Memphis Flyer writers won nine Green Eyeshade Awards, given annually to the best journalism in the South. The Flyer‘s sister publication, Memphis Magazine won three awards.
The Green Eyeshade Awards go to journalists in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia, all competing for top honors in daily newspaper, non-daily newspaper, television, and magazine categories.
The contest is run by the Society of Professional Journalists, which announced that there were more than 500 entries this year. Flyer winners were:
Jackson Baker: 1st place Politics Reporting, “Lowery’s Breakfast Boner” and other columns
Toby Sells: 1st place for Courts and the Law Reporting, “The Brady Bunch”
Chris Davis: 1st place Criticism for various theater columns
Bianca Phillips: 1st place, Feature Writing “Transgender in Memphis”
Eileen Townsend: 2nd place for Criticism, “Fifty Shades of Grey and art columns
Toby Sells: 2nd place Public Service Journalism, “We Can’t Drive … I-55”
Jackson Baker: Flyer 2nd place General News Reporting, “Into The Sunset”
Toby Sells: 3rd place Investigative Reporting, “The Urban Child Investment”
Chris Davis: 3rd place Feature Writing, “Godless in Memphis”
Memphis Magazine winners were:
Shara Clark: 2nd place Feature Writing, “Inside the Hotel Pontotoc”
Michael Finger: 3rd place Feature Writing, “The John Wilkes Booth Mystery”
