Protect Your Personal Information

According to the Federal Trade Commission, a new case of identity theft occurs every 22 seconds, and nearly 33 percent of Americans have faced some type of identity theft attempt. Identity theft occurs when a criminal uses your personal information to commit fraud, typically for financial gain. Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take to avoid being a victim of identity theft. 

1. Sign up for an identity theft protection service. 

While an identity theft service can’t prevent identity theft, it can promptly alert you to suspicious activity and help you recover any damages. For a monthly fee, these services monitor your credit reports, social media activity, financial accounts, medical information, and more in order to identify suspicious activity. 

2. Use strong passwords. 

Choose strong passwords that are difficult to guess, change your passwords often, and resist the urge to assign the same password to every account. That way, if one account is hacked, other accounts are still protected. Also, while it may seem obvious, don’t keep a list of passwords in an unsecured location. 

3. Enable multifactor authentication. 

Multifactor authentication offers an extra layer of password security. It requires that you provide another piece of data to gain access to your account, in addition to your password. For example, your bank may send a PIN via text to your phone number on file. Whenever possible, enroll in multifactor authentication. That way, even if someone learns your password, he/she won’t be able to access your account. 

4. Monitor your accounts. 

One of the best ways to quickly identify fraudulent transactions is by consistently monitoring your accounts. At least twice a week, log into your various accounts to review recent transactions. Also, consider establishing banking alerts to notify you of any unauthorized or suspicious activity. 

5. Protect your mail. 

It’s not just your online data that’s at risk. Hard copy documents also contain valuable personal data that can be used by fraudsters. That’s why it’s important to promptly pick up your mail and shred all statements and documents before putting them in the trash. 

6. Review your credit reports. 

Each of the major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) allows consumers to access one free report a year. Take advantage of this opportunity to check your credit reports and make sure there are no surprises or errors.

7. Maintain security software. 

Your internet-enabled devices should be equipped with strong, updated security software that regularly checks for suspicious and harmful activity. Make sure your software includes firewalls, anti-virus protection, and intrusion detection. Never connect to the internet without strong security software in place. 

8. Keep your operating system and software up to date. 

Software and operating system updates often include security fixes, which is why it’s important to enable automatic updates on all devices. You should also be using a well-respected internet browser, such as Chrome or Firefox, as they’re more likely to be regularly updated with the latest security protections. 

9. Never click on suspicious emails. 

If you receive an email that looks suspicious, it probably is. Resist the urge to click any links, and never provide personal information over email. 

If you receive an email regarding your finances that appears to be from a financial institution, the IRS or another reputable organization, call the toll-free number of that institution (the one listed on the company’s website, not a phone number in the suspicious email) to verify the email’s authenticity before you provide any information.  

10. Fully wipe old electronics. 

Even if you delete files from old computers, they can still be recovered by tech-savvy fraudsters. Before donating old electronics, use an overwriting software to fully wipe all personal data.

MATA demos protective shields for drivers

The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) is demoing a new security measure meant to keep drivers and passengers safe.

The agency will introduce bus shields, or a sliding glass window that puts a partial barrier between drivers and passengers, for a trial period beginning next week, the agency announced Tuesday at its Airways Transit Center.

Gary Rosenfeld, CEO of MATA said bus shields, having been in the transit industry for a while, are not a new concept. MATA is exploring installing them now after the recent request by a group of bus drivers.

Compared to other transit agencies across the country, Rosenfeld said “relatively speaking,” MATA has not seen a high number of incidents.

“We’re always concerned about passenger and employee safety aboard our buses,” Rosenfeld said. “That’s our number one priority at all times. We recognize that incidents do occur from time to time. There has been no real uptick in incidents, but, nonetheless, we recognize that there are incidents we need to take affirmative action to try and deal with them.”

The idea of the shield is to deter passengers from physically interfering with the bus operator. At roughly $5,000 a piece, Rosenfeld said the shields are a “tremendous capital investment,” but that MATA is “willing to invest in safety.”

“If we can be proactive in this situation, that’s great,” he said. “If it demonstrates that it prevents something bad from happening, even better. So it’s just a matter of working hand in hand with out bus drivers.”

For now just two of MATA’s buses will be equipped with shields during the demonstration period as MATA determines whether or not they are effective.

The demonstration period will continue “as long as it takes,” Rosenfeld said. This will give MATA time to collect data on the number and severity of incidents involving drivers when a shield is in place in order to make an “informed decision” on whether or not to add them to each of MATA’s approximate 120 fixed-route buses.

About six hours after University of Memphis football player Taylor Bradford was shot outside the Carpenter Complex on Poplar Ave. September 30th, approximately 4,500 students received a mysterious text message.

It didn’t say there had been a murder, just that classes would be canceled the following day and advised students to watch the news. It also listed a hotline number that students could call for more information.

“I woke up with my phone beeping at 4 a.m.,” says U of M student Chris Hayden. “They sent out another one later in the morning. I think it was effective because I would have had no other way of knowing classes were cancelled.”

But some students think the update from tigerText, the school’s subscription text-messaging alert system, was sent too late. The student government passed a resolution earlier this month condemning the university for failing to send information immediately after the shooting.

Students also have complained that due to spam filters used by certain cell phone service providers, some tigerText subscribers didn’t get the message at all.

“I understand their frustration,” says Derek Myers, University Police deputy director. “I think in the future, we’ll send out a breaking-news alert over the tigerText system just saying something like, ‘we’re investigating a shooting at Zach Curlin and Central.'”

Myers says the school has created an advisory committee for student input on how future situations should be handled. He says they’re also working on how to overcome spam filters.

“We’re working with the vendor, and they’re talking to various cell phone companies to make sure there’s no more problems with spam filters,” Myers says. “I got my message in five seconds, but others did not get the message at all.”

The day after the homicide, university officials passed out flyers urging students to sign up for tigerText at tigerText.memphis.edu. Since October 1st, more than 2,000 additional students have signed up for the service, bringing the total number of subscribers to almost 7,000.

Originally tigerText was intended for alerting students of class cancellations due to inclement weather, but the Bradford murder was the first situation in which the system was used.

“It seems that young people all have cell phones with them 24 hours a day, and they’re texting like crazy,” says Curt Guenther, U of M’s director of communications. “Colleges are realizing they need to change with the times. E-mail is almost passé.”

Besides evaluating the school’s alert system, Myers says the university is adding more security cameras and emergency phones following last month’s homicide.

“We’re actually down about 18 percent in our overall crime numbers, but the perception is that crime is up,” Myers says.

U of M student Matt Tubinis says he feels pretty safe on campus.

“The Carpenter Complex doesn’t really feel like it’s on-campus,” Tubinis says. “It’s not like somebody got shot by the fountain [in the middle of campus].”
