Time Warp Drive-In: Motorcycle Madness

Tonight’s August edition of the Time Warp Drive In, Summer avenue’s biggest summer event, kicks off with a wedding. Kim Stanford and Coley Smith from Tupelo, Mississippi will say their vows at 7 PM, with Mike McCarthy, the Time Warp Drive-In empresario, presiding.

After the nuptials, the evening of motorcycle movies begins with the genre’s biggest classic, Easy Rider. Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda’s transcontinental epic captured the zeitgeist of its era like few films have before or since. But often lost amidst the Baby Boomer nostalgia is the fact that Easy Rider is a fantastic, and hugely influential, movie. Not only did it make a movie star out of Jack Nicholson, but it also has the first, and still greatest, use of “The Weight” in a film.

The second film of the evening is 1953’s The Wild One starring Marlon Brando. Another hugely influential film, The Wild One was made at a time when Brando was one of the hottest properties in Hollywood. The same year he was playing the sensitive juvenile delinquent Johnny Strabler opposite Lee Marvin, he also played Marc Antony in Julius Caesar opposite James Mason and Sir John Gielgud. The film is the iconic template for the motorcycle movie, and nobody ever wore a Perfecto leather jacket better than Brando.

Made three years before Easy Rider, The Wild Angels was Peter Fonda’s first foray into motorcycle movies. Directed by Roger Corman, the film’s high point is a confrontation between biker gang leader Fonda and a judge, which has become one of the most sampled moments in movie history.

Bike Night

Easy, rider: If you miss this Wednesday’s Bike Night on Beale, there’s always next week. Bike Night is every Wednesday, from 5 to 11 p.m., through the summer.

The Beale Street Merchants Association created the evening to allow enthusiasts to bond and show off their rides. As many as 1,200 bikes of all shapes and colors line the street, offering passersby a virtual art gallery of the modern motorcycle.

Now, this is an event that even the famously cranky Paul Teutul of TV’s American Chopper could get revved up about.

Elvis 30th Anniversary Bike Being Auctioned on eBay

After selling the first 29 “Elvis Presley Signature Motorcycles,” Harley-Davidson and Elvis Presley Enterprises put the 30th bike up for auction on December 8th.

The bikes, which recreate the personalized 1957 black Harley that Presley once owned, were created in honor of the 30th anniversary Elvis’ death this past August.

Only 30 bikes were created. Each motorcycle retails at $57,888, but the first one sold for a whopping $100,000 ($40,000 of that was donated to the American Diabetes Association).

The eBay auction will close on January 8th, Elvis’ birthday. Proceeds from the auction will benefit Presley Place, a transitional housing provider for homeless families in Memphis.

Saturday Is E-Day on eBay

A few months ago, if you couldn’t come up with the $50,000+ to buy one of the limited edition Harley-Davidsons specially tricked out to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley, here’s your last chance.

Bruce Rossmeyer is CEO of 13 Harley dealerships, including Graceland Harley-Davidson and the world’s largest H-D dealership in Daytona, Florida. Earlier this summer, he commissioned 30 FLH model Harleys with custom paintjobs and other features designed to re-create as closely as possible the 1957 FLH Harley once owned by the King of Rock-and-Roll. Each bike was specially numbered, and 1-29 have already been sold.

The final motorcyle, number 30 in the series, will be auctioned on eBay on December 8th. The closing date of the auction will be January 8th — Elvis’ birthday. Proceeds will benefit Presley Place, which offers transitional housing for homeless families in Memphis.

One the auctions gets under way, you can track it on eBay by searching for “Elvis motorcycle.”
