Bonnaroo’s Sweet 16

aLIVECoverage

Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, celebrates its Sweet 16 this year as the festival opens this Thursday, June 7 and runs through Sunday, June 10. That teenage energy is somewhat evident in the line-up, which, unlike years past, lacks an impressive veteran rock band headliner.

The 2018 lineup — headlined by The Killers, Muse, and Eminem — may appeal more to Millennials and Gen-Xers without much to offer for older Baby Boomer festival-goers. In recent years, the festival has wrapped up with performances by Paul McCartney, U2, Phish, Elton John, and the remaining members of the Grateful Dead. But, Eminem will close out the main stage on Saturday, promoting his new album, Revival, which has been widely criticized as a mediocre release that fails to adapt to the changing sounds of hip-hop. Long-time fans will surely be hoping Eminem plays plenty of his late ’90s classics, as he did at his last Roo performance in 2011. Andrew Jorgensen

The Killers close out the festival on Sunday. They’ll likely perform works from 2017’s Wonderful Wonderful, but they’ll certainly get the most fan reaction from 2004 breakout hits, like “Mr. Brightside” and “Somebody Told Me.” Andrew Jorgensen

Other lineup highlights include indie folk rockers Bon Iver, pop-country crossover artist Sheryl Crow, rapper Future, emo rockers Paramore, and electronic acts Bassnectar, The Glitch Mob, and Kaskade. Click here for the full line-up.

Those looking for more of a rave experience than a rock festival can dance the night away at the Kalliope stage, featuring both well-known and obscure DJs spinning into the wee hours of the morning.

Bonnaroo is so much more than music though. The festival offers plenty in the way of cultural activities, and this year they’re pushing new “Campground Experiences” at plazas located across the general campgrounds. Family game nights, yoga, puppet-making workshops, and even a Roo Run 5K are among the highlights, along with the old standards — a water park, a Ferris wheel, a food truck court, a craft brew tent, and more.

Biking in Style – Emmye Walker

I’ve been scoping Memphis for quite some time to find great street style incorporating bicycles, so I was thrilled to find the first candidate. Biking around the city in style is downtown resident Emmye Walker making a delivery of her latest jewelry designs to Muse Inspired Fashion. Emmye’s look works in comfortable sneakers well with her vibrant colored dress and straw hat. It’s a challenge to bike comfortably and look chic. Emmye pulls off both.

Meet the Artist Behind Vashti’s Jewels – Q & A with Carole Manley

If you’ve visited MUSE boutique downtown, you might have noticed a local line of handmade jewelry they feature – Vashti’s Jewels. In fact, a couple of the heirloom quality necklaces from that line were included in the Style Sessions Favorite Finds list earlier this year. Today, we have the pleasure of meeting the artist behind Vashti’s Jewels – Carole Manley. Carole’s attention to the jewels she incorporates, the decorative fasteners, and special crafting techniques are what make the pieces such great heirlooms.

See some of her current pieces below, perfect gift ideas for Mother’s Day.

How did get started in jewelry design?

I have been interested in stones since I was a young girl. My mother was a diamond buyer for DeBeers and she and I would go to diamond auctions together. It was fascinating to me then and now that such beautiful crystals were produced by the earth. I incorporate semi-precious stones in all of my jewelry. Jewelry making techniques that I use are wire wrapping, bead knotting, and intricate beading. I like to work with copper, sterling silver and gold filled/plated wire, and silk thread. I learned my jewelry making skills from Adele Gomero, and I am very particular about quality workmanship.

How did you decide on the name of Vashti’s Jewels?
Queen Vashti is a Biblical name from the Old Testament book of Esther. Queen Vashti was beautiful, independent, mysterious, and true to her convictions. I envision Queen Vashti as having many precious jewels. I want whoever is wearing or giving my jewelry to feel the spirit of Queen Vashti.

Tell us about your Memphis.

I love the flavor of Memphis. I enjoy the adventure of frequent travel, however, it is good to come home to Memphis.  I have lived in Memphis most of my life, and for the past 12 years, I have had the excitement of living in downtown Memphis. I love to go to the Orpheum, Grizzlies games — My favorite player is Mike Conley, and I love his mother’s taste in jewelry — and visit museums.

What are some of your signature pieces?
You can find my signature ” Pics and Pearls” earrings at STAX Museum. I do take custom orders for “Pics and Pearls” earrings.  MUSE Inspired Fashion also carries my necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.  I have just started beading bracelets and earrings. This technique is fun, but very time consuming. I enjoy visiting MUSE to see all the new fashions and creating strong statement jewelry pieces to compliment the fashions. Or maybe the fashions compliment my jewelry designs! My earrings will soon return to Delta Groove Yoga Studio*.

“I am very grateful for all the many positive moments in my life. It is rewarding to create and design jewelry art, and know that someone selected my jewelry to add beauty to her/his life.” – Carole

Favorite Find – Handcrafted Necklaces from Vashti’s Jewels

When seeking great finds, I try to look past the trends and find things that will be adored for years and years. Such is the case with Vashti’s Jewels by local artist Carole Manley. She handcrafts each piece from semi-precious stones, including stones that she finds from her international travels.

“I seek the unusual and rare finds. I have been designing all of my life. My mother was a diamond buyer for DeBeers Diamonds, and her spirit has been my true inspiration.” Carole says, also giving credit to the encouragement of Lisa Doss, owner of Muse Inspired Fashion, one of the select places that carries Vashti’s Jewels.

Shown here are two necklaces found at Muse that, for me, would surely become heirloom pieces.

Sister Swap

We also ran into Majestic Grille owner Deni Reilly last night, looking just as cute as ever. I always comment on her jewelry, but I won’t here because, well, have you seen the Orla Kiely bag?

I love how the strap of her bag — in the company’s signature pattern — echoes the color of her top from Muse.

The white jacket she got out of her sister’s closet in D.C. — “It’s vintage,” she says.

I had to ask: Does your sister know you took her vintage jacket? B/c I’ve got sisters. And I know that sometimes you get things from them, and sometimes you just take them. (Or maybe that’s just me.)

“She knows,” she says. “I brought her a whole bag of shoes. It was a wardrobe swap. You’ve got to do those things when you have a sister.”
