W(TF)REG

#Rockbone started trending Tuesday morning after an official tweet from WREG News Channel 3, generated ostensibly to encourage viewers to use the station’s interactive weather radar, was loosed into the twitterverse with an attached link for pornhub.com/users/rockbone

We’re guessing somebody at WREG just got a new nickname.

And while we’re tuned into WREG, let’s take a quick look at a textbook example of how some easily made typos are more troublesome than others. Case in point, a WREG web package headlined “Rick Ross’ upcoming Memphis Madness performance stirs controversy.” As Fly on the Wall has previously noted, when you book apologetic rape-rapper Rick Ross, you book some baggage, which was the basic theme of the WREG story right up until the point where this happened: “Date tape is a huge problem on college campuses and often times goes unreported.”

Is “date tape” like duct tape? Or is it a mix of smooth jams by artists other than Rick Ross?

Memphis Vs. Philly

And the winner is … Philly. And that’s a good thing, we think. The first round of Gawker’s “America’s Ugliest Accent” contest pitted the Bluff City against the city of brotherly love, and Philly trounced us, 7,515 votes to 1,472. The Memphis accent was described as “delicately Southern.” Gawker further explained that the “Appalachian influence is present,” which means we sound country, but we don’t drop our Rs so we don’t sound like Foghorn Leghorn either. Notable examples of our “ugly” accent included in-demand actor/voiceover titan, Morgan Freeman.

Rick Ross Talks Love for Memphis, “Elvis Presley Blvd”

rick-ross-breakfast-club.jpg

Rick Rock seemingly shares a love and respect for Memphis.

The Grammy-nominated, platinum-selling artist has opened multiple Wing Stop restaurants in the city, creating numerous jobs for locals. In August, he was presented a key to Memphis by Mayor A C Wharton for his economic contributions to the community.

In September, the Miami-bred rap sensation delivered his Project Pat-featured song “Elvis Presley Blvd,” paying tribute to the historic strip.

During an interview with The Breakfast Club, Ross talked about his love for Memphis, helping bring more jobs to the city, his respect for Elvis Presley, and more.

Ross begins talking about Memphis at the 15:44 mark of the interview. Check it out below.

Key Party!

Controversial rape rapper/tasty wing provocateur Rick Ross was in Memphis last week expanding his Wing Stop franchise. To acknowledge the wingman’s success, Mayor A C Wharton presented him with a key to the city. Not to be outdone by a living person, deceased comedian Phyllis Diller (by way of her estate) put several city keys up for auction on eBay. Among them was this slickly designed key to the City of Memphis presented to Diller by former Mayor W. W. Herenton. It may or may not fit most ’90s-era Buicks. Diller’s key to Memphis sold for $250, more than three times the amount her keys to Chesaning, MI, and Havre De Grace, MD went for.

It’s a Sign

Did you hear about the night the lights went out on Beale? And manhole covers blew up? And men experienced explosions in their “manties”? The Green Beetle documented it in this sign.

The other side of the Beetle’s board announced a truly special promotion.

Grammy nominated, platinum-selling rapper Rick Ross recently opened his fourth Wingstop location in the Memphis metropolitan area. The latest restaurant is stationed in Bartlett (2839 Bartlett Blvd).

“We’re excited to open our doors and give Bartlett the best made-to-order wings on the planet,” Ross said in a press statement. “We’ve got a huge fan base here, and I’m excited to show my love for the brand by bringing Wingstop to the community. We invite wing fanatics in the area to stop in and enjoy the food.”

Aside from the new Bartlett location, Ross currently owns and operates three other Wingstop restaurants in the Memphis area. The three other restaurants are located at 7706 Winchester Road, 4697 Poplar Avenue, and 182 Goodman Road West. He’s prepping to open a fifth location at 1619 Union in Midtown this summer.

Rick Ross first brought attention to his love for Wingstop on his song “MC Hammer.” On the track, he spits, ”She thinking Phillipe’s, I’m thinking Wingstop/Fiending lemon pepper, I got my thing cocked.”

Ross has a multi-unit, multi-state deal with Wingstop. He owns and operates multiple Wingstop locations in other parts of Tennessee as well as Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Wingstop was founded in 1994 and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas. There are currently more than 625 restaurants across the U.S., Mexico, Russia and Singapore. Wingstop offers classic and boneless wings in 10 different sauces including Original Hot, Cajun, Atomic, Mild, Teriyaki, Lemon Pepper, and Garlic Parmesan.

Wingstop of Bartlett will be open from 11 a.m. to midnight daily. For more information on the restaurant, call 901-213-0130.
