The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, April 1-7

As spring enters its full bloom, the live-streamed shows carry on. And leading on that front is the band Devil Train, whose pre-COVID in-house residency at B-Side Bar quickly translated into weekly virtual concerts from the band for most of last year. They’ve been back at it for a few weeks now, with no sign of slowing. Don’t sleep on their jams, and, as always, tip generously.

REMINDER: The Memphis Flyer supports social distancing in these uncertain times. Please live-stream responsibly. We remind all players that even a small gathering could recklessly spread the coronavirus and endanger others. If you must gather as a band, please keep all players six feet apart, preferably outside, and remind viewers to do the same.

The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, March 11-17

As the weather becomes idyllic, and vaccines more common, there’s been a dip in live-streamed events. Venues with outdoor stages have been busier than ever of late, and some, like Murphy’s, are setting up their outdoor stages just for dear old St. Patrick’s Day. And yet some artists and venues prefer to err on the side of caution, and there are unique gems available for streaming on your device of choice as well. Cameron Bethany makes a rare appearance, as does the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, no less. Please tune in to their virtual concerts and, as always, tip generously.

The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, March 4-10

Though outdoor shows are blooming with spring, live-streams are also enjoying an uptick. Case in point: Devil Train is now back on track with their regular Thursday-night, online residency at B-Side Bar. The same venue is also hosting two other shows this weekend, including Friday’s record release party for the latest by Late Bloom, a Michael Graber project. Meanwhile, the usual suspects carry on the noble tradition of virtual residencies from all manner of locations throughout the city, refusing to jump the gun when it comes to audience and performer safety. Check them all out and be sure to tip generously.

The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, February 25-March 3

This week sports a flurry of fresh online performances, starting this afternoon with the continuation of Folk Unplugged, the annual conference/festival for Folk Alliance International. Local purveyors of the genre Folk All Y’all also bring singer/songwriter David Wilcox.

On the “countrypolitan” side of things, Dale Watson brings his new album, The Memphians, to life online and live at limited capacity at the World Famous Hernando’s Hide-a-way.

And then there’s a rare performance by Southern Avenue from “Studio A” in the former home of Stax Records, now the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. This will be a homecoming of sorts for Southern Avenue keyboard player Jeremy Powell, an alum of the Stax Music Academy.

With Folk Unlocked, the Folk Alliance Goes Virtual in a Big Way

For some Memphis players and their fans, this week brings an event that is the highlight of the year, or even a major step up in their career: the annual conference hosted by Folk Alliance International (FAI). Based in Memphis for a time, the event is much-beloved by many local artists. And this year, the physical location of the conference is a moot point:  it’s all online, and it’s all this week. The Folk Unlocked event promises to “unlock the doors and windows of the house of folk to be as broad and inclusive as possible, inviting those who have been loyally attending Folk Alliance International conferences for years while aiming to reach folk musicians and professionals who have never benefited from or attended FAI before.”

As always, this will involve a meeting of minds and musicians on many levels, including panels, workshops, affinity and peer group meetings, exhibit spaces, networking, and mentorship for many, not to mention the showcases of almost performers (see the full lineup here). Once registered for a minimal donation, attendees can view performances and other videos as they are premiered, or browse through the archives later. And for those who can’t commit to dropping a bit of coin for the cause, keep in mind that the FAI is indeed fighting the good fight, having been recently recognized by Rolling Stone as one of the “organizations that have been doing some of the most crucial relief work during the pandemic.”

Indeed, the Folk Unlocked virtual festival marks the launch of the Village Fund, FAI’s grants program for struggling musicians and folk music workers during the COVID crisis. And, as a result of moving online due to the pandemic, the organization is providing unlimited public access to the music showcases for the first time in its history.

With over 800 hours of music (listen to a Spotify playlist of the artists here), from all fifty US states and over thirty additional countries, this is not an opportunity to be missed. And the schedule for the festival, which runs all this week through Friday, promises many highlights, including:

  • Los Lobos
  • Winner of NBC’s The Voice and singer-songwriter Sawyer Fredericks
  • Grammy-winner Keb Mo
  • Songwriting icon Jim Lauderdale
  • All-female mariachi band and Latin Grammy winners Flor de Toloache
  • Americana Music Award Emerging Artist winners, the Nashville soul duo The War and Treaty
  • North Carolina gospel family group Dedicated Men of Zion, fresh from their appearance on NPR Music x globalFEST.
  • Canadian First Nations artist William Prince, who plays music from his ancestors in the gospel tradition.
  • Brazilian artist Jacqueline Marissol Mwaba, who fuses a diversity of musical influences with the African cultural panorama, mainly with the music of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (original country of her parents).
  • Experimental and electronic music from Aguascalientes-born artist ANAN, Natalia Gómez (composer, vocalist, instrumentalist) and Rafael Durand Kick (producer, arranger).

Erica Winchester

The Tennessee Screamers

It’s clearly a global celebration, and could make for some new epiphanies concerning what folk music is and can be. But for Memphians, the festival’s also very local. These local artists will be representing the Bluff City at the festival:

  • Terrence and Marcella Simien feat. Making Movies
  • Cedric Burnside feat. Making Movies
  • Deborah Gleese Barnes and The Sensational Barnes Brothers
  • Victoria Dowdy
  • The Wealthy West
  • The Tennessee Screamers
  • Chris Hamlett
  • New Memphis Colorways
  • Jeremy Stanfill
  • Chinese Connection Dub Embassy
  • Doug MacLeod
  • Bill Stanek
  • Alice Hasen
  • Will Sexton
  • Elizabeth King
  • Jack Ward

See the schedule for their time slots, then head over to Folk Unlocked to donate and register, making all the videos as they become available throughout the week.
In the meantime, here’s a bit more about Folk Alliance International, made on the occasion of its 30th Anniversary in 2018.

The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, February 11-17

Valentine’s Day may be a quiet affair for most folks this weekend, but that doesn’t mean that music can’t be part of the equation. A few events are scheduled for the great day itself, while others warm up the earlier part of the weekend with pre-holiday events. Try out these players’ offerings, and be sure to tip them generously.

Stax Music Academy Students Bring Rhythm & Revolution Online

The Stax Music Academy (SMA) is buzzing with activity these days, as students and instructors work in its studios, and fan out across the city, for a little R&R.

No, they’re not taking a vacation, and this is not for rock ‘n’ rollers only. Rather, the entire academy has shifted into high gear for its upcoming online presentation, “R & R: Rhythm and Revolution: Expressions of Struggle, Collaboration, and Peace.”

This virtual show replaces the two live performances typically held by the academy in celebration of Black History Month. Though most musical fans will be asked to pay a donation, the program will be made available at no cost to students, schools, and youth organizations across the world.

And the SMA is taking that last part seriously, offering a study guide so educators can present the show to students in a considered way. The guide includes a set of questions that can be used to help young people process some of the thoughts and feelings that may arise on topics the concert will address. And, for the first time ever, the SMA study guide also includes a songwriting competition for students in grades 4-12, with a cash prize for the winner.

Aiming to be an “upbeat production designed especially for students who are currently lacking access to the arts during the COVID pandemic,” the online show will feature renditions of soul classics and original music by SMA’s students. Music of the Civil Rights Movement and more recent anthems will be highlighted, along with songs made famous by the likes of Aretha Franklin, the Staple Singers, Al Green, The Jackson 5, Janet Jackson and Albert King.

The virtual Black History Month show is even now being filmed in various locations in Memphis, including the I AM A MAN Plaza at historic Clayborn Temple, Beale Street, the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, and Royal Studios, home of Hi Records, and artists like Al Green and Ann Peebles.

Pat Mitchell-Worley

“As important as the Black History Month lessons are in this virtual production, it is more than anything a show of sheer entertainment for students of all ages and parents alike,” said Stax Music Academy executive director Pat Mitchell Worley. “Our students are performing for other students and have been involved in every aspect of the show, from designing costumes to engineering and production to even filming dance lessons for other young people to emulate and enjoy.”

“R & R: Rhythm and Revolution: Expressions of Struggle, Collaboration, and Peace,”  available on the Stax Music Academy’s website starting February 17, 2021. Register as an “Educator” in the EventBrite Link for access to study guides.

The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, February 4-10

We’re seeing a rise in online events again this week, and why not? When a club hosts a live show with a limited capacity audience, it only makes sense to clue others in on what’s going down in its venue. And so music marches on. One notably unique live-stream this week will be a fundraiser for local band So Gung Ho, who seek contributions for their debut album. Check them all out, and stay safe!

The Flow: Live-Streamed Music Events This Week, January 14-20

The week brings many unique delights, in addition to the stalwarts who have helped us through these many months of quarantine. Amy LaVere and Will Sexton present a live-streamed show from St. Croix, where they’ve landed after a very conscientious flight. South Main Sounds offers up another installment in its occasional series, this time featuring Scott Southworth and Mark Lavey. And finally, the great Memphis native Charles Lloyd offers up a virtual concert from UCLA that promises to be stellar.
