MEMernet: Ja, Wes Health, and a Lost Car

Memphis on the internet.

Ja, Ja, Ja

Memphis sports fans shook their collective damn heads over the weekend. Grizzlies star Ja Morant flashed another gun in yet another online post, earning him yet another suspension from the NBA.

Wes Health

Posted to Facebook by Church Health

Church Health hopped on that Wes Anderson trend going around recently. A spot-on and funny Facebook Reel showed a perfectly framed employee getting on an elevator, admiring some art, and walking past, well, all kinds of things in true Anderson movie style.

Lost Car

Posted to Nextdoor by Lauren T.

“Good afternoon all!!” began the exclamation-point-laced Nextdoor post by Lauren T. last week. “This is incredibly embarrassing!!!! I seem to have misplaced my car on Monday [May 5th].”

The post perplexed neighbors, with many saying they could see the car sitting in the neighbor’s driveway.

MEMernet: The River, #Archie, and Lil Buck

Memphis on the internet.

Running Low

Storm chaser William Frogge flew drones over the Mississippi River recently to show just how low the water level has dropped. He said the levels are the lowest they’ve been since 2012 and are the third-lowest reading on record. Check his YouTube channel for more details.

#Archie

Posted to Nextdoor by Gertrude Moeller

Cooper-Youngers know Archie. The dog roams the neighborhood streets enough to merit his own hashtag on Nextdoor.

A September post about the dog was still rolling last week. The original post had Archie’s neighbor claiming no responsibility for the dog. The owner’s mother intervened to say the owner had done everything she could and that the Nextdoor posts were hurtful. Commenters offered solutions, got a bit nasty, and, then, called for kindness. Typical day in the Nextdoor neighborhood.

Lil Buck

Posted to Facebook by Memphis Jookin’

Memphis’ Lil Buck shows up in amazing and unlikely places. Last week, he shocked the crowd at a Hollywood Bowl performance by Pentatonix. Acting first as conductor, Buck turned to the crowd, did his thing, and was joined by beatboxer/cellist Kevin Olusola.

It left one commenter saying, “They better be careful the stage doesn’t collapse under all that #BlackExcellence!”

MEMernet: Athletes, Potholes, and a ‘Lil Bitty Penis’

Memphis on the internet.

Athlete Marketplace

Last week University of Memphis Athletics launched its official online marketplace on Opendorse for student athletes to sell their name, image, and likeness to brands, sponsors, and donors. For example, digital deals (tweets and such) with U of M softball outfielder Hannah Bassham (above) start at $10.

Pothole Police

Posted to YouTube by Jakely Adams

YouTuber Jakely Adams watched cars bottom out in a Memphis pothole last week in a video that racked up more than 12,600 views.

“Not the new Chrysler,” Adams moaned as the car (above) approached the “big ass” pothole. The car scraped inside the crater and Adams cried, “God dog! That is wild!”

‘Lil Bitty Penis’

Posted to Nextdoor by Crystal Hall

Grahamwood Heights neighbor Crystal Hall wanted justice last week. A man flashed her “with his penis” on the sidewalk in front of her house. She hoped neighbors on Nextdoor could get his car tag as she was filing a report on “the flasher man” for “pulling out that lil bitty penis.”

MEMernet: Music Fest, Mongo, and Mulan

Memphis on the internet.

Music Fest

Beale Street Music Festival brought thousands to Liberty Park this weekend for the first time in two years. But Nextdoor user Ben Nelson didn’t know.

“Lots of loud noise near the Liberty Bowl,” he wrote. “I didn’t think there were football games this time of year…. Anyone know what the heck is going on??”

Commenters answered the question many times, complained about the noise, complained they weren’t notified of the event, complained about the complainers, and, of course, complained about the redesign of Tom Lee Park.

Tweet of the Week

Posted to Twitter by @MayorMongo

“I will be announcing my full intentions on buying MySpace tomorrow,” tweeted Mayor Prince Mongo.

Big Bad What?

Posted to Facebook By Mulan

News broke last week that a Nashville company bought Cooper-Young buildings now housing Mulan and Margaritas. Owners plan to install a Big Bad Breakfast restaurant where Mulan is now.

But Mulan responded on Facebook with this: “Big bad nothing but a sad rumor going around. Mulan isn’t going anywhere. Don’t you worry your pretty little heads.”

MEMernet: Famous Memphians, Grizzlies, and Digital Mysteries

Memphis on the internet.

Famous Memphians

Ryan Hailey — 2020’s Best of the MEMernet winner — dropped a new Memphis classic on his Ryan’s Shorts YouTube channel last week. It names dozens of famous Memphians, all in under two minutes:

“Al Green, B.B. King, Shannen Doherty, Penny, and Lil’ Penny … Drake’s dad, Disco Duck, Howlin’ Wolf, Saliva … Reggie White, Lil Wyte, Herman Cain pizza bites, half of MGMT.”

Fartlek

World got you down? Jim Eubanks had some ultra-specific advice on Nextdoor: Run a fartlek. It was something about brain chemicals, evolutionary biology, evolutionary psychology, pollution, waste, and alienation. As of press time, the only comment on the post got to the heart of it all: “What’s a fartlek?”

History Mysteries

Posted to memphislibrary.org

Historians with the Memphis Public Libraries need your help. They have Memphis photographs for the digital archive but can’t identify the people in them. Have a look at the Dig Memphis Collection and see if you can solve what they call Dig Memphis Mysteries.

MEMernet: Profanity, Young Dolph, and a “Non-Dimensional Church”

Memphis on the internet.

“Only In Memphis”

This Picasso of profanity peeled paint from the walls in a November TikTok video filmed in a Memphis McDonald’s drive-through. We can’t print much of the tirade and for us that’s saying something. But here’s one good insult, “you garbage-can-Burger-King-McDonald’s-eatin’-ass bitch.”

Posted to YouTube by Gucci Mane

DolphTube

YouTubers focused on last week’s arrest warrant for Justin Johnson (aka Straight Drop) for the shooting death of Memphis rapper Young Dolph.

Poetik Flakko said he called Johnson’s involvement weeks ago. Hookah Anonymous opined another Memphis rapper (who we won’t name here) was involved and now seems nervous. Kmoney and Kp, from IDENTIKAL, said 300 were arrested over the weekend to force cooperation with the investigation. Meanwhile, the video to Gucci Mane’s tribute, “Long Live Dolph,” has been viewed nearly 9 million times in two weeks.

Another Dimension

One Nextdoor poster recently asked where in town to find a “non-dimensional church,” in a hilarious typo. To Nextdoor’s credit, it took days and dozens of comments before anyone corrected it.

MEMernet: Frogs, Oranges, Duck, and the Little Rock La Quinta

Memphis on the internet.

Behind the Curtain

Here’s how it works: Memphis Zoo researchers issue a paper in the journal Conservation Science and Practice titled, “Post-release comparisons of amphibian growth reveal challenges with sperm cryopreservation as a conservation tool.” The zoo issues a press release headlined, “Memphis Zoo Research Team Finds Out How to Build a New Wild Population.” We present it here like, “Heh. Look. Frogs doin’ it.”

Orange ya?

Posted to Nextdoor by Martin Rosenblum

Martin Rosenblum caught this display of mandarin oranges at the Sanderlin Kroger last week.

Well, are you?

Posted to Nextdoor by Diane Martin

“Hi,” Diane Martin said on Nextdoor. “Are you missing this duck?”

Tweet of the Week

“If you think 3 floors of a swinger’s convention at the Little Rock La Quinta is a sight to behold, you, dear sir or madam, have not seen the side show of wonder and grotesquerie that is checkout time at aforementioned La Quinta,” tweeted Cory Branan.

MEMernet: Tricks for Treats, a Porch Pirate, and the TN GOP

Memphis on the internet.

Tricks for Treats

“I can’t believe someone actually had the gall to steal my entire candy bowl I left out for trick-or-treaters, even with my Ring camera being right there,” Evan Savage wrote on Nextdoor. “Be wary of the tricksters, the ghouls are out tonight :/”

Posted to Nextdoor by Shea Gabrielleschi

Same thing happened to Shea Gabrielleschi’s candy bowl.

Pilfered the Packages

Posted to Nextdoor by Katherine Ryan

Similarly, Katherine Ryan posted Ring-camera footage of a porch pirate pilfering packages.

How they Saw It

Tennessee House Republicans (@tnhousegop) tweeted Saturday, “The General Assembly has outlawed Covid-19 mandates in Tennessee. Last night, we chose FREEDOM over MANDATES. It’s a great day to be a Tennessean.”

MEMernet: Michael Myers, Old Couch/New Landmark, and an MPD Drop-Top

A roundup of Memphis on the World Wide Web.

Halloween Hitcher

Something is underway at a yard close to the corner of Young and East Parkway. New items — like a couch and lottery signs — have been arranged there, and more stuff arrives every day it seems. A neighbor there amped up the weird over the weekend apparently dressing like Michael Myers, holding a trick-or-treat bucket, and trying to hitch a ride.

Posted to Nextdoor by Helen Perkins

Old is new

“A new Memphis landmark was spotted today,” wrote Reddit user u/Stilekid.

Drop-Top Cop

This convertible Memphis Police Department car was spotted in Memphis sometime this weekend and posted to the Memphis Memes 901 Facebook group. It wracked up an astonishing 761 shares and comments that ranged from explanations (that it was a parade car or had been seized in civil forfeiture) to “That is so Memphis.”

MEMernet: Minecraft, Kroger, and Pooh Shiesty

Minecraftin’

Instagram user Eric Huber is recreating Rust Hall, the iconic building central to the former Memphis College of Art campus, in Minecraft. The whys of this project don’t matter at all. It’s simple internet genius.

Posted to Instagram by @erichber

Krogerin’

A Nextdoor Kroger bash is still burning after user Patti Ward complained last week that, after 30 years of shopping at the Union Avenue location, she’ll “never again” shop there.

The post racked up 229 comments. The discussion ranged from whether or not the issue was an issue at all, Big Brother, other Kroger locations, other stores, missing Seessel’s, and a proposed 30-day ban on bashing Kroger on Union. The post followed a March 15th post from Rita Baker calling the Union Kroger “the worst grocery store on the planet.”

Explainin’

This week YouTuber Memphis Newz broke down the confusion over rapper Pooh Shiesty’s recent diss of South Memphis, his own neighborhood.

“Sometimes when a rapper gets big, their neighborhood will turn against them,” Memphis Newz said. “A lot of the time, it’s the rapper’s fault because they’ll be doing some hoe-ass shit.”
