friendly, helpful, educated, and committed our staff is and that our environment leaves you feeling warm and relaxed,” Scot continues.

The Pavo brand has aligned with a purpose for a “sustainable, socially responsible culture,” understanding that they can make a positive impact in seemingly small ways.

“From the service we provide, business decisions we make, recycling, the products we purchase, cleaning products and light bulbs, technology, training, campaigns for clean water (we have raised around $40,000), notable community drives, and the small decisions that we make in our everyday life leads to having a greater impact in what we do and who we are!”

Another layer to their quality of service is the longtime decision to be an Aveda lifestyle salon. Co-branded with Aveda, Pavo is committed to using only Aveda in their services and performing at a higher level to achieve this partnership. The retail component of Pavo strengthens this idea of being a lifestyle salon, bringing in products such as make-up and skincare. All these things have helped them grow with some recognition, most notably as one of the Top 200 salons as voted by Salon Today.

The idea of a second location was a natural step in expanding their brand.

“We have talked about expanding our brand for a long time. As they say, timing is everything. Memphis is seeing some good growth currently and we are excited to be a part of that! I began my career in Midtown so it was a coming home, so to speak. We have had a wonderful influx of new guests and look forward to establishing new relationships in yet another community in Memphis!” says Scot.

Co-owner Shawn McGhee, a longtime Midtown resident, describes Midtown as “the creative nucleus of Memphis.”
“There’s such a unique energy and diversity to the people that choose to live here and we wanted to be a part of that. Pavo is a natural fit during this time of growth and expansion of Midtown. As more upscale retailers are moving in, we thought this was perfect timing for expanding our business into this area,” he says.

The exterior of the building had been previously clad in wood slats that was complemented with a bright interior. The interior design was something both Scot and Shawn were involved in.

“Shawn and I both love to design. We knew most of what we wanted on the front end. Shawn is more the spacial person, whereas I tend to love color, texture and finishing details. We sought out the help of Graham Reese Design Group to help put all the elements together.” Scot explains.

“Scot and I wanted a space that was as functional as it was beautiful. Because this is such a visual profession, we knew that we needed plenty of natural light so that our team can perform their best work. We also have removed the traditional front desk that most hair salons have. We did this because we wanted to remove the barrier between the guest and the employee. We want to be sure that our guests have a very interactive, personal experience with each of our employees,” Shawn adds.

With the sleek tile floors that Scot decided on before they even had the space, the nicely lit interior sets the stage for the true focus of the space – helping clients look their best. Drawing inspiration from various mediums such as nature, runways, fashion magazines, and architecture, Scot adds in a bit of an edge to his classic style.

“I’m always willing to create something new for a client but that doesn’t always mean the latest ‘Pinterest’ hair,” he says.

Shawn has been Scot’s business partner since 2000 but has known him his entire career in the industry.
“Scot is unique in that he is an accomplished hairstylist and a natural leader, which in this industry is rare. Being a good hairstylist and a good leader are two separate skill sets entirely, and Scot can do both with such ease. Scot is very good at identifying people’s strengths and using those strengths to support the business,” Shawn says.

This particular day I visited, Scot was working on highlighting, cuts, and styling for clients, one he’s had for a client for 24 years.

“Micah has this beautiful natural golden copper hair that loses its vibrancy in the fall and winter. I chose to do a hair painting technique with a lighter golden shade and a medium copper. Hair painting is a surface technique that can allow very natural looking color with a bit of a lived-in effect. I like the artistry of a free-handed technique, it allows you to be as subtle or as bold as you wish,” Scot explains.

Scot and Pavo is also gearing up for their 5th year as a sponsor for Memphis Fashion Week. Abby Phillips, Director of Memphis Fashion Week, noted that Pavo has been the exclusive hair sponsor since year 1.

“Pavo Salon was a natural fit when I started Memphis Fashion Week in 2012. The creativity that Scot and Shawn bring to the table is like none other. They make our models feel comfortable and make my job of putting on the shows much easier. I know that Pavo Salon will create beautiful looks that make a huge impact on the runway,” says Abby.

“I sit in on model selections. I have met with emerging designers to discuss the look they want to achieve and worked with major designers to ensure their vision is told. We have had such a wonderful experience working with Abby Phillips and all those connected to this event. Abby truly respects our team’s creativity and allows us to push our boundaries each and every year. We look forward to another successful year!” Scot exclaims.

Memphis Fashion Week’s 2015 Emerging Memphis Designers

This year’s selection of emerging Memphis designers presented by Memphis Fashion Week

On Friday, March 27th, these 10 designers will present their custom designs at this year’s Memphis Fashion Week (MFW), after months of designing and crafting for that significant moment – a chance to share their hard work with the Memphis fashion community. The experience will also help them explore their craft and even shape how they see their future in fashion.

“The designers this year have a very clear vision of their design aesthetic, which has been fun to see brought to life through fabric and construction,” says MFW Director Abby Phillips about the designers mentored through this year’s Emerging Memphis Designer Project (EMDP).

Proceeds from Memphis Fashion Week support this project by giving the selected designers the funds for materials and the one-on-one mentoring needed to navigate that process of bringing their vision to life. Here, each designer stands with a model wearing their spring/summer piece created specifically for this year’s runway.

The night of the show, the EMDP designs will be judged partially by a panel of judges and partially by Audience Choice. The judges will be designer Pat Kerr, musician Grace Askew, and costumer Bruce Bui. First place winners for the Singles and Mini Collections each receive a scholarship to the Continuing Education Fashion Design classes at Memphis College of Art, a gift card to online retailer Spoonflower to create custom-printed fabrics, and an automatic acceptance into the EMDP next year. Second place will receive a $50 gift card to online retailer Spoonflower to create custom-printed fabrics.

“Memphis Fashion Week is a wonderful opportunity for emerging and established industry professionals to share their creative insight, connect with other talented individuals,” says EMDP designer Maggie Dandridge. “It serves as a springboard for catapulting Memphis into mainstream fashion.”

A New Look for Memphis Fashion Week – The MFW Logo and Its Fashion Counterparts

Memphis Fashion Weekend launched in 2012, testing the waters of the Memphis fashion scene as a two-day engagement.

Over the last three years, the event has gained momentum, and this year, it officially transitions into Memphis Fashion Week

With this move comes a new logo, created by local firm Inferno

When selecting the shape of the logo mark, creative director Michael Overton sought a modular element that could build upon itself and thus feel kinetic, which helps communicate “how broad fashion is.”

[jump]

In the intentionally incomplete letterforms, the logo represents fashion “as a creative act, trying to reach a complete form,” suggests Michael. They hope the design will be used for years to come and still lend itself to be flexible across various uses and still be cohesive.

To strengthen the argument that the hexagon was the right choice for this fashion driven logo, I’ve collected a few already coveted accessories that use the hexagon, bold as a stand-alone shape and functional as it easily tessellates into a honeycomb pattern. I look forward to wearing my gold hexagon hoops to this year’s fashion week.

Style Session with Tara Skelley, Dilettante Collection

tara-01.png

Soon after winning an Emerging Memphis Designer Project (EMDP) Audience Choice Award at Memphis Fashion Week (MFW) for the second year in a row, designer Tara Skelley took the hint and made her mini-collection available to wear off the runway and, conceivably, off to the glamorous places where her tropical prints were destined to be.

One of the key prizes offered to EMDP winners is access to fashion education through a scholarship to the Memphis College of Art fashion program. With her clothing line Dilettante Collection, Tara essentially has launched a serious career in fashion, fulfilling the intent of Memphis Fashion Week in nurturing new talent.

Here, Tara speaks more about her win and models the summery pieces in her collection, showing that her designs are a true extension of her own personal style — “feminine and polished but with a bold and eclectic twist.”

What new things have developed for you particularly in fashion from the 2014 MFW EMDP mini-collection win?
During the preparation for MFW 2014, it occurred to me that if I was taking the time and energy to illustrate my own fabric designs, source materials, and create patterns, then why not make my designs available to a larger audience. The positive feedback I received from the MFW experience provided me with the confidence and motivation to actually pursue it and shortly thereafter, I launched the web store, www.DilettanteCollection.com!

tara-05.png

tara-06.png

tara-07.png

You said the inspiration for this year’s MFW runway collection came from a vintage postcard. Can you describe this postcard a little more in detail and how it translated to the collection? (See a glimpse of the postcard in Look 2 above.)
Last fall, I discovered a vintage postcard at a favorite bookstore in Seaside, Florida. I was designing the mini-collection at the time and the image helped to crystallize what I wanted the collection to be: breezy and bohemian, but with a touch of sophisticated vintage glamour. I’ve also been inspired by some of my favorite travel destinations. In fact, every piece in the collection is named after a beach locale, many of which I’ve been to and a couple that are still on the “to-travel” list.

Have you added any new pieces to the collection since showing at MFW?
Yes, I added several more pieces to round out the Spring/Summer Collection but all of the additional pieces were created using either the signature prints or complimentary fabrics to maintain a cohesive feel. The St. Lucia Maxi, Hamptons Crop, Capri Skirt, Key West Dress, Palm Springs Party Dress are all new pieces not previously shown on the MFW runway. I even added pillow covers and iPhone cases to the mix, so there’s something for everyone.

tara-08.png

tara-09.png

tara-10.png

You also won the same award in 2013. How much feedback did you get from people who saw your collection last year and/or this year? Did any of that feedback get incorporated in your designs?
Last season, I think people connected with the fact that the pieces offered a dash of something interesting while still being very wearable, so I definitely tried to incorporate that into the current season. I also wanted to have a greater mix of special occasion pieces and casual pieces that could easily be incorporated into any wardrobe. But at the end of the day, I design what I personally would like to wear and focus on finding lovely fabrics and creating a beautiful fit.

How did you first get involved in MFW?
I have volunteered with MFW since its inception. I first participated as a member of the Advisory Board and I was very excited to be a part of creating a dynamic event that would benefit the arts community while being an exciting and cosmopolitan event for Memphians to attend. MFW is a fabulous vehicle that connects the fashion community and as I’ve transitioned into designing, I’ve been privileged to meet so many local talented individuals from stylists and models to photographers and designers.

Is fashion your full-time job or do you have other ventures?
I’m currently “retired” from my former career as a CPA. I work in events part-time, but for the past few months, my primary focus has been navigating the ins and outs of small business ownership and entrepreneurism.

What’s your typical day like? Do you spend a good bit of time in a studio environment to design or create any pieces?
There is no such thing as a typical day for me! Some days I might do a lot of work at the computer working on sales, marketing, and finances, and other days, I might be sewing fanatically at 2 am! When designing, I like to go someplace new and fresh to find inspiration and to free myself from distractions. But I also consistently spend a lot of time in a studio environment actually bringing the ideas to life, and that’s the gratifying part.

What type of woman are you designing for?
The Dilettante Collection client is a cosmopolitan and vivacious woman who is constantly expanding her horizons. She enjoys mixing styles and colors with confidence to create her own unique and sophisticated look.

Any summer style tips to share?
Memphis humidity reigns supreme, so dressing for the heat is key. I love to wear breezy and feminine shapes, like a flowy maxi skirt, and stick to natural fibers that breathe like linen, cotton, or silk. Overly styled makeup, hair, and jewelry looks heavy and contrived, so lighten up for summer! But primarily, embrace the fashion freedom that summer inherently permits; it’s the perfect excuse to wear bold prints and experiment with new silhouettes.

Favorite local shops?
I love vintage, so I’m always prowling around Midtown and East Memphis estate sales, as well as Hoot & Louise, to find pieces to incorporate into a current look. I also love one-of-a-kind pieces with a story, so I enjoy scouting out accessories from other local designers. The lines carried by Southern Couture are fantastic and it’s always a breeze to find a quality and interesting piece there as well.

Is the floral dress (Look 3) a new piece you are working on? Is it a glimpse into the theme of the next collection?
Yes, the floral dress is a new, one-of-a-kind piece from the Dilettante Custom Collection created from a sourced vintage fabric. I love creating unique pieces for special occasions! But I’m a consistent fan of florals and envision creating new fabric designs inspired by vintage finds with a modern color palette. So stay tuned for Spring 2015!
