The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, October 14-20

The appeal of online concerts is not going anywhere, judging from the continued flow of live-streamed performances in and around Memphis. In the case of venues that are wired for webcasting their shows, the actual availability of the show online is at the discretion of individual artists. Many continue to opt for the virtual option, for musicians typically want to connect with fans no matter what the medium. Be sure to support them by tipping their online accounts.

The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, October 7-13

This week has an eclectic offering of online shows in store, from the burlesque of Velvetina Taylor to two concerts by the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. And, because this is Memphis, everything in between. Kudos to both Devil Train and Evil Rain (see the connection?) for their unflagging residencies at B-Side Memphis. Huzzah to the return of Dale Watson to his HQ at Hernando’s Hide-a-way. And bravo to solo artists like Richard Wilson who reliably keep the quiet moments more harmonious. The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, September 30 – October 6

Here comes October, and the fall chill can be so conducive to setting up a screen on the back deck and enjoying a concert. If you’re inclined to continue social distancing, Memphis has you covered. Some brave artists have taken up a permanent weekly residence online; some monthly; and some frequent those clubs that continue to prioritize online options. Don’t call it lock down, call it a staycation … a stay-safe-cation.

The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, September 2-8

The flow of virtual performance rolls on, and remember — all of it listed here happens in real time. While some venues and performers began streaming pre-recorded shows when the pandemic hit, The Flow has always been focused on the fact that there’s something a little special about a concert happening in the moment, whether in-person or online. All the audience, both on screens and face to face, joins with the performers themselves in not knowing just what will happen next. It’s a bit like the golden age of live television. Just keep in mind that by tuning in to your favorite online show, you’re living on the edge.

The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, August 26-September 1

Plenty of online music remains available, thanks to these stalwart clubs and artists who are committed to giving fans some socially distanced options. The Robert Allen Parker show – wherein his entire double LP, The River’s Invitation – will be performed live, should draw roughly half of the city, given the number of stellar cameos on his album. And you just might have a chance of seeing the spectacle from home. As always, be free with your online tipping, and help keep Memphis music flowing!

The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, April 22-28

As stages and restaurant patios open up in the idyllic days of April, the live-streamed music ecosystem remains vibrant in the Bluff City. Many venues, such as Hernando’s Hide-a-way and B-Side, have invested in online streaming technology and continue to offer that as an alternative, even as they host limited-capacity audiences. Even if you’re just watching from home, be sure to tip the bands generously.

REMINDER: The Memphis Flyer supports social distancing in these uncertain times. Please live-stream responsibly. We remind all players that even a small gathering could recklessly spread the coronavirus and endanger others. If you must gather as a band, please keep all players six feet apart, preferably outside, and remind viewers to do the same.

The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, March 25-31

There will be much fine music online this week, but perhaps the standout event will be tonight’s live-stream from Royal Studios, brought to us by the Take Me to the River Education Initiative and Martin Shore, director of the original documentary, Take Me to the River. The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, December 10-16

Mike Stanton

Tyler Keith

Now the nog really begins to flow, as Christmas music pops up more and more in the online concert universe. But for those who get enough festive tunes at the grocery store, there are plenty of non-holiday events as well, not least of which is the star-studded celebration of Arhoolie Records, the (non-local) roots music imprint that is much beloved by fans of the blues, country, Cajun, Latino, and other related genres. Mississippi bluesman Charlie Musselwhite is among the featured artists.
