Music Video Monday: Mojo Medicine Machine

Music Video Monday got that mojo working.

Mojo Medicine Machine‘s motto is “Maximum rock ‘n roll with a groove.” Their new album Remedy for the Soul was recorded at Royal Studios with Boo Mitchell behind the boards and guest shots from folks like Rev. Charles Hodges, Steve Selvidge, and Jim Dandy. The first single, “Lay It Down,” is a classic blues rock stomp which gets right to the heart of the matter.

The video, directed by Ken Webb, gives you a peek inside the Royal tracking room, and a tour of Beale Street for all you quarantine bunnies who miss the Memphis nightlife. Get that vaccine and we can all be back there soon, rocking with the Machine! Let’s go to the tape:

Music Video Monday: Tony Manard

Music Video Monday is watching while the world burns.

I suspect we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg when it comes to art made in pandemic isolation. Tony Manard is one of the legion of Memphis musicians who have turned to recording new music to make sense out of the state of the world. The lyrics of “Watching Birds and Baking Bread” describe familiar activities to many people. “It’s kind of a flipside to the hopeful tune I did with Rice Drewry a few months ago, ‘Together Alone,'” says Maynard. “This one is about creating your bubble and how the world intrudes. It’s also about turning inward, creating and doing things for yourself. By the end of the track there is a racket of voices. The cadence under the end is police pushing protestors down Beale Street. They are striking their body armor with their batons.”

The cinematic video was created by director Vincent Manard. “We mostly shot it at our creative space on Lamar that we share with Nancy Apple and a few others,” says Tony Manard. “We kept it small and safe as we could. Vincent’s girlfriend Asayah is the protagonist. This one was different because the track actually evolved with the video. Usually the track is finished before we start a video. Vincent chose to limit his effects toolbox to what was available to silent film editors.”

Music Video Monday on Tuesday: Lukah

Music Video Monday is a day late, but no dolla short.

After taking MLK Day off, MVM is back with a hot new video from Lukah. The Memphis rapper’s self-produced new album When The Black Hand Touches You was released last Friday by FXCK RXP records. The lead single “Shutters” adds some lush strings to the lo fi MC’s gritty sound.

For the video, Lukah tapped directors Joshua Cannon and Nate Packard of 143 Productions. The etherial images see Lukah and his crew bathed in smoke to reflect the single’s swimmy sound. Check it out:

Music Video Monday on Tuesday: The Justus Brothers ft. Katrina Anderson

Music Video Monday is here to smooth the transition.

Hope you all had a happy Labor Day weekend, and were able to wind down a little bit from the constant bombardment of crazy we’ve been experiencing this year. Our video today is from the Memphis jazz combo The Justus Brothers. Their cover of CeeLo Green’s classic “Crazy”, impeccably interpreted by singer Katrina Anderson, hit the Billboard Smooth Jazz charts this summer. Now they’re here to make the beginning of your workweek a little smoother. Take it away, Katrina!

Music Video Monday: Blvck Hippie

Music Video Monday feels your pain.

Memphis Flyer writer Jesse Davis recently interviewed Josh Shaw of Blvck Hippie about recording “Bunkbed” at Sun Studios during the pandemic. “So many greats have been here. I hope we don’t suck,” said Shaw.

Good news: It doesn’t suck. Natalie Hawkins’ lyric video highlights the angst in “Bunkbed”, a song Afropunk called the “feel bad song of the summer.” But Shaw didn’t write the song, heavy with longing for an illusory better time, to bum you out. “Music is one of the things that can make everybody feel that everything is going to be okay,” he told Davis.

Music Video Monday: Stephen Chopek

Music Video Monday got junk in the trunk.

Low-fi music video auteur Stephen Chopek is no stranger to Music Video Monday. His new clip for “With Every Love Lost” introduces something new: A location shoot. Chopek and his stuffed bear friend explore the junkyard on a brilliant sunny day.

“‘With Every Love Lost’ is about shedding old skin when moving from one chapter of life to the next,” says Chopek. “We leave part of us behind, but always hold on to our true selves (and sometimes make a new friend along the way).”

Music Video Monday: Star & Micey

Music Video Monday’s got the right profile.

Memphis’ Star & Micey have a rocking new song called “Falls Apart.” Joshua Cosby says the tune predates the pandemic, having been recorded by Curry Weber at the band’s Superman Ranch, but feels newly relevant. “This song was written a while back when we were constantly on the road. And at this time in particular it really felt like the band was gonna break up — which was our world at that time. Thankfully, we all stuck it out and are still not just a band of musicians, but a band of brothers. Still writing, still recording, and still having “House Party” Zoom calls with each other.”

The video, shot during the quarantine by Stephen Hildreth, was directed by the band’s Nick Redmond from his new home in Philadelphia. It shows the band in silhouette, giving  a stark visual to reflect the apocalyptic lyrics.

Music Video Monday: Jeff Hulett

Hop on the Zoom call with Music Video Monday.

For many people, online videoconferencing has become the dominant form of human interaction during the pandemic. Jeff Hulett’s new video for “Pints & Quarts” was created by director Noah Glenn. The song is from the album Safe@Home, which Hulett and Jacob Church recorded remotely during the quarantine lockdown of March and April. The video captures the spirit of being alone together, connected by images and voices on the internet.
