The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, January 6-12

As The Flow prepares to go live, President Joe Biden is addressing the nation in real time, observing the one-year anniversary of a mob’s attack on the democratic process. This moment, and the events of one year ago that most of watched in real time, reveal the power and urgency of live-streaming.

In a way, that’s true of all live-streamed events. You can feel galvanized by the knowledge that what you are seeing is happening at that very moment, though you are far away. That feeling is especially powerful in the performing arts. Even the most apolitical, good-time music captures, in some way, our times. In this pandemic age, that’s more true than ever. Those who elect to support live music from their homes are recognizing both the danger and the promise of our times. If you’re staying home, pat yourself on the back and know that you can nonetheless help music flourish. Tune in, give the players a tip, and enjoy the show.

With over 2,000 new coronavirus cases reported in a single day this week, Shelby County would seem to be experiencing a surge. So we at The Flow are delighted to report that there are some venues and artists carrying on in that old 2020 style. Does that count as “old school” now? By any name, live-streaming may be the healthiest option for your New Year’s Eve celebrations. And if you do have a safe pod to hunker down with, why not gather around the old modern hearth, aka the screen of your choice, and give these artists a listen. Virtually drop an extra tip their way for good luck, along with your black eyed peas.

Things are understandably slow in the live-stream world, what with Christmas breaks and the general loss of urgency felt by the general public about social distancing. Some still carry the torch for extreme prudence, and if you’re one of them, there are several treats in store. No telling what Amy LaVere and Will Sexton have cooking for this Thursday’s revue, which will include many friends and secret Santas. There’s always the indefatigable Evil Rain, who call B-Side Memphis home, and the week is capped off there with a rare show by one of Memphis’ most inventive bands, Graber Grass. Look for all the bands’ virtual tip jars, and get into giving this Christmas!

In the Bluff City, the holidays are in full swing and available for the world to watch, thanks to the miracle of the internet. Some of the Christmas shows scheduled for online availability include The Sheiks’ annual Christmas in Space extravaganza, as well as a multi-band revue benefiting Porter-Leath’s work for children and families (Friday) and Mick Kolassa singing Uncle Mick’s Christmas Album (Sunday), both at Hernando’s Hide-a-way. But there are plenty of non-holiday tunes available too. Take your pick, and do your part to keep music safe throughout this pandemic.

The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, December 9-15

The standard show for live-streamed events and events in real life consists of a band and an opening act, but some of our live-streaming venues are focusing on revue-style entertainment.

That’s the case this Thursday at Hernando’s Hide-A-Way, with a singer/songwriter showcase hosted by Tiffany Harmon, and next Sunday with the Jazz Jam at B-Side Memphis. For the latter, B-Side Memphis writes: “We encourage instrumentalists to participate in a free flow session to develop new material and play together … just bring your instrument and the standards you would like to play in order to participate in this exciting collaboration!” And then there’s the Holiday Showcase, earlier in the day at the same venue. All of them are sure-fire ways to get some unpredictable sounds into your home, safely and securely. Stay safe, and enjoy the music!

B-Side Memphis boasts the ever-creative Velvetina Taylor’s Snow Moon Revue; and of course Hernando’s Hide-a-way features Drag Queen Bingo, with the one and only Imagene Azengraber. Singer/songwriters are particularly well-suited to live-streaming, and certainly many of our most reliable online performers have been solo artists of that genre who take advantage of the intimacy afforded by streaming devices. This week sees a proliferation of singer/songwriters, with an assortment of such artists at B-Side Memphis on Sunday, and a two nights of appearances by Arlo McKinley, the last artist that John Prine signed to his Oh Boy Records before his death. Of course, there are local standby entertainers as well, from Will Sexton to Richard Wilson, all hoping to transport you with the simplest of ingredients.
