Havi of The Sidewayz Drops “Sinbad”

Havi, one-half of genre-defying hip-hop duo The Sidewayz, is gearing up to release his debut EP, Trü Grit.

Slated to drop late spring (May-ish), the project will feature his partner-in-crime Sal, along with Singa Bromfield of The Bromfield Trio.

Havi recently dropped the first vibe off the effort: “Sinbad.” It’s an energetic party cut laced by Michael Aldridge, who is responsible for most of the production on Trü Grit.

Havi keeps things simple on the song’s chorus but illustrates a crazy night on the town cleverly during his verse.

“I’m having a lot of fun with just keeping things simple and crunk with the beats my producers are giving me,” Havi said. “I think there’s less science behind my songs these days and more magic. I just go out into the Memphis night and get inspired by the raw energy that’s in these bars and underground clubs.”

Stream and download “Sinbad” below.

The Sidewayz Showcase Love for Video Games with “Chun Li” Visual

Screen_Shot_2014-09-16_at_11.45.28_AM.png

Memphis-bred lyricists Havi and Sal, collectively known as The Sidewayz, showcase their passion for vintage video games with the visual to their Street Fighter-influenced track “Chun Li.” The song comes from their 2013 EP, New World Boredom.

“It’s about being a little too attached to our game systems,” Havi said. “We’re big nerds for games. But the song was also inspired by our love triangles between us, our nerdom, and our girlfriends. Sometimes we’re into the game so hard we can’t pay attention. There’s also a metaphor about being in love with our musical careers buried in there as well.”

Peep the visual to “Chun Li,” the first-ever visual from The Sidewayz, below.

Worth Checking Out: Planet Kill Time by The Sidewayz

thesidewayz.jpg

Boundary-breaking group The Sidewayz has released the latest installment of their monthly EP series. On Planet: Kill Time, the duo takes a different approach than their January EP, Life Or Death, requiring fans to explore an imaginary world where a lonely, romantically distraught vampire resides. The EP examines what happens when he travels to planet earth and comes into contact with a mortal woman named Chelsea. His objective is to influence her to embrace the supernatural lifestyle and become his new love.

“It’s a bit more conceptual, grounded around the story of a vampire and his time with one girl,” said Havi, one-half of The Sidewayz. “The EPs really allow us to get pretty vivid for a few songs without entirely adapting to one set style of music. It’s pretty refreshing.”

Hip-Hop Group The Sidewayz Ditch Albums For EPs

thesidewayz2.jpg

Eclectic hip-hop group The Sidewayz have vowed to never release another album. Instead, the duo plans to deliver EPs on a monthly basis for fans to enjoy.

The decision is a result of the group embracing their independence as well as their eagerness to refrain from conforming to the typical guidelines followed by artists.

“We decided that dropping a whole LP is not something that independent artists really should be doing these days,” Havi said. “We live in a time where everybody and their mama has ADD [attention-deficit disorder]. Nobody has the time for a large album. [And] unless you’re like Jay-Z or something, you don’t have the time or the money to be putting out a big ass album once a year and hoping that everybody pays attention to it. They’re going to digest three or four songs on it, and then something else is going to come out and your shit is going to be old news.”

The idea appears to be unprecedented in the Bluff City hip-hop community, so the group may be viewed as trendsetters in the near future. If nothing else, delivering new music on a consistent basis will help The Sidewayz develop a larger fan base.

The latest installment of the group’s monthly EP series is Life Or Death, a five-track project composed of raw lyricism over solid production. On the The Dark Knight-influenced song “Dead City,” the duo drops verses about an imaginary town and the economical dilemmas and moral challenges faced by its residents. “Dead City” is a metaphor for Memphis.

“This city has got so much history, but at the moment, it’s a lot of dead history that you’ve got to go brush off in books and actually go read it in a museum or something, because we don’t keep it alive here,” Havi said. “From the pyramid, which is about to turn into a fucking Bass Pro Shop or something, to Elvis. Who talks about Elvis unless it’s like Elvis week? Stax Museum. Man, it’s got a lot of history here, especially for the arts, but we can’t talk about it, because it’s not a living, breathing city.”

Other songs on the EP include the Reggae-inspired “Rude Boys,” the heartfelt “Hood Paradiso,” and “The Key,” which the group uses to reflect on their musical journey up to the present. Each song on Live Or Die boasts its own message and sound, but all tracks exhibit a sense of passion and hope shared by two up-and-coming artists pursuing their calling.

Despite being a hip-hop group hailing from South Memphis, The Sidewayz sites artists like Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Kings of Leon, and The Killers as being musical inspirations when creating their projects. The duo use their unique influences to help distinguish themselves from other artists within the local hip-hop community. And they hope that their music motivates listeners to become more comfortable with embracing who they truly are.

“I just want people to do their own thing,” Sal said. “And with society, I feel like, people look down on you, if you don’t want to follow the path that’s been written for you. Nobody can do it the same no matter what it is. I just want to prove to people that you can be something, you can do something that’s different and make it with that, versus playing the safe route.”

The Sidewayz are prepping the release of their forthcoming EP Planet Kill Time, which will drop in February. They’re currently on an anti-venue “Face The Music” house party tour, and are preparing to launch their “Riding In Carz With Psychos” concert series.

“We’ve got enough friends with cool ass houses, so we’re going to rock some house parties and do some special guests DJing,” Havi said. “We just made this Facebook page called “Riding In Carz With Psychos” where we want to actually do concerts in people’s cars. We want people to sign up and try to organize where somebody picks us up and we rap in their cars, costumed-out on video, and we talk about music. They can take us somewhere if they want. If they don’t know where to take us, we know some cool fuckin’ places to go. And with Facebooking and Tweeting, we tell somebody else where we’re at and they come pick us up and we get in the car with them and do it again, all day leading up to this big ass house party where everybody will be [and we throw down].”

The Sidewayz desire to not only express themselves through music, but all forms of art. The group wants to collaborate with different producers, clothing designers, videographers and visual artists.

“We can’t get out all our ideas by just rapping and they can’t get out all their ideas with what they do,” Havi said. “This is not just hip-hop. This is social pop art.”

Straight Outta Southside: The Sidewayz is Breaking Barriers

Kross2Base.jpg

It’s not every day that you see a rap group coming out of South Memphis that’s influenced by rock artists such as The Killers, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. But when you do, you see The Sidewayz.

Composed of Havier “Havi” Green and Salazar “Sal” Diego, the childhood friends have been crafting tunes together since 2009. Thrived with the struggles that the average kid residing within a single parent, low-income household experiences, they’re life stories play a nice balance to the eclectic style they possess on the beat.

“Music has always been the best escape from our upbringing, which wasn’t that fuckin’ good,” says Havi. “It’s pretty bleak growing up in South Memphis. I’ve probably lived in every project in South and North Memphis; I’ve been homeless for a time. You kind of get used to it.…you’ve got to adjust to being where you’re at, but in the inside you know it’s something bigger out there.”

The Sidewayz has released two musical installments independently thus far: 2011’s Endless Summer, a 22-track mixtape in which the group spits clever verses over other artists’ instrumentals, and 2012’s Social Pop Art, a 12-track release that displays the duo’s growth over all original production.

Both mixtapes were well received in Memphis and enabled the duo to perform in front of crowds at such venues as the Hi-Tone, Brinson’s, Daily Planet, and the Buccaneer Lounge.

“The response, since we’ve followed our own artistic vision, it’s been pretty well. When people hear it, they automatically recognize it’s something different than what they’re used to,” says Havi. “We’re trying to bring change into something that’s been the same for a long time. We’re trying to grow and do something that’s actually going to break down a lot of barriers and let people know that you can still grow.”

Growth is what the group promises to continue to display with their upcoming mixtape, Art Appreciation. The Sidewayz assures it will be their best offering to date. Shortly after the mixtape release, the group plans to drop their debut album, Goodbye Gods, June 30th exclusively at the Memphis Rehearsal Complex on 296 Monroe Ave.

Art Appreciation is a continuation of our growth,” says Havi. “Social Pop Art really was our step to try and escape from the rawness of Endless Summer, and this one, we’re trying to blend both of them together.”

Dedicated to their craft, both members dropped out of college to pursue music full-time but their tales are a little different. While Sal attended Southwest Tennessee Community College in the city for a little while, Havi actually received a full scholarship to attend the prestigious and world-renown Vanderbilt University.

Taking a different lane than the average rap artists coming from South Memphis, or the city as a whole for that matter, isn’t something The Sidewayz is worried about. The group embraces their uniqueness with open arms and encourages others to try things outside of the norm.

“We never thought about doing what we do and people take it in a negative way,” says Sal. “Like, ‘damn, it sounds different. It’s not cool.’ It’s cool to be different. But you’re taking a chance with anything. The creativity of being an artist is taking chances, because you’re expressing yourself through your art. We know, yeah, we’re from South Memphis and when you listen to most of the music from the area that we come from, you know what to expect. With us, it’s totally different and we take a lot of pride in being an outcast.”
