Memphis will get nearly $4 million in grant money to help clear the city’s backlog of untested rape kits.
The city applied for an won a $1.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI).
The city also got a $1.9 million grant from the New York County District Attorney’s (NYDA) office, which has created a $38 million fund to fight the nationwide backlog.
“We know that these rape kits can help catch perpetrators and prevent additional attacks, so we should do everything we can to cut through this backlog and give victims the justice they deserve,” Memphis Congressman Steve Cohen said in a statement.
